Lone Survivor star Mark Wahlberg: Prohibited from touching guns?

January 30, 2014

Mark Wahlberg, star of the current hit movie Lone Survivor, has a checkered past.

In fact, as a 16-year-old, Walberg pled guilty in 1988 to two counts of criminal contempt after beating a Vietnamese man badly enough that the victim of the attack lost an eye and was sentenced to two years in prison. The original charge was attempted murder.

At approximately 9:00 p.m. on April 8, 1988 Thanh Lam, a Vietnamese adult male who resides in Dorchester, traveled by car to 998 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, Massachusetts. At 998 Dorchester Avenue, Thanh Lam left his car carrying two cases of beer. As he crossed the sidewalk, Mark Wahlberg attacked Thanh Lam. Wahlberg was carrying a large wooden stick, approximately five feet long and two to three inches in diameter. Wahlberg approached Thanh Lam calling him a “Vietnam f,” then hit him over the head with the stick. Thanh Lam was knocked to the ground unconscious. The stick broke in two and was later recovered from the scene. Thanh Lam was treated overnight at Boston City Hospital.

After police arrested Wahlberg later on the night of April 8, 1988, Wahlberg was informed of his rights and returned to the scene of 998 Dorchester Avenue. In the presence of two police officers, he stated: “You don’t have to let him identify me, I’ll tell you now that’s the mother- who’s head I split open,” or words to that effect.

As a police officer arrived at the scene of 998 Dorchester Avenue, Wahlberg and two other youths who were with him fled up Dorchester Avenue toward Pearl Street.

“Does that include their armed guards turning their guns in?”

Rand Calls Gun-Hating Celebs’ Use Of Armed Security ‘Hypocrisy’

March 29, 2013 by Ben Bullard

Famous people who back gun control are being hypocritical when they retain the services of security guards who carry handguns and other firearms, said Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) last week.

Speaking on the “Hannity” show on FOX News, Paul said gun control devotees like New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as well as famous Hollywood types, are right to hire security to protect their famous selves from personal harm; they’re just wrong to oppose the rights of other Americans to own firearms so they can accomplish the same thing.

I don’t begrudge any famous person like Mayor Bloomberg, or the President or the President’s family for having protection — I think they all should; there’s enough crazy people out there who would attack on the right or the left. But I think when you are being protected by people who have weapons, or responsible people, I can’t see why you would be opposed to that for other people.

So yes, many rich Hollywood celebrities have armed guards with them at all times and many regular people who live in a poor neighborhood, who have a business in a poor neighborhood and a neighborhood that may have higher crime — those people have to suffer the vicissitudes of violent crime without protection sometimes, because of gun control laws. So, yes, I think there is a certain amount of hypocrisy.

Paul and other colleagues in the Senate have pledged to filibuster gun-control legislation ahead of an expected vote next month.

The tough neighborhoods of MA and other states are gang infested and a lot of kids get caught up in that activity. Fortunately Mark Whalberg found a path out of it and many many years later lives a law abiding life. What is the guy 40 years old? He has atoned for over 20 years by living a good life.

A large family isn’t a risk factor by itself for criminal behavior. Neither did poverty used to be.

Now if you tell me he grew up in a violent home where his parents drank and fought and his older brothers initiated him into gangs and his sisters were raising illegitimate babies and their boyfriends were molesting Mark - then, maybe, it’s something of a miracle he straightened out.

But he doesn’t sound remorseful or very accepting of responsibility in the attack on the Vietnamese man - where he must have done more than whack the man over the head with a stick to make him lose his eye - basically “I was a young thug, I was someone else then, it’s in my past, I’m over it.” How nice for him.

he was the youngest of 9 kids and raised in poverty. Frankly its a miracle he managed to overcome it and live a normal law abiding life today.

There are millions who come from poor backgrounds and don't turn into criminals. There ain't no miracles involved.

That is because they don't get out of high school until they are nearing 30. [Many who portray high schoolers are much older.] Ahhhhh, the wonders of Hollywood.

"...after beating a Vietnamese man badly enough that the victim of the attack lost an eye and was sentenced to two years in prison."

Is this to say the Vietnamese man lost an eye and was sentenced to two years in prison? Or is it supposed to mean Wahlberg was sentenced to two years in prison after beating a Vietnamese man so badly he lost an eye?

“Here are portions of selected Massachusetts court documents detailing Wahlberg’s former intolerance for, among others, “slant-eyed gooks” and black children. These attacks resulted in a jail stint for Wahlberg.”

Marky Mark,

Just another reason I won’t watch 99% of the movies made today.

Good Lord, I hate hearing the living in poverty crap. I was the last of 9 and we lived in abject povert. First six years of my life we lived in a house with no plumbing. No toilet, no sinks, no tubs. I took a bath once a week after my sister and brother used the water in the metal tub. Where did the water come from? From the farm a mile down the road where two of my brothers would go - every day - with a milk can - and get water from their pump.

What happened with me? I did 18 years in the U.S. Navy, was never arrested, got a college degree, and now work in a great job. Happily married.

Please don't use living in poverty as an excuse for anyone.

Right...I get it. I was making a point about the horrible writing. Hopefully it wasn't you who wrote the article, and if so, sorry about being so blunt.

My comment was concerning poverty, and poverty doesn’t create bad neighborhoods, entitlement programs do.

There is plenty of 'good ole boy', 'young wild male' stuff that is criminal, but which to me are wildness that doesn't show a bad heart, this isn't one of them.

He really is lacking something inside.

Yes, I agree.

As a side note, I was a little hesitant to post this thread that could take away from the film ‘Lone Survivor’ and did not want to have anyone refuse to see the film just because the main character is just another Hollywierdo. But, I know that most everyone gets it that Marky Mark was not a great choice to portray Marcus Lutrell.

I enjoyed the film ‘Act of Valor’ because the film makers used actual Navy Seals in the film.

I wouldn’t go so far as to brand Wahlberg for life for his youthful brutality, guys easily outgrow (doing) that stuff, but it does indicate that he has a lacking that we may see revealed from time to time, but I think most actors don’t have the deep character that we admire.

Mark is probably well within the range of normal failings though, of Hollywood imperfections.

I have hoped for some time that he would try to keep a lid on his political stuff so that we can have an action actor that is acceptable, if he is smart he will stay away from the stupid mistakes and self indulgence of for instance, Matt Damon.
I kind of like Mark Wahlberg and hope he stays focused on acting and staying good with the public who like his movies, he is a church goer, which is a strong sign that at least he has some depth and independence that most of them don’t have.

What’s the average age of special forces members and Navy Seals?

If you are not a liberal at 20 you have no heart.
If you are not a conservative by 40 you have no
brains......Winston Churchhill.

This phenomeon may apply to Mark Wahlberg.
As he matured he became rational, meaning he
became conservative.
