Owning a car will cost the average American driver more than $9,100 this year, the AAA has revealed.
The automotive club unveiled its annual study of driving costs on Tuesday and found that the average sedan owner will rack of $0.61 for every mile on the road.
SUV drivers are in for even more pain in the wallet - $0.77 per mile or $11,600 a year.
The AAA estimates include nearly all expenses of taking to the road - from the cost of the car itself to gasoline, tires, insurance and repairs.
The data estimates that Americans drive 15,000 miles a year and drive a standard-size sedan like a Toyota Camry or Ford Fusion.
Last year, driving cost $8,900....

Therefore I take the train, for which there is a $20,000 per year subsidy.
Thanks, suckers!
Just another cost the worker endures while those on entitlements live large. My wife commutes 15K miles in a camry each year so I guess the number is pertainent to us. 9+K before even getting a pay check...why work?
“insurance”
But wait, I get a safe driver discount, and no accidents in 20 years discount, only somehow my cost of insurance goes UP every year?
Oh yea, I see it. That item called “uninsured motorist.” Since we have NO intention of EVER getting serious about forcing people to have insurance, all the rest of us can just keep paying more.
Government: they just can’t wait to keep doing new things, yet they never have the resources to do the thing they are already supposed to be doing.
Telecommuting is awesome! *gloat*
I hate the train.
But the stupid liberals voted for it, and the economics are clear to me. I can drive at >$10K / year in my Tundra, or take the train for around $2K.
I have to take them up on their stupid subsidy, and lousy train. I can’t walk away from $8K.
It costs me $12-15 to drive into town. I’m unemployed. Here’s the kicker. In 1964 gas cost .30/gallon. A silver dollar would buy three gallons. Today, a silver dollar is worth $22. You can buy 6 gallons with it. That means that in real terms gas costs less than half what cost in 1964. That $4 we spend on a gallon is due to the fact that the Fed has printed so much money that it is now worth a fraction of what it was in 1964.
At least on the train you get get stuff done rather than staring at Obama Biden bumper stickers;)
I’m billable one direction.
The other direction, I read the WSJ.
The main problem is Big Brotherism; the train despots are tiring.
Insurance?
No habla Engaliase, no drivers license, no care.
There are substantial costs for owning a freedom of movement machine even if you commune with comrades to work.
lol
My bug-out-mobile is in fine shape.
When someone accuses me of saving the planet when I ride my bike to the train station, I remind them that my V8 Truck only gets 16 MPG.
;-)
I don’t spend that much. Live close to work, and do preventative maintenance, and keep your car once you pay it off. My cost is probably half that, maybe less.
Many will find a way to cut that cost by quit working and going on welfare and food stamps. Go from a $9,100 expense, getting up early, paying your bills, etc. to income directly to your bank account, food stamps, free school breakfasts/lunches/dinners, subsidized housing, utilities paid, free medical care and a bonus every spring from the IRS. Yes, quit your job and come to Obamaland ... no charges, fees, or payments ... of course other than your soul!
What about those that use a motorcycle fro transport?
Insurance is cheaper, 2 tires instead of 4 inspections are cheaper, mileage is higher, etc. etc.
I figure about $11,000 per year for my driving, so that’s an accurate story. I usually work from home so that is a nice bonus not paying out that money all the time.
“2 tires instead of 4”
But at the same cost and only 6,000-10,000 before they wear out. Motorcycles tires are ridiculously expensive.
I have a 2010 f150 with just over 60,000 miles. figures I’m a statistical outlier.
