Wendy’s might close up to 130 restaurants
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | March 1, 2013

Posted on 03/09/2013 4:01:22 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

As Wendy’s Co. continues its effort to modernize restaurants, up to 130 U.S. restaurants could be closed in the coming year because they are not making enough money to be worthy of being remodeled or rebuilt.

The news came yesterday as the Dublin-based company announced earnings for the fourth quarter and full year.

Wendy’s is beginning the third year of its Image Activation program to raze, rebuild or remodel nearly half of its 600 company-owned stores by the end of 2015.

So far, the Dublin-based fast-food restaurant has rebuilt 58 company-owned stores since 2011, and it plans to rebuild or remodel another 100 company stores and 100 franchised stores this year.

The first year, the rebuilt stores “drove average sales increases of 25 percent, and those results continue to hold today,” Emil Brolick, the company’s chairman and CEO, told securities analysts during a conference call....

‘’’had a “baconator”...

Okay, now ya did it. Haven’t had one of those in way too long, darnit. I’m getting 2-3 tomorrow, and will reheat the extra one to kill The Evening Munchies.

I went to a Wendy’s last year. Gave it a try. It was bad. Not going back ever. Overall a bad experience. Did not get food poisoning like a previous poster though, so I guess I was lucky.

Their burgers aren’t bad at all. Their chili is horrible, I guess I am biased because I live in Texas!

You're used to chili that was intended to be chili. I think they take their unsold burgers and put them in the chili pot.

Wendy’s Frosty

Freeze the ice cream maker bowl for 24 to 48 hours.
Put plastic wrap on the bowl to prevent ice crystals
from forming.

1 quart rich, thick chocolate milk
14 oz can sweetened condensed milk

In a medium bowl, whisk together chocolate milk and
sweetened condensed milk until combined. Pour into
canister of 1-1/2 quart ice cream maker and freeze
according to your ice cream maker’s directions.

Turn your ice cream maker on before pouring. This
helps to prevent the liquid from sticking to the
sides right away. Pull off the plastic wrap from your
ice cream maker bowl, and pour the mixture into the
bowl as it is turning. Blend for about 25 minutes for
a thick consistency. Serve in cups (with spoons).

With a blender

In a large mixing bowl, combine chocolate milk and
sweetened condensed milk. Mix the ingredients using a
large blender. Once thoroughly combined, put the mixture
into a freezer safe container and freeze for 2 or more
hours, making sure you stir thoroughly every half hour
until desired thickness is reached.

Wendy’s Franchisee Owner Blames ‘Obamacare’ For Cutting Back Employees’ Hours January 9, 2013

I'm shocked. Are you shocked?

No, and that is how I am reading this as well. Quite a few things Obama has done has increased the costs of small businesses, like fast food restaurants. Not every location is equally profitable, and if the government raises the bar on everyone, some will now be unprofitable, where they previously were before.

Announcing a remodeling is a good way to close the newly unprofitable stores without starting a political controversy that may be bad for PR. Expect more announcements from other chains.

Not long ago I ate at Wendy's and thoroughly enjoyed it.

There’s one in Houston but it, too, is very very difficult to get to now with all the traffic. Used to get the Jr. Bacon cheeseburger for $.99. Since they sold it plain, always had them add lettuce, tomato, onions and lite mayo and always paid $.99. Last time I ordered though the $.99 one with all the add-ons, they charged for each item separately and the cost was almost $3.00 so said no thanks. Carl’s has a much juicier, better and bigger one for almost the same cost and since they are in the suburbs are easier to get in and out.

Always surprised me that parts of Johnson County don’t seem to allow fast food places. My oldest grandson really misses not having tacos from Jack in the Box up there.

...and if I was able to look at the stores that are remodeled carefully, I would bet that after the remodeling, they will have installed labor saving devices which will cut down on the manual labor requirements, so that the staff can be downsized.

Not everyone likes it crisp. I like mine cooked but a bit soft.

I understand. But getting a mouthful of warm limp fat doesn't float my boat. (and that's not some sexual comment either, for the pervs reading this)

I worked at Wendy’s when I was in high school, for 2 years. We used to have the grill covered with hamburger patties, so they could be served as they were bought.
There was a stainless steel container in the cooler where we put the burgers that were never sold, and over cooked (sometimes cremated)
It was company policy, and formal instruction that those leftover burgers were to be ground up by hand and recycled as the beef they use to make the chili with, we used to crumble up the meat, and add the powder, and water, and it went into a slow cooker until it was served.
Needless to say, I never eat Wendy’s chili

My worst food poisoning incidents were from an independent Chinese Buffet in Gulfport, Mississippi and a Sonic in Biloxi that was blown to smithereens by Katrina, as it was right on the beach.

Oh no, I hope not in Nephi, Utah. As we leave SLC early mornings on our way back to southern Utah, Wendy’s in Nephi is 90 miles and the perfect pit stop after morning coffee needs draining and refilled.

Fast food is pretty ruthless competition. I can see why a chain would close the lowest performing locations as demographics change over time.

We’re talking 130 outlets out of 6650 or <2%

Oh thanks for the stomach pain. lol.

For a while there I thought had become a chili snob.

Our family likes to make it ourselves, slow cooking pinto or red beans for hours, adding in the chili powder, tomatoes and fresh beef we browned in a frying pan, and other stuff.

If we are in a hurry we might use cans of Ranch Style Beans to avoid cooking for hours.

The profit margin is probably tiny, in some places I think those dollar menu items are money losers

This Lent, I have discovered Wendy's Pacific cod sandwich. It's quite good by fast food standards, and head and shoulders above McD's fish filet.

New competition keeps increasing also.

Culvers, Jack in the Box, and 5 Guys are newcomers popping up around our area.

In addition to
Hardees
McD
Burger King
White Castle
Wendys
Taco Bell
Chic Fil A
Sonic
Rallys
KFC
Steak N Shake
Long John Silver
Arbys
A&W
DQ
Subway (and a zillion more)
