Food stamps glitch is a glimpse into pandemonium to come
DC Clothesline ^ | 10/16/2013 | Dr. Eowyn

Posted on 10/16/2013 7:25:22 AM PDT by IbJensen

Under the POS’s presidency, the number of Americans receiving food stamps (now called Electronic Benefits Transfer or EBT) exploded.

Today, one in five U.S. households are on food stamps. Worse still, we are taking two steps back for every step forward: For every new job that’s been created, two new recipients (let’s call them food-stampers) are added to the food stamps dole.

Given our exploding national debt and the impending bankruptcy of, first, Social Security Disability (in 2016!), then Social Security itself, followed by Medicare, anyone with half a brain whose head isn’t plunged deep in the River of Denial, knows that the morbidly obese Welfare State cannot be sustained.

Here’s a glimpse into the social pandemonium and mayhem when that day comes and the proverbial sh*t hits the fan.

Last Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, the EBT computer system went down in several states, including Louisiana. Reportedly, Xerox, a vendor for the EBT system, experienced a power outage while conducting a routine backup test in one of the company’s locations. While the system was back up Saturday night, it still was not functioning entirely properly in some areas.

Many stores turned away EBT shoppers, but not Wal-Mart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, Louisiana. Those stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though, since the EBT system was down, the cards were not showing limits. The store managers called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman said to let the food-stampers use the cards anyway.

In other words: FREE STUFF!

What happened was not pretty.

The food-stampers went into a buying frenzy, stripping the stores’ shelves by the end of the day.

October 14, 2013 Carolyn Roy reports for KSLA, Oct. 13, 2013, that food stamps recipients literally cleared the Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield. “Just about everything is gone, I’ve never seen it in that condition,” said Mansfield Walmart customer Anthony Fuller.

From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700.00 and only had 49 cents on her card. She was held by police until corporate Walmart said they wouldn’t press charges if she left the food.

The chaos ultimately required intervention from local police in Springhill and Mansfield who were brought in for crowd control. Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Walmart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Walmart was so packed, “It was worse than any black Friday” that he’s ever seen.

There were no arrests.

Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts filled to overflowing in the aisles and left.

Walmart employees could still be seen putting food from the carts away as late as Sunday afternoon. “I was just thinking, I’m so glad my mom doesn’t work here [Walmart] anymore, that’s the only thing I could think about, those employees working, that would have to restock all that stuff,” said O.J Evans who took cell phone video of the overflowing shopping carts at the Mansfield Walmart.

Walmart shoppers Stan and Judy Garcia said, ”That’s plain theft, that’s stealing that’s all I got to say about it.”

Kayla Whaling, a spokesperson for Walmart, tells KSLA News 12 that the company was “fully engaged and monitoring the situation and transactions during the outage. We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards (and purchases on WIC and SNAP) during the outage so that they could get food for their families.”

A spokesperson for the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (LA DSFS) says they take all allegations of potential fraud seriously, they are aware of the reports and they will be investigating. According to a notice posted on the LA DSFS website on Saturday:

“While transactional systems maintained by DCFS contractors may have been impacted by today’s outage, the systems that DCFS uses to track EBT card usage and identify fraud were still in place. DCFS vigorously investigates all fraud claims. Anyone suspected of fraudulently using public assistance benefits are investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The public is encouraged to report cases of suspected SNAP fraud by calling the DCFS toll-free hotline at 1-888-LAHELP-U and selecting option 7 from the main menu or by visiting:

www.dcfs.la.gov/ReportFraud.”

Pictorial proof that this country has deliberately created and nurtured a permanent dependent underclass.

As a consequence of this government intervention, the underclass is undisciplined, irresponsible, law-breaking and selfish.

And what’s worse, the underclass hates the responsible, hard-working people who go to work every day and watch 40% of their earnings siphoned off to go to the underclass.

When the SHTF the 47% will turn immediately rabid. Be ready to protect your families.

