A. Barton Hinkle, a Richmond Times-Dispatch columnist and Reason magazine contributor, wrote a fascinating and chilling column this week about the Food and Drug Administration expensive and burdensome new menu labeling scheme.
The regulations will dictate the disclosure of calorie counts for foods sold in restaurants, grocery stores, delis, bakeries, coffee shops, and even gas stations, according to Hinkle. And those businesses will pay a hefty price to comply with the policy. The federal government figures the rules will cost more than $1 billion and require more than 14.5 million hours of labor to meet.
The calorie posting regulations, which are expected to go into effect any day, have been debated for three years. Why? Because its confusing as hell to try to figure out how to force business owners to post the calorie count for custom made food orders.

Nanny State PING!
My wife’s cousin has a small restaurant in Portland, OR that specializes in Northern Thai food and noodle soups. I cannot begin to imagine how they could comply with these regulations. The first question they ask a customer is “How do you like ______ ? Hot or mild, what ingredients do you like in the soup?” Most customers are knowledgable and have their favorite variations.
This is as infuriating as it is absurd.
This getting to be more like Dominatrix State, isn't it?
Citizen...You now live in the USSA. Love it or leave it...while you can.
Is it designed to reduce obesity?
As if ANYONE thinks that a Domino's pizza is going to be "healthy".
"You know, I've been thinking about ordering a meat lover's pizza. How many calories if I eat 4 pieces? Oh, that's just too many. Better cancel the order."
Said no one ever.
I thought it said politeness regulations and that will not surprise me.
Get ready for more of this crap until we stop it. It is going to take more than words. People are going to have to get fed up with it and make a unified stand against injustice and capricious dictatorship.
We first have a regime take over at least one automobile company and order another to eliminate dealerships; strong arm banks into doing business as the regime ordered and enforce "rules and regulations" never discussed nor hearings held to see what, if any effects they had on businesses; proclaim "deemed to have passed" a "healthcare" overhaul that was really a piece of paper with nothing written on it, only to come back with a nearly 3,000 page "bill," later adding over 38,000 "new regulations" that we still, at this late date, have no idea how they apply to individuals who have been ordered to pay with jail and hefty fines by the IRS (who now have their own private army with deadly weapons, should people "resist") and worst of all, this mandate to purchase the "insurance" that will cover killing of unborn babies, abortion inducing drugs under the guise of "birth control," refuse to treat or care for individuals of a certain age with certain health problems and soon to happen rationing of care. Right now some doctors are being denied payment for treating people, soon they will be "ordered to treat or deny care" by the regime, under penalty of fine and/or jail!
The aforementioned hardly qualifies as a mere "Nanny State."
Stalin, Chairman Mao and Pol Pot would love to have had this many "subjects with which to rule!
Obama administration has no authority to do all of this. Everyone should just tell them to go to hell and ignore all of the crap. Why is everyone just rolling over like they are dead?
Time has come or even long since passed for big hunks of "Civil Disobedience!"
The biggest outrage is this decree is coming from an organization no one voted for and whom we have absolutely no control over.
At least it’ll be interesting to see the useful idiots try and continue justifying the ABC agencies as their jobs are sucked dry by idiotic regulations.
Here is where mass civil disobedience starts. The only persons who favor this sit in FDA cubicles in downtown DC.
Everyone has their own calorie meter. It exists in their stomach. Efforts should be taken to fool that tummy meter.
...”Nanny State PING!”...
You know, I wish we could change the term to describe communism and worse from “The Nanny” state, to some term which truly reflects what is going on, because, a Nanny is a kind, and loving caretaker of little children. What is happening to America through just the regulatory process should be called the “Facist Grab for Power and Wealth Pogram.”
You can forget about the daily special. It’s a thing of the past.
Nazis of any variety are still Nazis. Natural law presides here.
Gee, just like Obamacare.
Thanks for the ping!
The Congress could end this, and other such nonsense by zeroing the budgets of these tyrannical agencies. As an added bonus, we’d save billions doing it!
