Michigan's unions will devote all their resources to fight the recently passed right-to-work law by trying to overturn it in court, doing recalls of politicians, holding rallies and trying to get it put on the ballot, according to a top union leaders comments during a recent teleconference.
Al Garrett, president of Michigan AFSCME Council 25, and Larry Roehrig, secretary treasurer, laid out their plans about how to attack the law. The conference call was recorded and Michigan Capitol Confidential obtained the audio file.
"There is going to be retribution," Garrett said.
Garrett predicted that right-to-work law would be repealed in some manner within two years.
He said recall action would start "as soon as we can." He said union lawyers are combing over the law to see if it can be overturned in court.
Any legal action wouldnt begin until after the legislators are out of session, which Garrett estimated would be Dec. 27.
"We dont want to give them an opportunity to correct their mistakes," he said. "There is going to be undoubtedly some petition effort."
Garrett said the union will publish the names of the Republican legislators who voted for the right-to-work legislation that Gov. Rick Snyder signed into law Dec. 11. Garrett said the union would post those legislators names on the union's website.
"We will not forget the folks who did this to us," he said.
About 17.5 percent of Michigan's workforce belongs to a union. A right-to-work law gives workers the freedom to choose whether they want to pay dues or fees to a union. Previously, workers could be fired for not paying dues or fees.
Roehrig said 116 people chose not to be members of the Michigan AFSCME Council 25 and instead paid agency fees.
Garrett said he expects a few more than 100 to exercise their new right to opt-out of the union.
"There is no cure for stupid, and thats what we saw this week from the Republican side of the aisle," Roehrig said.
TOTALITARIANS on the march!
Prepare. Persevere.
Stuff it, you fat pigs.
People would like to be able to work without having to pay tribute to your fat millionaire gangster bosses.
I’m sick of these union thugs.
HAS TONY CAMARGO BEEN ARRESTED YET? HELLO? POLICE? FEDS? HELLO?????
Poor baby, your meal ticket is about to get slashed from having less dues to spend. It sucks to be you, get over it.
Problem is, regardless of public support or condemnation, THE POWER OF THE POS POTUS IS BEHIND THEM!
This was years in coming and the GOP did their homework. Despite all the tough talk from the unions, they’re screwed and know it.
It's the union way: just ask Jimmy Hoffa.
Some careful judge-shopping might allow the thug unions to eventually find some scumbag Democrat judge who will issue injunctions or whatever. But if I recall, the Michigan Supreme Court has mostly judges with integrity, so hopefully the union thug efforts will do little more than cost them a ton of money in wasted legal fees.
...Which, of course, is a good thing in itself because that would leave less for them to donate to the campaigns of their communist Democrat politicians.
I don’t care that Obama is behind them. He didn’t win a single seat in the Michigan legislature and can kiss our collective asses.
It couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch. Unions have outlived their usefulness.
Another problem they have with their cute little threat of retribution is that many of the legislators who voted for this are term limited and won’t be back anyway. Now they’ve got to convince people that legislators who weren’t even in office are to blame.
Considering the expense of the steps they plan to take, they know this to be a blatant lie! They are clearly worried of losing far more than a few hundred people paying dues.
Even though 40% of members may have preferred RTW, the unions will still be able to get it on the ballot. Signing petitions is like "card check". You'll get two union thugs at your elbow with the petition shoved in your face. A lot of folks will fold and sign.
I thought the law WAS retribution - against union tyranny and excess?
There is going to be retribution,” Garrett said
Go to hell, you worthless leech.
Joining a union is such a good idea that they want to make it against the law not to.
Union employees who "opt out" will be threatened, beaten, or worse?
Why, if Unions are such a Utopia, are they afraid of "Right-to-Work"????
its a good thing we have so much money we can afford to give all those hard workign people (who already get paid more than the private sector peons) a raise
