ow that weve done our cheery Happy New Year greetings, its time to get more serious.
Im a boomer. In my lifetime, I cant remember a new year beginning with such dire warnings and grim outlook.
This morning, the UKs The Telegraph reports that Americans bought record numbers of guns last month amid an apparent surge in popularity for weapons as Christmas presents.
Another UK paper, Daily Mail, is grimmer still. Dominic Sandbrook writes that a loss of faith in politicians and democracy could make 2012 the most frightening year in living memory. Sandbrook goes as far as to compare our time with the Great Depression:
For the most chilling parallel, though, we should look back exactly 80 years, to the cold wintry days when 1931 gave way to 1932
. It was in 1931 that the Great Depression really took hold in Europe, bringing governments to their knees and plunging tens of millions of people out of work. Then as now, the crisis had taken years to gather momentum. After the Wall Street Crash in 1929 just as after the banking crisis of 2008 some observers even thought that the worst was over. But in the summer of 1931, a wave of banking panics swept across central Europe.

Our Walmart never did get restocked on the canning supplies. We found some jars at a hardware store and a grocery store, but the rest I had to order on line.
I was going to order some more quart jars yesterday. However, the regular provider was out of stock and the others wanted at least 4 times more than the usual price.
So I just ordered a couple of cases at the regular price. They were also out of jelly jars which I use quite a lot, since hubby and I are the only ones here and it’s a good size for the 2 of us with no leftovers.
I also wanted to dehydrate some marshmallows for the grand kids and use the jelly jars for them. So I may just use mylar bags for those.
Actually, it’s my understanding that the aluminum shortage is actually a magnesium shortage, as magnesium is need as an alloy to make aluminum rigid.
Consider how stiff aluminum foil and beverage cans are.
That is pretty much it. I did some where I filled the jar with the broth and some where I only had a little bit of broth. I like the ones without the broth better. I only seared each side of the patty before putting them in the jar, and I usually got 4 patties in a jar.
When I prepared them, I found that the ones with broth worked pretty good for sausage gravy for biscuits and gravy.
The patties I would put in a skillet of fat and brown them some more to serve with eggs, or to make a sausage biscuit sandwich.
At any rate, I always cook any home canned foods at a simmer for about 10 minutes - just a precaution.
If there’s an Ace Hardware anywhere near you they seem to be fairly good at getting canning lids.
Thanks -No Ace Hardware here. We have a true value, and they used to have them when no one else did — every single store that carries them was out this year.
Hubby ran across some at a job in a nearby town and brought them home, but hasn’t had any luck lately.
We ordered some side panels from a Menards store in a nearby town, about 2 months ago. Half the order came in, and the rest is still back ordered.
I have a car that needs a new ignition switch, and that’s been waiting over 6 months. Can’t even find it in the junk yards.
I’ll have to mention Ace Hardware to hubby next time he goes over to the leadbelt for a job. We have lots of farms and people do a lot of canning around here and I’d bet they all stepped it up this year - just as we did.

I always read your links to prepper information though I rarely comment. I click to the article and noted wordpress had pulled it as having a violation of their community standards. Hmmm..? I posted to Kartographer to let him / her know.
Now, I’m reading the thread and I find a comment by JRandomFreeper, (I miss that dude) and my puny mind boggles up. I finally realize, 2012! I’m going to add more coffee to my stores!
This summer the local Runnings had pallets of canning jars.
I kept buying the wide mouth quarts so now have some extra cases I intend to use to pressure can more meat.
The lids that i find on occasion are so stinking expensive that now buying a case of jars is pretty cost effective. when you deduct out the $6.99 for a box of lids with bands, or $3.99 for the lids alone.
I always cook down the carcass and make turkey stock.
I just can up the meat and broth and add the veggies later. I don’t like how the veggies can up and since onions and carrots store so well, it’s not a problem adding them for the soup to be fresh.
Also - suggest stocking up on Lactaid tablets if you are lactose intolerant and plan to use dried milk you have stored!
Truth!
I did the same thing, with landscape exterior lights! Have a large box full, set aside, in the garage.
“...the bad guys will be unable to get bullets in a short time, while you have thousands. Nuff said on that. And the report does not carry far, giving away your position, and all members of the family can use it.”
Excellent advice. My weapons are all .22s; Beau has the bigger firepower; I’m just backup/cover fire and ‘small game plinker.’ ;)
When he saw how much ammo I owned, he proposed immediately, LOL!

This is my favorite bread recipe. I just baked some this morning and the young men hunting here for the weekend ate it all up! You do need a heavy Dutch Oven with lid, though. Super simple. Tip: Place the dough on a sheet of parchment paper, THEN put it into the pre-heated pot when it’s time. No clean up!

Anything canned will keep for years, if kept from freezing.
Cheaper than Berkey and made in the US.
(2) 5 gallon, food grade buckets from the bakery (free) and a $5 spigot from Ebay and I'm good.
Was in my local Tractor Supply this morning, and noticed they have a “10 bags per customer” limit on wood pellets for stoves.
I thought those things commonly sold by the pallet.
And it’s only October.
“ Gold is an “investment” for tough economic times, NOT mayhem and disorder.”
—————
My grandfather escaped from Russia at the tail end of their revolution because of the gold coins that were sewn into the lining of his jacket by his aunt. Those were definitely times of mayhem and disorder, but the border guards and other people with whom my grandfather dealt knew that the gold was valuable. They also had a certain degree of honor in taking only a certain amount, and not killing or arresting him once they got the gold.
While there is no such thing as a guarantee, I would be willing to bet that having a variety of different sized gold coins, along with silver, would be very valuable in future times of mayhem l and disorder.
