How Safe is Blog Pimping? Not. At. All. Safe.

Ripping off another site on your blog is uncool. Posting it on FR as an excerpt to drive hits to your blog is even more uncool. Having it be a copyright-restricted source is really, really, really uncool. Throw in the fact that you are a retread blog pimp and the en banc Kitteh appeals court has reached a unanimous verdict.

Your constant picking has been nothing but a distraction and a bullying and it has stopped many people.

If so, and it has stopped them using Free Republic as nothing more than a source of free advertising.. then I am well pleased.

I will tell you how bloggers benefit FR. It gives us more links, and most of all it gives us more content and connection to other Conservative thinkers.

Why couldn't this content be posted right here on Free Republic?
Because the blogpimp wants to direct traffic to his blog, that's why.
Because the blogpimp thinks that he should be paid for his posts
here, even if he ripped them off somewhere else. You like apples?

My own site was featured here years ago. I was proud of it and it got me noticed and continued the conservative conversation.

Really. What "site" was that?

Did you have advertising and a hit counter?

Fact is there isn't any reason for self-published bloggers or
most other types not to post their (stolen, re-worded) material
right here on Free Republic. Unless they are scamming hits.

How about them apples?

What makes me mad is all those guys at the NY Times who are ripping off content Satan copyrighted. I don't sense a good end to that.

Isn't the blogpimp just acting as a parasite?

Isn't a parasite always detrimental to its host organism? Are blogpimps detrimental to FR? Annoying, sure, but harmful?

Don’t all articles come from somewhere? Doesn’t language eminate from some other place. You didn’t write that article! Somebody else made that happen!

"I say so. Your constant picking has been nothing but a distraction and a bullying and it has stopped many people. I have talked to them on and off this site. I have watched it and have said nothing for years. Tired of it."

Since you have opened the door to hearsay, anecdotal evidence, I'll give you mine.

I have referred literally dozens of people to FreeRepublic as prospective members/contributors.

I have received literally dozens of "Thanks but no thanks" e-mails in return from some fine conservatives who surveyed the landscape at FR and decided it was nothing more than a blog aggregator.

People are simply not willing, nor do they see merit in clicking on a mess of one-line teasers that they can get on their own with a simple search.

To suggest that the bulk of the bloggers pimping purloined material on FR is the equivalent of new media personalities such as Coulter and Malkin is disingenuous at best.

We have had instances (too many to list) of bloggers taking stolen, copyrighted material, changing a few words and trying to use FR as a hit farm to get traffic for it. Likewise we have had bloggers who offer no content whatsoever, simply taking video material (again copyrighted) and putting a logo watermark on it and linking the result to their blog, then advertising it on FR.

This kind of activity not only makes FR look bad, it puts the site in precarious legal territory.

You can be "Tired of it." all you want, but in fact when Gunner and others expose this kind of fraud, they are doing FR and its members an immeasurable service.

Finally, I suggest you read what the man himself has to say about bloggers using his website:

"I have no complaint if a good conservative blogger posts his own material to FR, not as an excerpt to drive hits and discussion back to his blog, but rather to impart useful information to OUR readers and to promote and join in on the discussion and conservative activism HERE on FR. ... But unless we say otherwise your blog material should be posted to our bloggers forum and it would be best if you do not excerpt your own material and if you would actually join in on the discussion here on FR. We’re not really that interested in driving OUR traffic to YOUR blog. But if our readers see that you post useful information then they might start reading your site and that’s fine by me." It would seem that in this case at least, you were a remarkably inconstanant picker.

I have to agree with the moderator and Hummblegunner. I post some of my stuff from Examiner which must be excerpted.

Since it is my work I also post the article in its entirety in the comments section. I give the readers here the option of clinking on my link but not the necessity to read the article.

So why post on FR? I like to get opinions on my work. Freepers can be brutally honest and the grammar Nazis will turn you in for every mistake. I write to be read, and articles I think are of interest to Freepers I post under bloggers and personal.

I does get my goat when I see others posting excerpts only from Examiner or other blogs. If they really want to share and not just generate hits why not post the whole article? (I am assuming most posts are from the author). Don’t even get me started on bloggers who just copy other articles and call it their own. What’s the point? For a few pennies the writer is ensuring fewer readers when uncovered.

I agree 100%!

Here’s another fact:

Many businesses’ IT departments have firewalls that block unknown websites. Sometimes certain individuals in IT can get political and block Free Republic but allow Huff Post, Daily Kos, & even DU. Many Freepers have fought this hypocrisy and got management to unblock Free Republic or block Leftist sites, also.

So having fought hard to keep Free Republic as an approved site no one wants to see it degenerate into a blog aggregator of blocked sites that are impossible to read. If I excerpt my own blog and you can’t go to it—you cannot read the article. It’s just wrong.

Of course, there is the point of not surfing political sites at all—after all, you are supposed to be working, not surfing, on company time... But employers often lets workers use the computer while on break, lunch, etc., and that’s true for millions of workers.

Without a content concentrator, most of the material you speak of would not be read. Is that the objective?

Is that the objective?

The objective is for bloggers to post their full content rather than an excerpt.

No reason exists for them to excerpt their own material.

In what way does that keep anything from being read?

"Without a content concentrator, most of the material you speak of would not be read."

Does the material somehow become less concentrated and more readable on the blog than it is when posted here?

“Malkin, Coulter, WND, PJ Media, Lucianne, come to mind. Some left to start their own site, boards but many of them were promoted here by self or friend.”

Did they then provide a financial donation to FR for their financial success? No? Parasites. Using someone else’s software, servers, and bandwidth to financially benefit themselves. It would a symbiotic relationship if one fed the other, but when it is a one-way blog-pimper’s street then there is no relationship.
