Who Parents the Parents? San Fransisco Set to Ban Infant Circumcision
David Horowitz's NewsReal Blog ^ | April 27, 2011 | Walter Hudson

The practice of infant circumcision, which carries particular religious significance for Jews, may be outlawed later this year in San Fransisco. A ballot initiative is underway which would ask voters whether to prohibit the practice in November.

The proposed new law would make it a misdemeanor to circumcise a person before they are 18-years-old.

"We don't come at this from a religious angle," Lloyd Schofield told the San Francisco Examiner. "We feel this is a very harmful thing. Parents are guardians. They are not owners of children. It's a felony to tattoo a child."

The effort is being taken seriously in light of last year's ban of toys in McDonald's Happy Meals. That move was enacted by the San Fransisco Board of Supervisors and provoked even leftist commentator Jon Stewart to call the city a "nanny state."

How about it? Should parents be able to circumcise their children? May San Fransisco rightfully restrict the practice? Is Schofield correct when he says parents are only guardians, and "not owners of children?"

Whether parents should circumcise their children, or get them tattooed, or do any of a million other things is dependent upon the answer to another question. In general, whose business is it to make these kinds of decisions? Who tells you, as an adult, whether you can get circumcised, or tattooed, or have your ears pierced? You get to make those decisions, because you own yourself. No one gave you your life and your body. Therefore, no one has a claim over what you do with it.

We all agree, I hope, that children are a special case. They cannot be allowed to fully direct their own lives, because they lack the requisite competence...

It’s SF. What do you expect? They are already a laughing stock. It’s not like you can’t leave the city to get this stuff done.

Better yet, leave the city, period.

Emperor Hadrian tried to prohibit the practice of circumcision. It led to a bloody revolt in Judea. I suspect the Jews in San Fran won’t rise up.

If this passes then don’t expect sympathy or anything else when the big one hits.

Will the last hetero couple, who want to raise children, to leave San Francisco please...leave the lights on...stick the remainder with a big bill.

And San Franciscans wonder why the city is devoid of children.

The left will argue that if you allow circumcision for males, then you have to allow it for females under the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. The Muslim community will demand it in the continuing push for Sharia law to have a de facto legitimacy in the US.

The left will attack and dismiss the argument that female circumcision is a barbaric, horrific and debilitating mutilation and thus is different from male circumcision. But they will also use it to argue that outlawing all circumcision is the only way to ensure that female genital mutilation doesn’t have to be made legal under the US Constitution.

If the unborn child is a boy, will aborting him count as “circumcision” under the proposed San Francisco legislation?

Will they give abortion the same minimum age as getting male circumcision?

That is one procedure I would not want to go through at age 18.

I knew a coworker who claimed he was circumcised at age 18 after he enlisted in the Army. Supposedly all infantry during WWII had to be since they didn't know when the next bath or shower was going to take place once in combat. Don't know if this is still the case.

"We don't come at this from a religious angle," Lloyd Schofield told the San Francisco Examiner.

I guess that makes it OK to constitutionally deny religious freedom then?

Would the Muslim community do that? I thought female circumcision was a cultural practice common in North Africa areas dominated by Islam, but not a practice required by Islam.

This is San Francisco, so there is an easy way around this proposed law: if the cops bust in while you’re doing the circumcising, just tell them that it was a botched late-term abortion.

My dad fought in WW2 and he surely wasn’t circumcised. I don’t think that really came into vogue until after the war.
