Splashy Sarah Palin Movie Premiere Shuts Out Hollywood; Turns Away Journalists
The Hollywood Reporter ^ | June 27, 2011 | Paul Bond

The director admits he didn't invite his "right-wing" friends such as Jon Voight and Dennis Miller, while the media scrambles for seats.

PELLA, IOWA -- Reporters from around the country that have descended upon tiny Pella, Iowa for the premiere of the Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated on Tuesday night were in for a rude awakening: So scarce are the tickets that there’s no room in the theater for journalists.

The town, in fact, has been filling up rapidly since Palin confirmed she’d attend the premiere with her husband, Todd. Police notified residents that the streets around the venue, the 111-year-old Pella Opera House, would be shut down beginning 13 hours prior to show time.

On Monday, organizers were still divvying up tickets to the massively oversubscribed event, and reporters – some who travelled more than 1,000 miles -- were given the word that they didn’t make the cut.

Organizers were scrambling Monday, though, trying to arrange a separate screening for journalists, but there were no guarantees given.

The Undefeated, from writer-director Steve Bannon, is one of two documentaries about the controversial former vice presidential candidate. The other – a less flattering look at Palin -- is an untitled film from Nick Broomfield that is seeking a distributor.

Bannon has opted for a low-key premiere – “the hard, worn bricks of the Pella Opera House is all the red carpet I need,” he said Monday – though road closures and media trucks have dictated otherwise. Bannon, a U.S. Navy veteran, also enlisted some retired Navy SEALs for security detail.

Most of the 340 tickets went to Iowans and some of the commentators featured in the film, like Tammy Bruce and Sonnie Johnson. The most controversial cast member – not including Palin herself – is Andrew Breitbart, who is expected to be a last-minute arrival on Tuesday.

“I didn’t invite all my right-wing Hollywood friends,” Bannon said. “Jon Voight, Dennis Miller, I’ll have a screening for those guys later. I’d actually like them to buy a ticket, but they’re so tight… And you can quote me on that,” he joked.”

Pella is a religiously and politically conservative town of 10,000 people that boasts three dozen churches. With those sensibilities in mind, and because the Palins will be in the audience, Bannon and company will screen the version of the film with the less offensive opening.

The Undefeated begins with celebrities – David Letterman, Matt Damon, Howard Stern, Madonna, Louis C.K. and others – thoroughly trashing Palin, though Tuesday’s audience will be treated to bleeps instead of the more hardcore profanity used by some of the entertainers. Either way, it’s an intense opening made all the more menacing by the choice of music and the inclusion of a Bible verse.

The premiere includes a barbecue for 1,000 guests – no media – where Palin intends on mingling, though it wasn’t determined yet whether she’d make any public remarks.

LMAO! This ploy is almaost as good as the Tea Party gig, where Palin spoke to about 20,000 people (of which Wife and I were two) at a remote gravel pit in the Nevada desert.

Is she setting 'a new standard in presidential campaigns' by meeting, We the People, and not “we the press?”

Yes, I believe Palin is doing just that, and because thus far she's been successful with how she is going about connecting with "We The People" we're seeing other candidates incorporating , if not outright copying, 'Palin standards'. Their difficulty, however, is they do not have the time to establish their own 'Style' so it comes off as a copycat of Palin.

Yes, a candidate can win without cow-towing to the media, because as we have clearly seen the media will be there nonetheless where the story is and what brings them ratings, regardless if or not a candidate co-operates with them.

We will certainly see the reality of this as the elections run their course.

“I don’t hate Palin. Why should I? I do hate the stupidity of some of her supporters, though.”

Understandable, I hate the stupidity of her ranting nitwit PDS ankle biting haters.

Nick Broomfield? Bleeeccchhh! Scumbag, Brit documentarian who has made some of the worst and most embarrassing docs I’ve ever seen. He has the camera on himself more than his subject so Sarah can rest assured no one will pay any attention to his hatchet job.

By all means ;) I figure it sums up the average PDS mentality pretty quickly. And considering some of the crap they come out with, accurately.

