We Have No Reason To Celebrate
vanity | 7/02/11 | Alan Levy

I think the United States of America should no longer celebrate the Fourth of July.

Yes, I said it. I'm not taking it back. The United States of America should no longer celebrate the Fourth of July.

The Fourth of July is a celebration of Freedom. The Fourth of July is a celebration of Limited Government. The Fourth of July is a celebration of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It's a time to celebrate Independence from foreign powers. It's the time to reflect on what makes America American.

Well, since none of these values are apparent in today's society, I think we should just turn the Fourth of July into the fourth of July. We should forget about the hamburgers and the fireworks. We should forget about the block parties and taking the day off from work. It might as well be another day since America is becoming just another place, thanks to the Authoritarian Left.

We have the federal "government" making ordinary citizens jump through hoops to buy a gun to defend their families, while allowing gun purchases to be made by Mexican drug lords without hassle. We have a federal "government" that wants to ORDER you to buy health insurance. We have a federal "government" that wants to decide what lightbulbs you should use. We have a federal "government" that wants to decide how much water your toilet uses after you take a Democrat. We have a federal "government" that thinks groping children, nuns, and elderly leukemia patients is vital to national security. We have a federal "government" that allows rogue agencies like the EPA to make rules and regulations that carry the same weight as laws. We have a federal "government" that has frittered away our sovereignty with its incomprehensible debt. We have a federal "government" that allowed itself to be ordered by the UN, EU, and Arab League to go to war to make sure al-Qaeda takes over Libya. We have a federal "government" that thinks it has the right to decide that your neighbor deserves some of your paycheck more than you do. If I go any further, I think I might off myself. (Safety first!)

Call me crazy and off meds, but I don't think any of the above should be celebrated. It would be an exercise in Orwellian parody to do so.

Folks, the only way to reverse this trend is by electing Conservatives. Moderates won't get the job done. Cooperation with the Authoritarian Left won't get it done. The only thing that will save the Republic is a return to its Constitutional, Judeo-Christian, and Rugged Individualist values. We need to elect individuals who will stand up to the bougerois socialists in the media and in Hollywood with an extended middle finger. What we need is individuals who live and breathe the Constitution, not fingersniffers who believe in a "living and breathing" Constitution. In other words, we need the exact opposite of what we have now.

God help us all.

I refuse to endorse such drivel. I see the Tea Party, I see grass roots rising up and taking charge. This toothless gloomy gus isn’t worth the electrons being killed here to comment about.

“No. I celebrate Independence Day for the same reason I go to church: to be reminded of what I am supposed to be.”

This is the response I was looking for. Thank you.

Because look at my 23 year old daughter in Iraq This is why we are free. Do you want to be ruled by sharia law?

That is 100% true— and one of the reasons why I wrote what I wrote.

Yes, we are free because of your daughter. God bless her for her service.

The point that I am making is that we are on the edge of complete and total disaster. We have an out of control federal “government” that is turning the country into a police state.

Statement: We Have No Reason To Celebrate

Response: This statement is not true. We have many reasons to celebrate: Tolerance, Egalitarianism, debate, discussion inclusion, room at the table, a big tent and "The Divine One" as President with Reverend Wright as his spiritual mentor.

“I see the Tea Party, I see grass roots rising up and taking charge.”

Well, where’s the attempt to dismantle the EPA ? The Department of Energy ? The Department of Education ? Where’s the effort to dismantle BATFE ? Why haven’t any of the politicians we all worked so hard to see elected said to Chairman Obama “Fine. You want the debt limit raised ? We want Obamacare gone in return” ?

“I refuse to accept that. I want and demand that the federal “government” abides by the Constitution. Nothing more and nothing less.”

It’s not an either/or proposition.

I will continue to agitate/vote/participate for constitutional government.

But in the meantime I can still celebrate living in the most free nation on earth.

Thanks to your dad. My dad enlisted at 17, lied, but it was 1945. He was too late. He’s 82 now, and you know his biggest regret is being born in 1929. He feels like he should have been there, but was robbed. His brother, my Uncle was there, got TB in the Philippians. My dad was on the sidelines. How hard was it for those guys, just barely unable to fight for the cause. Our family has always been a day late and a dollar short. We are not ‘boomers’, but, we’re labeled as such. Hippies, LOL! I was into disco, thought a rock concert was people throwing rocks. I’m a tweener. Not an Xer, not a boomer, I’m a brady bunch person.

How on earth is calling for limited government trolling on FR ?

“Who in the he// do you think are holding the republicans feet to the fire, such an idiotic remark.”

I’m a voter and I’m a taxpayer. My allegience is to Republic, not the Republican party.

It’s scary, we’re all trying to figure out what’s going on. This is not American. Thanks for acknowledging my daughter’s service. Me and my adult kids realize your point and are trying to thwart it. It’s going go be a long hard battle, freedom will win.

Injecting a 'woe is us - no reason to celebrate the fourth' attitude. You post did nothing of the sort to encourage limited gov't - only when challenged do you change your spots.

I’m a voter and I’m a taxpayer. My allegience is to Republic, not the Republican party.

Fine - currently there is no 'republic' party in charge of the whitehouse or senate. Who ya gonna work through doofus? The janitors? And yes, the republican party is currently the most responsive to the Tea Party - that the reason most got elected to the house the last cycle.

So why don't you just go troll over at DU - they will appreciate your call not to celebrate the 4th.

You’re right. It is a crappy attitude. I wish my attitude wasn’t nececessary. I wish I could open a newspaper and not see further evidence that the “government” wasn’t expanding or taking away MORE of our freedom.

God help us all.

While many await the 2012 elections to get rid of obama, i see the problem differently. Obama is the symptom of the problem.
We get the government we deserve.

Believe me, I thought long and hard before I wrote this. And, I’ll admit, it makes me sound like a total jerk.

What is going on now is an utter nightmare. We have a government that is burrowing its way into everything.
