Are We The People, you, me each of us is responsible for the sad state of our government

“Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…. If the next centennial does not find us a great nation … it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.” James Garfield, the twentieth president of the United States, 1877.

I have received some antagonistic denials and other “blow-back” from my recent statements regarding the “Silent Majority” of the early 70′s, and today’s T.E.A. Party.

I believe the problems of times preceding the “awakening” of both of these groups were caused by those groups.

I believe the past abominable voting percentages in this country, in both times, represent the apathy and ignorance, the pure selfishness of these groups, who, for some reason, are celebrated as heroes, (when they finally stand and do their civic duty clean up the mess their negligence caused!).

A Gallup poll, shows: that progressive liberals, (enemies of freedom and American capitalism), represent less than 25% of the voting population that Conservatives represent 40% that Moderates represent 35%.

Yet, because of the failure of the everyday citizen to vote, to simply pay attention to what is going on, their failure to inform themselves until THEIR OWN ox was gored, (generally representing the Government reaching in to steal more of their money than usual), we get a liberal majority in Congress and local elections.

These people didn’t care while the situation only affected others, or stole others money or property...

Complaining doesn't change as much as taking responsibility and acting to make America better.

I’ve actually said this since the beginning of W’s second term: In a democracy you not only get the government you want. You get the government you deserve.

The problem with Obama is not obama. It is the electorate that elected him. And no matter what happens to him, that ignorant electorate is still there, waiting to do incomparable damage to this country. Meanwhile, they know who’s on top in Dancing With the Stars.

“The real danger to America was never Barack Obama, it was an electorate so dumbed-down it was capable of ELECTING a man like Obama to the Presidency.” - Vaclev Havel

To Quote the most famous anonymous Internet post (rumored to come from a Czech newspaper)

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president.

The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him president.”

Any form of government will work, or will NOT work, depending upon one thing .... the character of the people being governed. The fact that we are over fifteen trillion dollars in debt and have a permanent political class which is corrupt up to its eyeballs speaks volumes about our character, but says nothing about our form of government.

It’s not just a failure to vote, just wading into a primaries thread will show plenty of Freepers (supposedly among the most conservative voters) proposing excuse after excuse for supporting one terrible candidate or other. It’s not that we just accept the worst of the worst via apathy and failure to engage, it’s that sometimes we actively support them, even when we know better.

We’ve created z culture where thd only venue for important, detailed discussion is with people who already agree with you. It’s impossible to debate important issues with others without violating thd PC rules of civility. If one tries to explain why collectivism, statism, socialism or whatever one wants to call it, can’t work. One is considered rude and argumentative. As a result, we live with people who amount to about half the population eho cannot understand that the economy actually depends upon productive work and prudent risk-taking. They think we can legislate prosperity by fiat without anyone actually having to do anything. Our country is in peril because 50% of the grown-ups believe in the tooth fairy.
