Syria opposition slams Russia plan as ‘political maneuver’

Syria’s main opposition group denounced as a “political maneuver” a Russian plan to head off threatened punitive US air strikes on Syria by destroying the regime’s chemical weapons.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested on Monday that Damascus hand its chemical arsenal to international control and have it destroyed.

“The proposal of Lavrov is a political maneuver and is part of useless procrastination that will only result in more deaths and destruction for the Syrian people,” said a statement from the opposition Syrian National Coalition late Monday.

The Coalition added that “the violation of international law requires an appropriate international response”—an indirect call to the administration of Barack Obama not to abandon the possibility of military strikes against Damascus.

Obama called Lavrov’s plan a “significant breakthrough,” and US Secretary of State John Kerry said that the move could stop possible military action against Syria.

US lawmakers are due to vote on a resolution authorizing the use of force against the Assad regime in retaliation for alleged chemical attacks launched near the capital on August 21 in which hundreds are said to have died.

“The perpetrators of war crimes cannot be exonerated and crimes against humanity cannot be washed away by offering political concessions or by handing over the instrument used to commit the crimes,” the opposition said, referring to the chemical weapons.

The rebel Free Syrian Army chief of staff Selim Idriss on Monday accused the regime of President Bashar al-Assad and his allies in Russia of lying, after Damascus said it welcomed the proposal.

Political Maneuver. What the hell else could any action in that situation be??? What would bombing Assad be if not a “political maneuver?” or sequestering the chemicals?

Weird source for that story. Know anything about AFP or the Manila Times because they picked it up from AFP? BTW “Conservative” talk radio listeners there are several “hosts” who are unwilling to give any credence to articles suggesting the rebels were the ones that did the gas attack. of the national syndicated both “Red Eye” hosts, and Hugh Hewitt (favors action) , will summarily dismiss any caller suggesting that idea.

Time to boycott the radio hosts you are referring to. Thanks for the info. It’s time to put bankrupt Obama’s propagandists.

I don’t have the technical facilities to post articles on what’s being talked about on talk shows. I wish I did because what is needed is that they get monitored and reviewed then reported on. So others know where they’re comming from. But I’m not in favor of boycotting because they are still “useful”.

The attack could have been carried out by Syria's closest ally, Hezbollah. If that's the case, Iran has some xplaining to do.
