Fighting back tears, the parents of slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin stood beside the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. and relatives of Chicago area murder victims on Saturday to stress the need to end senseless gun violence.
We are the voice of Trayvon Martin, Martins mother Sybrina Fulton said.
Hes not here to speak for himself so we as his parents have decided instead of sitting back and not doing anything, this is what we have decided to do, to help our community and to help other parents.
As she spoke about her son, Fulton also detailed her familys Justice for Trayvon Foundation, which helps teens identify signs of racial profiling. She also called on Congress to amend Floridas Stand Your Ground law, which allows a person in fear of bodily harm to use force, even deadly force, in the face of a perceived threat.
The unarmed hoodie-clad Martin was allegedly killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla. on Feb. 26, sparking nationwide protest and cries of injustice against African Americans.
Zimmerman, who is awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge, has claimed self-defense and said he only fired because Trayvon Martin attacked him.
On Saturday, Tracy Martin recalled the day he learned his son was gunned down.
By law, the Florida-based countys morgue couldnt let the elder Martin see the body. Instead, he was forced to identify his son by gruesome crime scene photos.
As any of you know as parents, or family members of slain victims, to look at a crime scene photo, its very disturbing, Tracy Martin said at the Rainbow PUSH headquarters, 930 East 50th Street.
...That was certainly very disturbing to just see that picture of my son on the ground dead. That will be ingrained in my memory for the rest of my life.
Jackson said its time to stop the killing, pointing out that nearly 30,000 people in the country die from gun violence each year.
He also addressed recent reports that showed Trayvon Martin had trace amounts of marijuana in his system, saying it had nothing to do with his death.
Its the fact that he was profiled and pursued, Jackson said. ...Its just a clear cut case of what happened.
The civil rights leader Saturday was also joined by relatives of other murder victims, including the family of Darnell Donerson and Jason Hudson, the mother and brother of Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson who were killed by the stars estranged brother-in-law in 2008.
Jackson also stood with the loved ones of Rekia Boyd, a woman who was allegedly shot to death by an off-duty Chicago Police officer in March, and Stephon Watts, an autistic 15-year-old boy who was allegedly killed by police in his south suburban home after the boys father called for help in February.
Tracy Martin turned to Watts father on Saturday to offer advice in dealing with the loss: From father to father, I feel your pain. I know that, Martin said. ...Continue to have faith and just lean on your better half. And if you have doubt, lean on God.
Apparently mamma and poppa haven’t seen the street fighting videos. How dare they!!
Now that the new zoomed in photos of Zimmermans wounds have been released..it might be a little moire difficult to hide them with a logo:
Gun violence makes a lot of sense to somebody who is on their back getting an MMA-style beatdown with their head slamming the cement.
It’s like bizzaro world. I feel like I’m in a nightmare.
Go out and tell people like Trayvon to stay out of the faces of people who have a right to defend themselves against thugs then.
They were incapable of teaching this nonviolence to their son, why should we expect different results from other students?
Got to love how they are riding the gravy train on the back of their dead son from city-to-city one race bating event to another.
I was listening to Zimmermans 911 call again last night and it’s right there on the tape; When the dispatcher said “we don’t need you to do that” the heavy breathing and wind in Zimmermans phone stopped. He STOPPED following Traydmark.. And if that isn’t proof enough, he also says “Damn I lost him”then he is told to wait for the cops and the call ends.
That’s all on the FULL non-edited tape of Zimmermans 911 call that maybe Traymarks parents should listen to.
are they promoting good parenting while they’re at it?
Dear Ms. Fulton,
Your drug addicted violent thug son is still trying to deprive an innocent law abiding citizen of his rights even after his justified death at the hands of said citizen.
Why don’t you and your offspring knock it off?
I don’t feel sorry for him, and I don’t feel sorry for you.
Go away.
A wrong and dangerous message is being sent here.
Even if Zimmerman profiled and hunted down Trayvon like a dog and executed him, the overwhelming threat against young blacks is not the evil racist white, but other young blacks.
Like my daddy always said, “Never bring Skittles to a gunfight!”
I hope Zim sues their effin lib ass off.
And that is where it starts. He wanted look like a hoodlum; a tough guy, a threat, a Menace To Society.
And he got what he wanted. Some guy half his size thought Trayvon was a hoodlum, a tough guy, a threat, a Menace to Society. And so he shot him.
Trayvon probably would have been better off wishing that somebody would give him a pony.
I have a question maybe some here can answer. It has been reported that he was talking to the girl and that she heard the initial words between Martin and Zimmerman. If he was using a ear device for his phone, how did she hear this because when he was looked over after the shooting, the ear device was in his pocket ?
He's never told to wait. He was asked if he wanted to meet with the responding officer, and he said he wanted to, so the next point was to arrange a meeting location. That was left up in the air, with a request that the responding officer call Zimmerman on Zimmerman's cellphone.
But I do agree that it appears he broke off looking for Martin. A reasonable person would assume a suspicious person that runs is aiming to elude observation, and that is well accomplished by getting farther away.
We don't know, but Martin could have been on the phone without the ear device. Martin's phone was found loose in the grass. He might have pitched it or lost it when or just before he started throwing punches.
