Radioactive fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster continues to show up at dangerously high levels in the city of Tokyo, which is located roughly 200 miles from the actual disaster site. According to an analysis of five random soil samples recently taken by nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen, the soil around Tokyo is so contaminated with Fukushima radiation that it would be considered nuclear waste here in the U.S.
During a recent trip to Tokyo, Gundersen collected soil samples from a sidewalk, a children's playground, a rooftop, a patch of moss by the side of a road, and the lawn of a judicial building. After sending those samples in for testing, it was revealed that each one had high levels of radioactive cesium-134 (CS134) and cesium-137 (CS137), while three of the samples contained high levels of cobalt-60 (CO60). One of the samples also tested positive for uranium-235 (U235).
"[W]hen I was in Tokyo, I took some samples [...] and sent them to the lab," said Gundersen in a recent video report. "And the lab determined that all of them would be qualified as radioactive waste here in the United States and would have to be shipped to Texas to be disposed of."

Despite the fact that radioactive plumes from Fukushima have largely drifted seaward based on wind patterns, a considerable amount of this radiation traveled southward towards Tokyo and elsewhere. The findings also confirm the reality that Fukushima radiation has likely had significant global spread as well, which confirms earlier reports of samples taken on the U.S. West Coast

Does this mean that the damage is more horrible than thought? Or does it mean that what nuclear waste standards in U.S are silly?

Heads up if you are under the Jet Stream in the US (see article below). High radioactivity levels coming straight from Japan over the US right now. They are monitoring the fallout. If it is raining in these Jet Stream areas, stay out of the rain. It is contaminated. High radioactivity detected over Colorado last night. Should be over St. Louis tonight.
!MAXIMUM ALERT! Unusual Jet Stream Radioactivity Detected

Cesium does not accumulate in the body and so its radioisotopes are not really an environmental hazard. I’d be less than alarmist over this report. I’d compare the U.S. vs Japanese health standards. If Tokyo was considered a health hazard, the U.S. Embassy would have already evacuated its staff and dependents and issued a travellers alert.

And yet, Nakasaki and Hiroshima were repopulated in a fairly short amount of time after 1945.

Um...no. There's a huge difference between detectible radiation, above background radiation, and high radiation levels. Just because someone is detecting higher than normal background radiation levels does not mean they are detecting 'High' radiation levels. It is often the case at some nuc plants that radiation alarms can be set off by changes in naturally occurring background radiation from outside the plant.
BTW...heavier radioactive elements, such as U-235, from Fukushima are just that...heavy...they are too heavy to make it up to the jet stream.
Also...anything that does make it that far up into the atmosphere will be so diluted and spread apart by the time it transits the ocean so as to pose almost no significant exposure threat downstream.
Calm down...take a deep breath...far more people will die of the stress caused by over-hype than will ever die of exposure to contamination from Fukushima.

Are you aware they sent military dependants back to the USA....a long time ago? Hmmm....

The main reason military dependents were evacuated was because of the immense destruction caused by the tsunami. There was an immediate crunch on supplies and support, and given the logistical problems with providing for basic needs, it was just smart to evacuate as many non-essential people as possible.

So we should just ignore all high readings ? That would be stupid considering we have 3 completely melted reactors and 4 spent fuel pools with problems located up stream from the readings.
To: Big Horn
At the link at #9, the alarmists found Cs-137 in beef at levels 2,000 times less than European limits for baby food. I’d be more worried about radiation from flying in an airplane at 36,000 feet for hours or that you get as a frequent flier from the new TSA full body scanners.
