Screw The DNC Convention I Got A Question About My Cats!
Focualt's Pendulum

Posted on 09/05/2012 5:18:50 PM PDT by Focault's Pendulum

I have two tuxedos. Momma and Lady. Both about five years old. Momma is a finicky eater. Lady eats anything put in front of her. They're both rescues a year apart, as I took them in from the woods. They had to have been abandoned. They took to the house and proceeded to take it over.

That's Okay I enjoy their company except when they wake me up at four in the morning and say "feed us"!

Now the question:
Momma used to drink from my aquarium and indoor fountain. no problems. I finally got her to drink from a drinking bowl. She now touches the drinking bowl with her front paw on the surface water several times before she drinks. It's like she is testing the surface tension.

What sort of behavior is this? It's not bad, but I'm curious.

THIS bad girl Bijou (11 lbs. of glorious show-quality Maine Coon) liked to play "spin the water bowl" with her giant tufted paws. Ever hear of centrifugal force? She also liked to dip those giant paws in the water and daintily drink water from the underside. I finally designed and had a craftsman build a solid oak water/food bowl feeder to hold the stainless steel bowls. Case solved!

One thing for sure about cats is they're weird and that includes water.

Don’t ask me. My cat drinks from the toilet whenever she gets the chance. :(

Cats have crummy depth perception in the few inches close to their face (though it’s good further away — better to catch mice that way). If the water is completely still, she may be having trouble telling exactly how far away it is (the bad depth perception) and thus she is testing it with her paw to make sure.

My last kitty did this, flicking drops onto the mirror until she learned how handy the moisture was for cleaning.

She also trained me to let the faucet drip for her if she stared at it. Funny kitties.

I’m so sorry.

Often their lives may be extended thru medicine but not cured. After a while it becomes a quality of life issue, and a question of who really benefits from the extension.

I had to put down my little kitty last Friday myself.

I have always heard to get 2 together. It is SO TRUE!

Concur. We have two sets (ferals acquired by circumstance) and it does seem to work out well.

You don’t want to take them on too long a walk. It might exhaust them.

I know. They have to nap and rest up for their next meal.

I WILL pray for y'all. This has got to be one of the hardest things we are called to do when we open our hearts to welcome and love God's creatures. Other than parrots and such like birds, I don't know of any other animals that could outlive us. It is a price we pay in tears for all the joy and laughter they give us. I will pray for strength and comfort as you cross this bridge with your kitteh, Michel. I believe they know when their time has come and they are grateful to have us with them, to kiss them, softly speak their names and caress their bodies as they drift off to painless and peaceful sleep. My heart is with you!

Just wondering if they keep your ears worm when it's cold outside?
