This week is National Migration Week, a campaign of the American bishops aimed at comprehensive immigration reform in order to legalize 11 million undocumented immigrants. The campaign has five goals: Provide a path to citizenship for undocumented persons; preserve family unity as a cornerstone of our national immigration system; provide legal paths for low-skilled immigrant workers to come and work in the United States; restore due process protections to immigration enforcement policies; address the root causes of migration caused by persecution and economic disparity.
Since 1975 the Immigration and Legal Services (ILS) department of Catholic Charities of Dallas, Inc. has provided a broad range of immigration counseling and representation to immigrants and their families. Thousands of immigrants from Mesoamerica, Europe, Africa and Asia have been assisted by Catholic Charities ILS.
Migration is a major biblical theme. Abrahams family moved to Canaan and then to Egypt. Jacob and his sons made their way to Egypt, and the Israelites made their exodus to the Promised Land. The people of Israel returned to Judah from exile, and, of course, there was Joseph and Marys journey to Bethlehem and their flight into Egypt. All were journeys of hope, either for refuge or a better life.
Which of us does not have ancestors who migrated to Texas, by ship or plane from Africa, Europe, Asia, and Central America or by foot across the Bering land bridge? But our memories are short and we need to be reminded from whence we came as God reminded the Israelites: You shall not oppress or afflict a resident alien, for you were once aliens residing in the land of Egypt. Exodus 22:20.

How does your position square with the Catechism of The Catholic Church, 2nd Edition, which states: . .. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the maaterial and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, TO OBEY ITS LAWS to assist in carrying civic burdens. (CCC 2241). Why do Church Leaders always omit this teaching? Catholic Bishops. Cardinal Mahonys equated SB 1070 to the techniques of German Nazis and Russian Communists (http://cardinalrogermahonyblogsla.blogspot.com/2010/04/arizonas-new-anti-immigrant-law.html) and Archbishop Dolan equated it with the of Klu Klux Klan and KNow Nothing Party of the 19th century (http://www.catholic.org/politics/story.php?id=36322). When actually reads SB 1070, whose papers please provsion is pursuant to existing federal law that has been on the books since 1940, one cannot find an even remote justification for the remarks of Cardinals Dolan and Mahony.

This one comment from his blog, the others are links related to what he said. Thanks
Has Kevin J. Farrell gone feral? Or rogue? Can the Pope replace him with one more orthodox since this bishop has clearly gone off the rails into deep liberalism?
No, it is not.
EMIGRATION is a natural right - when all else fails you have a God-given right to vote against a government with your feet and go somewhere else.
IMMIGRATION is subject to the laws and customs of the nation you are entering. And if you immigrate here illegally you should be subject to expulsion with extreme prejudices.
Why are so many high-ranking clergy such morons? Does theology rot the brain that badly?
Yeah sure. Just like when the Germans “migrated” into Russia in 1940.
>> Immigration is a natural right <<
Bank robbery is a natural right. Banks have money, people need money: QED taking money from banks is perfectly OK.
“Laws” are silly constructs people with means use to repress the 99%
(If I have to tag this with /sarcasm I am SO going to hurt someone!)
Has the definition of ‘reform’ been revised to allow wanton lawbreaking, to say nothing of illicit looting of the public treasury?
Can we ‘reform’ laws regarding guns, taxes, property improvement, vehicle emissions and so forth in the same spirit as the lefties intend?
end all welfare and free goodies, including schools, to illegals
The Bishop is just showing how Uberliberal the Catholic Church has become. Heck, the local Catholic Charity advertises it supports “Economic Justice”
I wouldn’t mind all that much if the Catholic Church footed the bill (like they have any money after settling all the homosexual / pedophile / rape lawsuits) but they don’t. They import these people, then demand I (and you, and you, and all of us) pay to support them.
Sorry, your rev, no sale. In case you missed the memo, Communism failed.
Well, I know for certain that tax exempt status is NOT a natural right. So, if the Bishop wants to keep pursuing a political campaign, he can start paying his “fair share”.
How about a lawless invasion of the Vatican or Halls of Congress? Is that not a “natural right” too?
Ship the so-called America Bishops to Central America where they can help address the poverty issues in that region.
I AGREE. TED KENNEDY COMPLETELY REWROTE THE IMMIMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION ACT AND WHERE OUR FUTURE CITIZENS WERE TO COME FROM. PRIOR TO THAT-THEY ALL ASSIMILATED, SPOKE ENGLISH, AND; THERE WAS NO PRESS 2.
I believe that save for basic screening for the diseased and criminal, all should be welcome.
I also believe that save for basic safety net (bare sustinence and shelter) for the non-able-bodied, all “entitlements” should be eliminated.
I observe that the unconstitutional proliferation of the latter makes the former untenable.
This nation was founded on anyone coming in and making their own way - and was founded to throw off “redistribution”.
Go to hell, Kevin.
Seriously.
Bishop Kevin Farrell:
“Immigration is a natural right”
No, Bishop. It ain’t...
“I believe that save for basic screening for the diseased and criminal, all should be welcome.”
If one million try to come here, should they “all” be welcome?
If thirty million try to come here, should they “all” be welcome?
If 100 million try to come here, should they “all” be welcome?
If 500 million try to come here, should they “all” be welcome?
If one billion try to come here, should they, too, “all” be welcome?
You said “all”.
Words mean things...
Catholic Theology is really very sound and rational-—subsidiarity and respect for the nation’s law is essential. Natural Rights includes the Right of self-defense and that can be expanded to include the State, etc.. A nation has the Right to have Laws and have them respected by ALL who choose to come. This Bishop is irrational.
He is advocating for confusion, chaos and destruction of a civil society and Rule of Law.
He should be focusing on the horrid countries these people are fleeing—and castigate them, never the most Just country in the history of the World.
He should be fighting for a Revolution in the countries that are Tyrannies....but no—they attack the “good” guys because it is safer for them.
They need to watch, “For Greater Glory”. Look at what evil Marxism/Socialism is and attack the TRUE evils in society.
These “Bishops” really need to train in the seminary for longer periods or something and they better ditch the “modernism” infiltration of Marxists and that “social justice” cr*p which is code word for Radical Egalitarianism which denies the Nature of Man and destroys the idea of Charity.
I agree hordes should open, ideally, though I don’t it’s a good idea given the Welfare State and generally meddlesome government. Immigration as a natural right, though, is absurd. It would destroy sovereignty, as well as the concept of private property. The idea is that the people own the land, they cede some of their power over to the government, it assumes “eminent domain” authority, and therefore has the power of exclusion. Just like you have the right to bar someone from entering your house (unless they are a SWAT team fishing for drugs), or order someone to leave your house.
It doesn’t actually work that way, but that’s the mythology. And you can’t throw it away without chucking most, maybe all, natural rights.
