Newt Gingrich, whose campaign for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination has gotten off to a rocky start, risked fresh controversy on Thursday by suggesting that some illegal immigrants living in the United States "may have earned the right to become legal." (Original excerpt from Reuters)

I work with a gal who was brought over by her parents about 35 years ago as an infant. Where’s she supposed to return to?

If she can prove it I’m all for giving her a green card. If she has an SSN she is an ID thief and needs to go to jail.

And IF the border is finally secured, the immigration process is updated so physicists educated here can get citizenship in under 30 years, and we have a working Work Visa program for farm labor....well, then I can see there would be a path to citizenship ( ie, “temporary work visas” )for SOME of the millions of illegal immigrants..

My basis for that:
1) We are not going to deport millions of people
2) We defacto “encouraged” illegal immigration for decades..even under St. Reagan.

I think their needs to be room for temporary work permits. Have them renewable every 4 months, easily denied if the person is charged with any semi-serious criminal charges and hard to get.

I don’t think the name of the game is to never allow non-Americans to become citizens, but it should be something they definitely have work for, prove they value the citizenship, and that they will fit in with the fabric of the country.

The problem here is that undue concern is given to such cases that it creates a loophole that effectively nullifies the law, because it is saying that if you can sneak around long enough, you don’t have to go home.

What Americans should be saying, in this case, is that if you don’t follow the law of the land in regards to becoming citizens, you will be sent back when you are arrested.

No exceptions.

That’s not an anti-immigrant position, because you are not denying those anchor babies the possibility of citizenship, but forcing them to comply with the law of the land in this regard.

A lot of people seem to be hoping that Newt will surge to the front with all the controversy surrounding some of the other candidates. But he will disappoint people with his stance on illegal immigration. He’s a panderer on this issue and then there’s that photo with Pelosi on the couch and his dalliance with the global warming nonsense.

I agree. Once Gingrich gets closer to the spotlight, he will face very intense scrutiny, and likely be exposed as a flip-flopper.

It is difficult to understand how a generally staunch conservative can go so completely wonky on this single subject. I like Newt...but this immigration stance is wholly unacceptable, for me.
Taking this ‘compassionate, pragmatic’ approach is much too close to the moral relativism that drives the libtards, and that would keep me from voting for him.

I can’t believe what I just read! The description of what that Cain did to that poor woman made my blood boil. To think that he even has a chance now after what we know. To think that he might be doing this stuff to his sweat wife Gloria. OMG! I can’t bear to imagine what he could be doing; making her cook dinner and washing his socks and all that! Good night!

I’m going to have to jump into the hot tub and cleanse myself. Maybe even have my wife join me and scrub my back!

The sins of the fathers are visited on the children.

She can go back to where she was born, after serving time for either the fake SSN she has been using, or for tax evasion. If she ever voted, that’s another one.

I thought Gingrich was supposed to be smart.

For him to spill this, there must have been a hot, young, bleach blond in his sight!

Now we have LaRaza Rick and El Norte Newt.....