Dead on the money. This is exactly what candidates have forgotten and why the media wields ‘power’ over them it really doesn’t have. It has become twisted 180 deg. At their core, the media are little more than rats running around trying to feed off little scraps of information. If you feed the rats, you get more of them. If you make yourself/info scarce, they chase you for it.

Candidates, not the media really have the power for without them there’s no need FOR a media. (In this case, not in general)

Not previewing a film for critics is always a bad idea. That means it will open with no reviews in the papers that day and that’s an industry sign that the filmmakers don’t think much of their work.

Do you think not having Roger Ebert review the movie will hurt the box office sales of a positive movie on the conservative Governor Palin?

If she doesn’t, will you do the same?

>>No need on my part—I’m not the troll.<

As usual for you and yours, you conflate “refusal to worship” with “trolling.” Understandable. And, of course you place upon others conceptual sanctions which you will not accept. Also understandable.

“Being Prometheus is a thankless task.”

And yet, I can stand back and watch all of you enact Sisyphus. To my great mirth.

But it is always great to see all of you congregate with bumper-sicker speak and high fives. When you have removed all negative thoughts you have won... um, something.

There is NO topic you can’t fake with a little Google/Dogpile/Bing and what have you. I would NEVER go up against your ability to appear to repackage wikipedia as something that you “really know.” You have made it clear to all that you are the master at that.

I won’t even challenge you on your field of superiority.

Read my posts on this thread. I don't worship Palin; but I did refute your inaccurate talking points.

And the truth is out for anyone who reads the posts in context: you ignored them, since they were not the kind which would result in a flame-war (igniting and maintaining flame wars to disrupt a thread is one of the textbook definitions of a troll).

Understandable. And, of course you place upon others conceptual sanctions which you will not accept. Also understandable.

This is meaningless without examples. But I wasn't the one mistaking reductio ad absurdum for ad hominem; and ironically enough, doing so in the midst of an ad hominem. Your arguments have been personal, rather than logic-based (both at Sarah Palin and at other posters on the thread), despite your earlier offer to "FReepmail me if you need help."

“Being Prometheus is a thankless task.”

And yet, I can stand back and watch all of you enact Sisyphus. To my great mirth.

That sentence looks like you rummaged quickly in a Thesaurus for "Greek myths" and pulled up a name at random: there is nothing Sisyphean about Palin's candidacy (as one might argue there is for Bachmann, more's the pity), because Sarah does not keep "rolling to the bottom" : her popularity is waxing, not waning, for one thing, and the "gotcha" cries from the press are becoming laughable. As when even the historian contacted by NPR admitted that Sarah was right about what happened on the Paul Revere ride. Go read the transcript: she specifically did NOT say that Revere *set out* to warn the British, but that that's what had *happened*.

Did it ever occur to her detractors that she had just *finished* touring some of these sites and might have listened to the tour guides, or read up independently?

And for that matter, compare Bachmann's crowd at her announcement (about 200 people, of whom a goodly number were members of the press) to the estimated 1000 or so who showed up to meet Palin, who has not yet declared, to see a film which cost $1 million to make, produced by a skilled cinematographer without cost to her.

And how well she sucked the oxygen from both Bachmann and Obama just by attending.

Read this post for some fascninating insight into the choice of Pella for the premiere of The Undefeated in Iowa.

But it is always great to see all of you congregate with bumper-sicker speak and high fives. When you have removed all negative thoughts you have won... um, something.

That doesn't make sense, either. We're not "removing all negative thoughts" but getting rid of Romney / Rove / MSM-inspired talking points designed to dissuade her from entering the race, in order to make the road to the White House safe for another "*darn it*, we lost AGAIN with a RINO (this time with a Massachusetts liberal or a Texan who can be trivially associated with George Bush or with Racism against a black man)" so that the RINOs who have subverted the GOP can continue going to their tony cocktail parties and circle jerks on the B-list side of the Washington DC / Georgetown social circuit.

Cheers!
