Pope Benedict XVI resigns and moral cretins tweet hate, death wishes... (left wing reaction)

In a nearly unprecedented move Pope Benedict XVI will step down at the end of the month. Twitter was buzzing with the news and, sadly, gutter sludge crawled out of the cracks.

Vile fake retweets are coming in.

Indeed. What the morally bankrupt and hate-filled don’t understand is that the pope will pray for them and hold them in his heart. True tolerance and love is beyond them.

Predicted this. We can also expect six months of blowhards in the media whining that the new Pope isn’t progressive enough on abortion or gay marriage.

These comments are utter garbage unworthy of posting.

That being said, let me add mine:

Hopefully Ratzinger’s replacement will have an epiphany and revoke all the evil caused as a result of Vatican II.

I would hope that some FReepers would at least be a bit classier in how they expressed their opinions, at least.

I’m not Catholic but I find it impressive that he steps away from power and glory for the right reasons. I wish him well.

Just curious... Will the Pope have much influence over who replaces him?

Vatican II was 50 years ago. I fear his successor will be too young to remember. Let us pray for a conservative, wise, and holy man to take his place. Long live Joseph Ratzinger.

“Just curious... Will the Pope have much influence over who replaces him?”

Good question. It’s been 600 years since a Pope resigned.I wonder if he will be part of the College of Cardinals who will participate in the conclave.

Although he is a Cardinal, he is also over 80 and once a Cardinal turns 81 he is no longer an elector.

Even if he were eligible by age to be an elector, I think he would recuse himself for the sake of form.

what happened, why did he resign?

From the Holy Father's statement:

After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.

Any speculation outside of his statement is probably not productive. So I will take him at his word.

I hope a liberal doesn’t get the job

You and me both. However, I have to trust the Holy Spirit on this matter.

Well said. Normally my mind is filled with hateful thoughts about such people, but, this morning, the Holy Spirit must be nudging me because I feel sorry for them.

Prayers sent for the Holy Father and his successor.

The other thread must have been pulled for duplication.

“B16 damned all Protestants to Hell so even though I don’t approve of hate directed at the narrow minded bigot, a little ribbing is acceptable and justifiable...”

“It follows that these separated churches and Communities, though we believe they suffer from defects, are deprived neither of significance nor importance in the mystery of salvation. In fact the Spirit of Christ has not refrained from using them as instruments of salvation, whose value derives from that fullness of grace and of truth which has been entrusted to the Catholic Church”— Pope B16, Dominus Iesus”

As far as Christian faiths claiming that another isn’t Christian, there’s a vocal minority of nonCatholic Christians who go beyond thinking the Catholic Church is wrong on many grave things to thinking Catholics aren’t Christians. FR actually bans some of the things produced from this mouth-breathing wackadoo-ism, because it makes FR look too stupid.

Freegards

When was that quote? If after 7/10/2007 then it is an insincere back-peddle.—Happy Rain

Anyhow, It wasn’t a back peddle, I remember the circumstances clearly. A report misquoted the Pope, the internet blew up. The original misquote was ‘Pope says Protestants not Christians.’ You still see the article posted on FR every few years, and usually clocks out at 800 posts or so until someone posted what actually happened. If you google around you will find these threads.

Dominus Iesus was published in 2000, I think.
