Society as we know it will break down and collapse in a five stage process outlined here. While it can be accelerated by certain events like war, a natural disaster, pandemic, terrorist attack, or even an impending asteroid impact, history has shown that economic collapse will essentially happen in this five stage process. To survive the collapse, it is important to read and interpret the signs and understand what assets are important to the current situation so you can be prepared for the worst thereby allowing you to survive intact and with as little damage as possible.

For dealing with residual radiation, two things are important: Iodine, and lots of concentrated green tea (in refer). Kelp tablets are a good source of iodine, as is SSKI.
If you have lots of grassland, sheep are excellent. Grass-fed lamb is the healthiest food on earth.
>> “Sardines I can see, but sauerkraut?” <<
.
Real, unpasteurized sauerkraut is an outstanding food for maintaining your health. You can also make it with beets, broccoli, or cauliflower. If its been heated though, it is worthless.
Be careful with those so-called emergency food supplies. Most of them have soy in them and will have your intestines inflamed in short order.
Buy your kraut in glass jars, and be sure that it is not pasteurized. If it has been heated, it has no value whatsoever.
There is a coating for cans that is completely benign. It is a white plastic, and you may have seen it if you buy Friskies cat food (yes, they care about the cats, but not about humans)
“Approximately”, where are you located?
Thanks.
I didn't know that.
If it’s stored at room temperature, doesn’t everything in a can or jar have “heating” in its past?
I was speaking of sauerkraut.
The value of sauerkraut is the live organisms therein. Heating kills them.
Fermented vegetables keep for years, as long as they are not stored in a warm place.
Have you ever bought Bragg’s raw apple cider vinager? it keeps in its sealed jars indefinitely as long as they are not in sunlight or heated. Its good to wrap the jars in foil to keep them absolutely dark; same thing for olive oil too.
I know you were speaking of sauerkraut; what you are saying suggests any sauerkraut bought in a can or a jar at a store has no living organisms therein.
The kraut that is in cans has definitely been heated to boiling, and is biologically sterile.
The kraut in jars is usually not pasteurized, but just cold filtered, just like beer. That is the good stuff that strengthens your resistance to disease.
Thanks for that info. I’d have only about a half acres of pasture, but I’d only be keeping a few sheep, until I learned more about them (and if there’s space enough to properly tend them), at least!
The flock we have now is of Rhode Island Reds. They don’t lay many eggs, unfortunately. I think they may be old. We got them as adults, but have kept them around because they were given to us, free, and have thus been able to help us learn a lot. These ones came from living conditions that were probably traumatic to them, and over crowded, and now they’re big and happy. Dunno if they’ll ever lay any more eggs. The first week we had them (there are 9) they laid about 10 eggs. In the next 8 months, they’ve laid 4 more or so. But, now we know how they act, how much they’ll eat, etc., etc. So when we get to the new place, they’ll just kinda be pers and be allowed to sorta free range (since we won’t be hunting for eggs anyway).
Thanks for all the advice!
Sauerkraut is a fermented food. It is good for the stomach to have fermented foods.
We buy ours in glass.
I’d almost agree, but when you have an entire city burning for at least a week or more (remember, firefighting is pretty much out of the question!)—and there are potentially hundreds of these fires going on after a relatively small nuclear exchange....
Second, prioritize needed supplies.
Third, each time you shop pick up $20-$30 worth of supplies.
Forth, find like minded folks and form a group - quietly.
Cherry & Donnafrflorida, IMHO you have time so please don't despair.
I see war breaking out in the ME this spring. The muslim in the WH will not get us involved.
Barring the unforeseen, I see the event horizon around the October time frame. By event horizon, I mean total economic collapse.

Thank you. I wad thinking my drop dead date is Nov 6 2012. But who knows. I never believed the 2008 economic meltdown was unplanned and deliberate. Oct 2012 probably will be the EMERGENCY THE WH has been waiting for.
