The Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show was expected to bring $44 million in direct spending to the region, according to the Hershey Harrisburg Regional Visitors Bureau.
Now that the show has been postponed -- with no reschedule date set, and none imminent -- many hotels and restaurants could be in for a difficult winter.
"This is a hard time of the year to fill hotels," said Rick Dunlap, a spokesman for the bureau. "A lot of these hoteliers relied on this show to make their budget for the early part of the year."
The $44 million in direct spending the bureau projects does not include secondary expenses that also bring money to the region, like sales at gas stations or for supplies.
The show, billed as the largest outdoor sports show in the state, was to have more than 1,400 vendors. Many of those vendors traveled from out of the area and would have needed hotel rooms for the show's week-long run.
Suggest you check out the 2012 election map for PA by county to see how red most of the state is. The solid blue areas are not in the vicinity of these hotels and restaurants.
It suggests they were being pressured by somebody with the power to produce a bigger hit against them than they are now experiencing.
Then it wouldn't be called the "EASTERN Sports and Outdoor Show........
And just because Texas is "EAST" of New Mexico doesn't mean they are really in the East......LOL!
There are more licensed hunters in Pennsylvania than any other state. Michigan is 2nd, Texas is 3rd.
Dauphin County went for Obama and Casey. Paybacks a bitch.
“Seems like Texas or some other Red State would be a better place.
“
Seventy percent of the population is in the eastern time zone. Northeasterners are NOT as used to thousand mile drives as westerners. Plus the shows provide perhaps the only opportunity for easterners to touch and examine gear that is available all over Texas and other western states.
Comcast pulled out of the show before the NRA did, actually.
This would be a good time for some other entity to scoop up this show. Maybe the NRA could run it.
My man, you don’t know much more about Pennsylvania than what the talking heads on TV say. Most Pennsylvania counties are “red”; at least half a dozen of the 67 PA counties were over 70% for Romney this past election. Many school districts in these “red” counties have multiple school holidays explicitly for hunting.

It sounds like they are laying blame and guilt on Businesses for standing up for their constitutional rights. The blame should and does fall on Reed for refusing to backtrack on a bad decision.

Guilty.
I think of Pennsylvania and I think of Mayor Nutter and other east coast liberal states influenced by ding bats like Spector, Rendell, Murtha and other such losers.
Thanks all for setting me straight on some of the finer aspects of PA.
Unfortunately Reed Exibitions will survive this. I was researching to see if they are doing any other shows so I could avoid them and pass the word. Their website shows them managing 390 shows, assume a one year snapshot, with only 29 being in the US. The only show that would remotely interest me is a hardware show in Vegas, which is a few thousand miles out of my way. Hopefully, when the dust settles a Cabelas or Pro Bass or some other 2A supporter steps up to get the Harrisburg show back together in the future.
This situation is 100% the fault of Reed. If anyone losing money wants to moan and scream, they should direct it to Reed and only Reed. Just my opinion.
Reed is learning that choices have consequences. I hope the NSSF gets someone else for the SHOT show from now on.
Our principles are not for sale at any price.
Though I do wish we could compile a list of companies that supported this boycott who are seeing real financial hardship due to the postponement. I will do business with these companies over the appeasers. We should all do the same.
Many other Northeastern states are in the same situation as Pennsylvania. Voters in a few big cities tip the elections towards liberals. If you take out just a few urban areas from the 2012 election results Republican candidates would have won in a landslide. Here in New Hampshire many towns reliably vote Republican, but a few bastions of students and liberals in cities outnumber the rural residents.
What the fools in the cities forget is that they depend on the rural areas for everything the eat, their energy, and much of what they purchase in stores.
Without a Second Amendment, nation would lose Constitution
Our Founding Fathers were right in allowing only property owners the right to vote.
Letting ubran takers vote is like handing liquor and the car keys to 15 year old boys.
East Tennessee would be a great spot...within a day's drive for millions of sporting folk...
