The link to their tombstone is at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=65506739&PIpi=38897246
They are buried at Mr. Zion Cemetery at Maspeth, Queens County New York, USA
Also, their graves are in the Czernowitz Bukowinaer Lodge Society section. If anyone has any information on the Society I would also appreciate anything you could tell me about it.
I've been able to trace their passage to the US in 1900 (Abraham) and 1906 Freida with my Grandfather, two aunts and one uncle from Bucowina, Roumania but not further back then that; I hope something on their tombstone may provide a direction or a hint to go after.
Thank You!

Usually a Jewish lodge or society is named after the city or town that the members came from.
My family was in the Bobroisker Society, named after the Russian city of Bobroisk.
There are several Jewish historical societies and geneological societies online you can contact.
The spellings of city names may have changed, but stick with its core spelling when searching for information about it.
Also, you can check the U.S. Census records and Immigration record to see where they came from or were listed as coming from (on the both records).

Where are you? Still in the NYC area?
If you go to any conservative or orthodox synagogue, or any cheder or yeshiva, there will be someone who can read and translate the hebrew for you.

No, we’re in south Florida and do not know any Orthodox Rabbi’s down here.
Knowing the talents of Freepers and how many speak/read Hebrew I was hoping someone on here could help.

hosepipe, thanks for the link.
Brytani, don’t know what the top two letters refer to, but, the main part says:
Avraham Yehuda bar (son of) Dov
date of death in the month of Tishrei.
The last part are the inital letters for: May his soul be bound up in the bond of life. (Inscription on gravestone.)
The right side says: Freida bat (daughter of) Moshe Mendel
date of death - Simchat Torah

Hello. The panel on the left (for Abraham) reads as follows: the first line at the top (just under the semicircle) is פ'נ : this is an abbreviation which stands for פה נטמן which means "Here lies buried". The second line down reads: "Avraham Yehuda ben Reb Dov" which is his full Hebrew name. The third line starts with נ'פ which is an abbreviation for נפשו נפטר which means "His soul died," followed by the date in Hebrew according to the Jewish calendar. The fourth line down is תנצב"ה which is an abbreviation which stands for תהיה נשמתו צרורה בצרור החיים which means "May his soul be bound up in the bond of everlasting life". The next lines are in English. For Frieda's panel the top line is the same as for Avraham. The next line gives her name "Frieda" in Hebrew and says her father was named "Moshe Mendel". The next line, as for Avraham, gives the date on which she died according to the Jewish calendar: we read that this was the day on which the holiday of Simchat Torah occurred in 1953. The last line in Hebrew is the same as for Avraham, except that the abbreviation now refers to "her soul ..." rather than "his soul...".

The two letters at the top are the Pey-Nun abbreviation for “poh nitman” or “poh nikbar” which means “hear lies”....

Some of the Hebrew words are abbreviations, but here's at least a partial translation:
Here lies
Abraham Yehudah, son of the worthy Dov
Died . . . Tishri . . . (date of death)
May his soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life
Here lies
Frieda (Nathan/given?) Moshe Mendel
Died Simchat Torah . . . (date of death)
May her soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life

Interesting. I was particularly struck by this:
The third line starts with נ'פ which is an abbreviation for נפשו נפטר which means "His soul died," followed by the date in Hebrew according to the Jewish calendar.
As a Christian, I believe the soul to be immortal, and thought that the case in Judaism as well. Or is there a typo?
Either way, thanks for the education.
And חַג שָׂמֵחַ

Frieda (Nathan/given?) Moshe Mendel OK, now I see that those smaller letters after "Frieda" are the word "bat" and the letter "r," which means "daughter of the worthy." (I was having a hard time distinguishing the letter "b" from an "n" and the letter "r" from a final "n.")
To: ExGeeEye
No, it's not a typo. The first word, נפשו , which transliterates to "nafsho," means "his soul." (The word נפש, which transliterates to "nefesh," means "soul" or "spirit," and when modified in grammatical declension to "nafsho" means "his soul.")
To: ExGeeEye; leebee vmizrach
The Hebrew word nephesh can mean "soul" or "life." See, e.g., Genesis 2:7, where the Lord God breathes into man the breath of life and the man becomes a living "nephesh." When man breathes his last, his nephesh dies, in one sense. But note also the last line of the inscription, which is a prayer that the person's nephesh will be bound up into eternal life. That, btw, is a paraphrase from 1 Samuel 25:29.
To: Charles Henrickson
You wrote: "note also the last line of the inscription, which is a prayer that the person's nephesh will be bound up into eternal life." That is not correct: the word used in the (abbreviation given on) the last Hebrew line (נשמתו) refers to the "neshama," and not to the "nefesh."
To: Charles Henrickson
On second thought, since we only see the abbreviation תנצב"ה , the second letter could stand for either "nafsho" or "nishmato," plus you are correct regarding the reference to the book of Samuel, so you're probably right. I've seen תנצב"ה written out in full both ways.
To: leebee vmizrach; ExGeeEye
However, in the Hebrew text of 1 Samuel 25:29, on which this line is based, the word
nephesh is indeed used.
In either case, though, it expresses the biblical belief in life after death, which is the point.

As a Christian, I believe the soul to be immortal . . . . So, then, what's the point of the resurrection? Everyone dies. Some get resurrected and go to heaven. Some don't.
To: naturalized
Ah.
See, I and others like me see the soul as immortal--
--and the resurrection is of the body. With improvements.
As with our Lord, Whose soul did not die with His body on the cross--
--but rejoined that body, made new and improved, perfected as it were, at His resurrection.
And yes, the damned are resurrected bodily. They just-- have a different destination.
I have Scripture, if you need it.
