In Friday’s Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan takes a look at President Obama’s Martha's Vineyard vacation and speculates on his thoughts in view of declining poll numbers, and disillusionment among his supporters.
"How could he not be depressed? He has made big mistakes since the beginning of his presidency and has been pounded since the beginning of his presidency. He's got to be full of doubts at this point about what to do. His baseline political assumptions have proved incorrect, his calculations have turned out to be erroneous, his big decisions have turned to dust...."
"Nothing worked! And nothing's going to work. He's the smartest guy in the room, but he's got the reverse Midas touch. Everything he touches turns to—well, unsatisfying outcomes."
But the article is more than failures and vacations. It questions whether Obama should continue to seek a second term. Indeed the subhead of the op-ed is, “Is his visit to Martha's Vineyard a sign that he's giving up?” She concludes her article with an ominous series of statements which are in reality questions for Obama to answer....

Are you kidding me? Noonan has absolutely no credibility writing about Zero, having swooned over him in 2008 and deriding those people who saw right through his charade.
She would be at least somewhat credible if she admitted she screwed up royally in endorsing Obama. Here, as in most of her recent articles, she acts like she just got back from Mars and had no knowledge of Obama.

This sentence which you have cited tells us so much about Peggy Noonan.
The high point of her career was speechwriting for one of the best speech makers of all time, Ronald Reagan, and she narcissistically believes that the sine qua non of a great public leader is the quality of the speeches he renders. That is one of the reasons that she despises Sarah Palin, because she believes Sarah Palin's rustic delivery ad lib betrays a shallowness of intelligence.
Obama is not highly intelligent, he is a wordsmith who has simply mastered the art, chameleonlike, of rendering the tone and cadence that his audience wants. That is not a sign of intelligence beyond the ability to read the audience and play act.
Peggy should be far more concerned about what the man's biography, associations, and actions demonstrate about his character than what speech patterns illuminate about his intelligence. That goes for Sarah Palin too.
Peggy: the ability to make a speech is not necessarily an indicator of intelligence; character rather than intelligence is a cardinal prerequisite for president of the United States.
