(VIDEO AT LINK)

While addressing college students in Richmond, VA, President Obama was surprised to learn that schools use trailers, also called 'modular buildings' or 'modular classrooms.' During his visit Obama said he was approached by an educator who mentioned she teaches in a trailer. Obama did not mention that the teacher had a problem with her situation, but he made it clear this was unacceptable.

"I just -- in the back, I was taking some photos with folks who had helped out to organize this event, and there was a young lady who is a teacher. And she said, “I heard your speech last night. I really appreciate it. I’m teaching eighth grade English, and I teach in a trailer.” We shouldn’t have people teaching in trailers. We shouldn’t have kids learning in trailers. They should have classrooms with Internet and science labs," President Obama said to the college crowd.

The practice of using trailers is quite common at public schools and more often than not the accommodations in the modular buildings are better than classrooms inside the the main building....

Wasn't Mr. Obama's only "real" job a stint with admitted terrorist Bill Ayers (the Chicago Annenberg Challenge) working on "education reform" in Chicago? How do you work for years in this field and not know anything about public schools? I'm 51 years old and have attended elementary school classes in a modular building or trailer, so this isn't a new thing! Has this guy EVER done anything in the real world?!

Are you implying that Hussein is ‘out of touch’ with reality in America?!

Wow...how out of touch. We had portable classrooms since at LEAST the early 70’s in our school district. Alas...no internet or computers but somehow we managed.

I guess his children doesn’t have to worry about that at their $60,000 per year private school.

Perhaps we ought to check to see if he recognizes the optical scanner in the supermarket or knows what the price of a gallon of milk is?

The real question is, “Will the left wing media use this to spread the idea that Obama is out of touch with everyday living like they did when they showed George H W Buch fascinated by a supermarket checkout line scanner?”

And we all know that will never happen in a million years.

The media will not allow this to rise to the level of George HW Bush and his run-in with a laser scanner at a grocery store exhibition.

Obama knows nothing about the real USA or the real American people, and has no interest in learning.

We shouldn’t have people teaching in trailers. We shouldn’t have kids learning in trailers.

Maybe the next step is to ensure nobody has to stoop so low as to actually live in a trailer....Putting a few million people out of their homes would be a small price to pay to keep them from this inhumane situation...

1969 our Jr. high school had 6 modular classrooms. It didn’t make one bit of difference in my education. Obama went to private schools, so he wouldn’t know about these things. He is just using it as an excuse to spend more money.....

I went to school in a Quonset hut for a year, and so did lots of people who were Navy brats. They are turned out just fine.

It’s not the building that educates kids, it’s what goes on inside.

We had them when I was in school 25 years ago.

Half of my daughter’s little high school was nothing but trailers. Last year they finally finished the new high school and tore the trailers out.

What kind of a rock is this guy living under? And why are trailers a bad thing? Some of them are very nice. they have heat and AC. Some of them have bathrooms and an office for the teacher. All the equipment is there.

how is this a problem? Because the little darlings have to walk (gasp!) OUTSIDE to get from place to place?

Or is he such and elitist ******* that the word ‘trailer’ connotes poverty and ‘those people’?

(I *LIVE* in a trailer. Because of that we’ve been able to pay off $80,000 in debt, pay cash for a classic car as a gift for my husband, put my daughter through college, buy her and my son nice [used] cars, buy my dream car [used] and start saving for our custom dream house. All while feeding and supporting a family for four on one paycheck. If we’d bought a nice house, we wouldn’t be here.)

i live in the area and the reason there are trailers is it is actually a rule that they can only build schools to fit the current population and make no growth projections.....there were trailers at my kids new 65 million dollar high school the first year it was open coz the population grew while it was being built.................more govt planning gone awry

They had what they called demountable classrooms at Langley High School in Pittsburgh 40 years ago when I was in school. They were no less equipped than the classrooms in the main building.

I’m not suprised that everyone doesn’t know that this is how a lot of school districts have addressed the need for additional classroom space over the decades, but its baffling that the president wouldn’t check the facts before spouting off about it.

Aye, our school had some in the 70’s and for whatever reason they stayed cooler than the main building, so I liked it when I had a class out there.

It was usually only for a couple of years, until a new school was built. The new schools always sucked, that was when we were split up from friends and such. :(

Computers and Internet are prerequisite for NOT learning anything except for computer sciences. IOW, teaching children how to use a computer, is like teaching my dog to bark.
