The sun is out! The birds are singing! The open road calls! Your vinyl interior is burning itself into your thighs! Yes, summer is here and it's time to go on some road trips. What car do you take, though?

Has to be a convertible:
And a way to keep cool:
Went east through the lower tier route to southern Florida, then toodled up through NC, TN, Arkansas, etc. on the way back.
As we were dropping into our valley on the last leg, we both commented that we could easily just keep goin....
Ahhh.... the ‘65’s. Great cars.
My Dad had the 65 Buick Wildcat. 4 door. I can’t recall if he had the 425 cubic inch V8 or “only” the 401.
I do remember all 7 of us (plus luggage) making road trips. 75-80 mph was an easy pace. All day long.
We just did a road trip down to Georgia (Chickamauga National Military Park) earlier this week and are planning a huge trip out West (Colorado, Wyoming, etc...) next Spring.
Chick Magnet!
When I was 9yo, my parents took me on a trip from Oklahoma City to Brunswick, GA and back via New Orleans. I rode laying down in the back of a VW Bug with the seats folded down. That’s not a good way to take a road trip.
They got about two-thirds of my cassettes when they took that case. I’ve still got a pretty good collection in another case. The upside is that now, as I’m replacing them, I can be selective and just replace the really good stuff. There were some that I never listened to. I won’t replace those, just the good ones. It should be a nice concentrated set of good music when I’m done.
BTW, I wonder what the thieves thought when they opened that case and realized it was a bunch of cassettes...
Those big block high compression V-8s were absolutely great engines. I sold mine in 1973 to a Mexican in San Antonio. The water pump had started making a noise but he knew it was an inexpensive repair.
It had over 250,000 miles and did not use oil. All I ever did was change the plugs, oil and filter plus replace the AC compressor seal. I think I had to replace the alternator once but can’t think of another repair in all that 250,000 miles.
The positraction made a noise for the last few years but never tore up. The one thing which was surprising was how nimble it was. It really handled well plus would run almost with the true muscle cars.
I understand cassette tapes are all the rage these days. [Which has raised their price from nothing...to something]
Radio Flyer Woody version. Great mileage but a little slow. But what the heck, it’s a road trip!!!
Buick Electra’s were great cars.
A good old full sized American station wagon, what else? That’s what they were made to do.

A full-sized pickup truck with a cap on it is THE best vehicle for a long road trip. Plenty of space for storing gear or taking a quick nap, and if you’re driving a Ford F-150 it’s a very comfortable ride!
My aunt and uncle had Electra 225’s. They loved those cars and enjoyed many road trips. One year my uncle traded one in on a Lincoln but went back to the Electra 225.
That was a good read. What’s funny is that I’m impressed with how good a cassette can sound. When you have a quality player with Dolby and a clean cassette I think it comes close to rivaling a CD, at least in a non pristine listening environment like a car.
My uncle had a 1968 Wildcat. He was retired and sold travel trailers part time and he owned one as well. He took great care of his ‘Cat. I asked him once how many miles to the gallon (OF OIL) did he get?
He said he never had to add oil. Except when he changed the oil. Which he did every 1,000 miles.
“What? You change your oil every one thousand miles?”
He did. And he never had engine problems.
I remember another friend of mine. His parents had a 1969 Buick Estate Wagon. They used it to pull their Airstream.
It was an old 1963 school bus that my Dad converted into a RV/camper.We traveled all up and down the east coast. Me and my 5 brothers and sisters, with Dad and Mom....The best years of my life,
We finally settled in Florida.
I learned to drive in a 67 Buick wildcat convertible. That thing would move!
Best recent road vehicle was a loaded grand marquis. I swear, if a wheel fell off, you’d probably say, “Did you hear something?”. ;-)
