The 5 Worst Christmas Songs of All Time
Ricochet.com ^ | 12/18/13

With a week to go before the big day, I’ve need to get something off my chest: If I hear Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” again I’m going to convert to Norse paganism, grab a battle-ax and lay waste to the local all-holiday radio station.

The choir of children sing their song! Ding dong! Ding dong! Ding dong! ding Ahhhhhhh… "SECURITY! A Viking just killed the board op! Save us from the wrath of the Northmen!"

The ex-Beatle abomination is number one on my list and I can’t even bear to embed the video. But there are other horrifying songs that litter airwaves, malls and waiting rooms in an effort to ruin this time of year.

2. Band Aid "Do They Know Its Christmas"

A common question among early 80s New Romantics was “What do Bob Geldof and Midge Ure think about the birth of Christ?” Unfortunately they answered with a British “all-star” carol featuring heartwarming lines such as:

And the Christmas bells that ring there Are the clanging chimes of doom Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

Just try to enjoy those presents now, you Thatcherite fascists!

3. Bruce Springsteen "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" Springsteen is popular in New Jersey because he always sings about escaping New Jersey. Santa didn’t get the hint and is flying into Newark unless Bruce can ward him off with his gravelly voice and faux stage banter. This song mostly makes the list because I’ve heard it every day of Advent since I discovered radio. Enough.

4. Wham! "Last Christmas" face on a lover with a fire in his heart A man under cover but you tore him apart

George Michael isn’t singing about Santa or the baby Jesus in this one. But occasionally you can hear it hummed in public bathrooms coast to coast.

5. John Lennon "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" In a world of bad ideas, “Hey, let’s ask the atheist to write a Christmas song!” might have the worst results. As the video shows, the proper spelling is “Xmas” and the season needs less decking the halls and more dying children in far-off places. Ex-Beatles and Christmas don't mix.

So those are my picks. What do you think are the worst Christmas songs of all time?

I am more of a traditionalist. I care for very few, if ANY, of the pop or modern Christmas songs. When Rush plays Silent Night on his last program before Christmas, it brings me to tears.
Traditional winter songs, especially “Sleigh Ride”, are also in my list of favorites.

I like listening to Polish Christmas Carols. I’m sure when you were in Slovakia, they had similar kinds of Carols.

To be fair, calling Paul McCartney an accomplished musician is an understatement. But he’s still a political moron. And there’s just something disingenuous about a pot smoking vegan. Eating any animal or dairy products is unhealthy, but inhaling fumes that are at least as dangerous as cigarette smoke is OK? I don’t get it.

"The Little Drummer Boy".

I can't stand it. I don't care if it's Gene Krupa himself drumming away on the recording.

This song's monotony and repetition drives me to turn to the "Twelve Days of Christmas"....oh, wait, that's almost as bad.....bah humbug!

Even if he's dueting with Buddy Rich.

Be better if it were Iggy and the Stooges.

Thank you. Someone out there actually agrees with me.

I hate the little drummer boy with a passion, especially the Harry Simeone Chorale version.

Also Silent Night All Day Long.

Somehow I missed that one. Thanks for the suggestion, what a beautiful song!

Paul is one of the greatest musical geniuses of our time, evidenced once again by his current album “New”, but when he speaks of politics, he sounds like any guy about to fall off his barstool. Virtually every artistic person has a political common sense IQ of an imbecile. Bob

If the Stones ever did a Christmas song, it might end up like this:

The Midnight Oil song is awesome. So is Happy Christmas by Lennon, even though it has goofy lyrics. Melodically, I could not get the song out of my head when it was new on green vinyl. Bob

I have an adorable niece that just loves

to play “Last Christmas”,except Taylor Swift

sings her version of it..not bad.

I`ve never gotten tired of hearing GGROBAR,a

few times each Christmas.

Many years ago our paper wrote about the

lady who wrote it...from Crossville ,Tn I think.

Yes, but I had no radio, so I heard Christmas music only if it was on the street or in one of the huge ornate churches.
At least I was not exposed to “I Saw Santa Kissing..whatever”.

I think (and I hope someone will correct me if I’m wrong, because I’m way too lazy to google this) the song came out right after the end of the Vietnam War, or as we on the Right say after the fall of Saigon. You’ll notice they say (sing) “war IS over”, emphasis mine. So, I count it as pretty lefty. Not like “Imagine”, a song which I’ve always abhorred and the continued popularity of which makes me think that almost nobody listens to the lyrics (in fact, I’m convinced for many reasons that this is true).

But I do like “and so this is Christmas”, it’s reflective and slightly melancholy but ends up joyful (even if I can’t agree with the underlying facts as I recall them), it’s very much how I feel each Christmas time.

I was never the world’s biggest Lennon (or Beatles) fan, but I like to think if Lennon hadn’t been disgustingly murdered he might have come over to our side a bit more. I still remember that his and Yoko’s foundation (whatever it was called, I can’t remember) gave money for bullet proof vests for NYC cops, even though they got grief over it from their fellow lefties. (Again, correct me Freepers if I’m wrong in my recollection!)

Christmas Best to you and yours and may all your listening be rocking!

Anyone want to hear a FABULOUS Christmas song which features a super hottie in its video? Watch the Florin St. Band song on youtube. Sadly, it’s not religious, but it’s beautiful. As well, the entire Gentle Night album from the St. Louis Jesuits, which does honor Jesus’ birth, of course. Bob

“The Midnight Oil song is awesome”

Totally, it is! So glad you agree!

I really like the Lennon song too, not least because it IS “Happy Christmas” which is so English and charming.
