The Blind Men and the President

The Blind Men and the President

With scant apologies to John Godfrey Saxe, whose poem is a theological atrocity.

Six voters of Ameristan,

To morals not inclined,

All cast a vote for President

(Though all of them were blind)

To serve as confirmation

that they had an open mind.

The First in vaunted academe

who, happening to hear

a telepromptered eloquence,

did shed a happy tear:

“For once we have a President

as smart as we are here!”

The Second in a nightclub

an obscenely fevered fray,

Shouted that a magazine

Announced it clear as day.

"Newsweek's out! There is no doubt!

The President is gay!”

The Third said in his mountain cave,

"Great Satan understands!

That Copts and Druze, that hated Jews

are dogs upon our lands.

But they'll be done when once our son

puts weapons in our hands!"

The Fourth reached out a greedy palm,

and flashed his EBT.

“He gave me an Obamaphone

and crazy checks, you see.

Keep the man in President:

he gives us sh** for free!”

The Fifth, a Fabian socialist

who doubted Adam's sin,

bewailed her own base wickedness

for having lighter skin.

"We're racist prone! We must atone!

And vote for melanin!"

The Sixth, a craven Bankster,

smiled at what he'd heard

as the Fed was overflowing,

and the market Ponzi spurred.

"I'll suck up all the interest,

from the total debt incurred!"

So the peons of the POTUS

who expected founts of grace,

got Doric posts of styrofoam,

and icons of his face.

And told those off who dared to scoff:

"You hate him for his race."

Oft as lofty nations fall,

the bickering conceals

ravens picking clean a carcass

at the cost of future meals

prating on about a President

who shares all their ideals!

Well done! I can’t rhyme to save my life, but I can recognize an iambic pentameter!

Brilliant! But somewhere, Kipling is now crying because he did not write this.

(And I completely agree with you about Saxe.)

Thanks for starting off Friday on such a good note.

I can see you are a man who loves words. Great job.

I've posted over 500 poems on FR during my 15 years here, mostly all political satire....and I recognize talent when I read it. Hope to hear more from you poetically in the future!

You are too kind Leni. Post some of your work here, or a link!

I started writing poetry in earnest 20 years ago but largely abandoned it because there seemed to be so little interest. Seems you had the right idea all along though: people who wouldn’t normally be interested in poetry per se still love a good piece of satire.
