GOVERNMENT EDGES CLOSER TO TOTAL CONTROL OF INTERNET WITH ANTI-PIRACY CENSORSHIP BILL
A Semi-News/Semi-Satire from AzConservative ^ | 27 May 2011 | John Semmens

Posted on 05/28/2011 10:38:15 AM PDT by John Semmens

With Senate passage of the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (PROTECT IP), the US government has moved a step closer to total control over the Internet. Under the Act, the government will be authorized to seize domains, block websites and censor search engines.

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) emphasized that “the bill is merely an extension of existing authority. It is not new censorship.” The extension was deemed necessary because “rogue websites can escape government control by locating outside the United States. This new law will counter this by allowing the government to block access to offshore websites.”

The bill is opposed by Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore) on the grounds that it imperils freedom of speech. “It is one thing to protect against copyright infringement through normal legal processes,” Wyden said. “Those who feel their intellectual property rights have been abused can sue for damages. This bill would allow for the seizure of people’s assets and livelihoods before a proper adjudication of the facts. It’s an invitation to tyranny.”

"..It is not new censorship..."

Yep, same old censorship. Might as well get a job at NSA to be able to check your e-mail.

I would seriously expect that Obama will wield dictatorial control over the Internet during the next election and especially if he is re-elected. Under a second Obama term the only source of uncensored news will be by shortwave radio from beyond the Obama curtain.

“the bill is merely an extension of existing authority. It is not new censorship.”

When “they” think it is neccessary to make a statement like that you can bet your butt that whatever they have said is opposite of the truth.

Internet control was one of many things discussed at the G-8 summit this week.

We have “too much freedom” with wide open, able to say what we please about anything, internet access.
“They” feel the need to control us.

I’m seeing late 1700’s France in our future.

Nice Chi-Com ring to that, John.

Hope it doesn’t pass the House, but unfortunately, pimping for the RIAA and controlling the Internet is usually bipartisan.

What is this bit about ‘extending’ existing law? To me Leahy has always been a snake in the grass politician. Presumably laws are passed to cover a situation without unduly restricting acceptable citizen acts. Leahy apparently believes there is no boundry for acceptable acts by citizens. And this guy gets elected from the part of the Nation that was gung-ho for individual rights and liberties when this Nation was founded. Somethings changed, at least in New England or maybe Leahy wants an old England USA.

This is another reason to put Ron Paul in the WH. He will terminate this stuff.

Rockefeller and Olympia Snow have in past both been pushing internet bills that favor Obama control.

“the bill is merely an extension of existing authority. It is not new censorship.”

Then why do you think it's necessary?
