As Wendys Co. continues its effort to modernize restaurants, up to 130 U.S. restaurants could be closed in the coming year because they are not making enough money to be worthy of being remodeled or rebuilt.
The news came yesterday as the Dublin-based company announced earnings for the fourth quarter and full year.
Wendys is beginning the third year of its Image Activation program to raze, rebuild or remodel nearly half of its 600 company-owned stores by the end of 2015.
So far, the Dublin-based fast-food restaurant has rebuilt 58 company-owned stores since 2011, and it plans to rebuild or remodel another 100 company stores and 100 franchised stores this year.
The first year, the rebuilt stores drove average sales increases of 25 percent, and those results continue to hold today, Emil Brolick, the companys chairman and CEO, told securities analysts during a conference call....

They are reamodeling the one near us
Based on their recent ads, had a “baconator” the other day
For Pete’s sake - make the bacon crisp and you won’t have to close stores !!!!!!!!!!
nearest Wendy’s is Marquette, MI. wish it was closer, not like it is next door 92 miles one way. build more Wendy’s in smaller communities. otherwise nearest fast food McD’s or taco bell
They closed one in Overland Park, Ks about 30 days ago. It had been open about 15 years in a location with poor access .
that’s too bad they got some good stuff. Seems everything is in decline, thanks to President Odoomengloom
I really like Wendy’s. Too bad.
Which is more likely? Draw more business thru remodling or menu changes? Frankly, as long as an eatery is clean, I don’t care what it looks like. It’s the food that draws me.
I thought they were franchise restaurants. Why not sell them to entrepreneurs and make them franchises?
Their burgers aren’t bad at all.
Their chili is horrible, I guess I am biased because I live in Texas!
Some of these chains have overbuilt, or they built more than a bad economy can support. Remember Krispy Kreme’s rapid expansion and pull back?
I love their chili
I'm shocked. Are you shocked?
Not everyone likes it crisp. I like mine cooked but a bit soft.
However, the one thing it must have is flavor.
Just recently, I got food poisoning at Wendy’s.
I think it's good too. Actually has a lot of meat in it if you get them to scoop deep in the pot. Sometimes they scoop from the top with the result being watery chili.
They used to have the best food poisoning before they changed the menu.
I’m in Marshfield, WI presently and the one and only Wendy’s closed about a month and a half ago.
They could just raise their prices. Problem solved in Obamaville!
They have the best chicken ceasar wraps. And they are a buck.
Always too thin for me, I guess I just like the way we make it at home