“bargaining chip” makes complete sense as well. That’s where they’ll start.

They could have brought in the riot police who were hanging around the war memorials in full gear (during a govt shutdown) with just nothing to do.

Excellent point.
Riot police all over the place "protecting" nothing because citizens wanted to enjoy their monuments (stop calling them federal "property!) while a flash mob robs and trashes a huge store, with no law enforcement presence in sight.

What's wrong with this picture?

How is it that this “glitch” came to be? The program has been in place for a long time. Why a problem now?

Creating a crisis so it can’t go to waste.

The corruption of those in charge and their collusion with those for whom the mob is beneficial. In this case Walmart execs.

Something’s not right here. EBT is basically “free” food for the card holder. Why make a big run when it’s “free” anyway?

Look carefully at photos inside those stores with the parasites present. Half of them are on obamaphones calling the rest of the vermin mob...

Free stuff is free stuff. They don't actually have to need it. They can use it to trade for drugs, guns, gold chains, whatever...

“Here’s a glimpse into the social pandemonium and mayhem when that day comes and the proverbial sh*t hits the fan.”

I can’t buy into this, all the government has to do is print more money. There will never be a shortage of digits you can type into an electronic account.
The EBT cards will always be funded first, ahead of social security checks or medicare funding.

Rumor has it that EBT cards will not be funded/recharged on Nov 1st.

One can only wish...

All citizens are equal, except the elected criminals, their enforcement arm of endless bureaucrats, and the parasite class.

How long can that last?

You are nearly echoing what I said when I first heard about this. Could they really not anticipate what would happen? Those people were nowhere near starvation and were more than capable of doing without taxpayer funded freebies for a few more hours.

I thought Walmart would have learned their lesson when, a few years back, those people got crushed against the glass doors trying to get in to a sales event. Mob mentality is not rational and, in the moral wasteland our society is becoming, mobs can form just about anywhere people think they can gain personal advantage.

If the people at Walmart can’t manage a situation like this with care, then they need to find better managers who can.

Only until the instant they need their blood more than they need their votes.

How many votes does a dictator for life need again?

Exactly. Most people can’t store a lot of food in their living space. These people weren’t stealing food to store it. 20% of American homes are receiving food stamps. Why? I understand that a large percentage of our population are thieves who will do most anything for money, but shouldn’t there be checks on these kinds of people? The Democrats do a lot of yammering about helping the poor, but it’s just a front for buying votes from the middle class. I just looked, and you can lease a Mercedes for less than $350 a month. If your household gets $350 a month in food stamps, that frees up $350 to lease a Mercedes. It’s not welfare, it’s good old-fashioned Democrat vote buying. The Democrats are giving their voters new cars. Time to audit food stamps.

How many stores had this experience? It seems all the reporting is on these two Louisiana locations. If so, what did the other stores do to prevent this (a la Aldies “no EBT cards accepted”)?

Seems like Wal-Mart screwed the pooch on this one.

Haven’t read the article yet. Here’s my 2 cents -

People think it a ‘glitch’, some say it a ‘dry run’.

Has anybody thought about in the near future Obama using it as a threat/weapon?

Anytime he’s displeased with the sheeple, he’s releasing the zombie horde, he’s in effect our dictator (all but in the name).

This is the execs responsibility. The amount of money that was stolen from the EBT system (govt revenue funded) is above a manager’s pay grade

I had a friend who’s mother was, in her ‘60s or so, manic depressive. The mother, formerly very fabulous and still very wealthy, went out, off her meds, and spent thousands on a pile of shoes. It was a NY suburban villeinage. The shipowner knew this family, as he did all of us

My friend, college age at the time, went in to the store with all the shoes and returned them. She had a pithy lecture for, not the cashier, the manager. He had a lot of bleep nerve selling this amount of stuff to an obviously sick woman, taking advantage of her

Same deal here

No respect for others’ money. Especially govt money.
