Rasmussen: Newt Pulling Away Nationally
Reaganite Republican ^ | January 24, 2012 | Reaganite Republican

Gingrich 35%    Romney 28    Santorum 16    Paul 10

Well, that happened quite a bit quicker than I expected- Newt out 7 points on Mittens nationally.  If you missed it, Gallup already had the Former House Speaker hypothetically in a statistical dead-heat with Obama, too... maybe he's 'electable' after all, eh.

And another thing you hear from the other side is stuff about Newt’s considerable ego and ‘megalomaniac’, etc.

Well, consider this: the ball is REALLY teed up for any who’d like to be a conservative hero of all time… think about it. The opportunity is right there, and NOW: Newt said he’s going to institute a Reagan-Laffer-Kemp agenda… right?

Pulling the country out of the steep descent of the bizarre and destructive Obama era could make Newt the man of history his ego has long craved… and he’s surely smart enough to smell the opportunity. He's actually so strident in his conservative rhetoric, you could say he's pretty much painted himself into a corner.

That shining city on a hill is a pretty powerful motivator for him to stick to his Reaganite platform… the ego is far from a negative imho, now that he’s so obviously matured: on the contrary, could drive him on to success... and this one knows just how to do it.

If Newt Gingrich has wandered in his thinking out loud, so be it- I don’t think there’s any gain for him personally in morphing to RINO in office… think about it that way. His economic agenda was enthusiastically endorsed by Art Laffer- that ought to count for something.

If Newt wins Florida, the Rinocrat Party is going to have kittens.

Hold on, I have heard over and over how Rasmussen was a shill for the Establishment/Romney/Media/Obama/ etc.

How can Rasmussen suddenly now be telling the truth?

;-) (Not directed at you, Reaganite!)

I really REALLY hope that happens. I can't wait to see what the kittens and mittens will attempt to do then, and they WILL attempt something dastardly and underhandedly.

Really funny you mention that, RD

I felt Rasmussen was in bed with the Drudge-Coulter-Krauthammer axis... but unlike the rest, seems tethered to reality by the undeniable numbers his polls are presenting

Drudge Report doesn’t find this newsworthy. FL poll either.

I would never have believed it. I wondered why he was wasting his money and torturing himself by running, especially in the beginning.

Today, at work, I talked to 2 women, one a Republican and the other a Democrat. They both watched the debate and they both thought Gingrich won and that Romney was a Jackass. The Democrat was upset that it was all about personal things and not what they’d do if they were elected to improve our country.

I like West. He might be a good VP for Newt. He might even be a great VP for Newt.

I fear that the RINO establishment will execute a scorched earth policy, where they would destroy the party's chances in the general election rather than risk losing power. Their philosophy may be "Better to reign the GOP under Obama, than serve under Newt".

West stumbled on a few issues early on, but he might be trying to right himself now........We'll see.

Posted elsewhere on FR is Jay Nordlinger's blow-by-blow reaction to the Tampa debate, and it seems fair and unbiased, unlike the supposedly "fair and balanced" bias being aired on TV.

This national poll may reflect a similar reaction.

Surely, the State that sent Rubio to the Senate, West to the House, and Scott to the Governor's Office, how could the voters consider a man who, when presented the opportunity to tell what he had done on behalf of the "conservative" movement, offered up an explanation that he had a family and worked, with a few more mentions of himself?

Brian Williams and NBC set it up for Romney by banning applause, knowing full well that applause lines would go to Gingrich, which, in turn, would show him to be the more exciting candidate.

Williams also set Romney up for a possible great finish by encouraging him to provide his interpretation of "conservatism" by explaining what he had done on its behalf.

In America, over the past few decades, there are shining examples of business leaders who, perceiving threats to free enterprise principles by their government, made bold efforts to warn their fellow citizens and to "conserve" (preserve) founding principles.

For instance, one such business leader in Illinois named James R. Evans wrote a book of warning way back in the 80's. Another business leader in North Carolina, W. D. Stedman, spent years investing dollars and efforts in a free enterprise education program and related national programs intended to "preserve" (conserve) the ideas of liberty, including books, radio messages, speeches, etc. As part of that program he used excerpts from the Evans book, as follows:

"1. Does this legislation or idea increase, or decrease, individual freedom and creativity?

"2. Does this legislation or idea increase, or decrease, the power of some citizens over other citizens?

"3. Does this legislation or idea recognize that the persons who will exercise the power are themselves imperfect human beings?

"4. Does this legislation or idea recognize that government is incapable of creating wealth?

"5. Does this legislation or idea authorize taking from some what belongs to them, and giving it to others to whom it does not belong?
If 'thou shalt not steal' is a valid commandment, can we assume that it is meant to apply only to individuals and not to government (which is made up of individuals), even if those persons in power pass laws which sanction such redistribution of the wealth of others?'

"6. Does this legislation or idea encourage, or discourage, the very highest level of morality and responsibility from the individual?
. . .when government makes actions 'legal' by some citizens at the expense of other citizens, the result may be behavior which would not be considered possible by individuals acting alone.

"7. Does this legislation or idea propose that the 'government' do something which the individual cannot do without committing a crime?"**

**7 principles drawn from James R. Evans book, "America's Choice: Twilight's Last Gleaming or Dawn's Early Light" and reprinted in a Stedman Corporation (Asheboro, NC) booklet entitled "I'm Only One, What Can I Do?" Many others, across this nation, have made similar efforts in what is called the effort for "conservatism."

Now, the question is:

What was Mitt Romney doing on behalf of "conservatism" as a young business leader, and in the intervening years?

Just participating in the benefits of free enterprise does not qualify as an answer to how you've worked to preserve it!

I was originally supporting Sarah, and was very disappointed when she dropped out. But I thought, ok, trust God. Now I’m thinking that things may have worked out for the best.

Newt is an unrivalled spokesman for conservatism, with a track record of legislative accomplishment. If he has put his relationship issues behind him, it’s hard to imagine a better candidate.

I have never cared for or trusted the Ginch. I still don’t. Unfortunately, too many of the brainwashed masses sit up for the boney scraps the elite Establishment throws to us. The conservative hopefuls, such as Cain, Bachmann and Perry, are not allowed in the kitchen at all! Not even on Free Republic!

So much for those who settle for what will not serve us well.

Yes, he’s had a learning curve, but it can’t be easy making the transition from career military to politics. I wasn’t terribly keen on him in the beginning, but I’ve seen some growth and promise there lately.

After doing pretty well for a few cycles, Rass was a bit too heavily Dem weighted in recent ones. Also, it's one thing to push polls to make news, it's entirely another thing altogether to put your reputation on the line to predict actual outcomes.

That is, as long as the campaign was mostly a theoretical exercise, the wording and weighting can be tweaked to produce a desired result. As votes are getting ready to be cast, however, a pollster needing to keep his credibility needs to show something relatively close to the truth.
