I received a call on the morning of New Years Day from an old friend I hadnt spoken to in a while, wishing me a Happy New Year. He asked me what Id done the night before and I told him I was in bed by ten p.m.. He made fun of me and said he knew me when I did anything but sleep on New Years Eve.
We laughed. He said he stayed home and watched ABCs Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve. And then he said something that made the laughter stop. He said in a slurred voice, Im Dick Clark and welcome to Time Square. Now back to you Ryan.
And then he added, Seriously, they should just retire him or have him talk to a camera thats not plugged in. He wouldnt even know the difference. We dont need to see something like that on New Years. Its a downer.
I didnt laugh and he sensed that what hed said was over the line and he changed the subject. We got off the phone shortly after. I chalked it up to him just trying to say something funny and going too far but then I wondered if this kind of thinking is prevalent in our society.
I googled around and sadly found many people arguing Dick Clark should retire from the public eye - for his own good.

Yes, it’ true - much of America has become harsh, indifferent, and narcissistic.
Thank you dhimmicrats.
People should work for as long as they wish and they aren’t a danger to anyone else.
I’m gonna miss Ernie Harwell for the rest of my life.
Same for Dave Niehaus. Great voice, passion for baseball, and a nicer guy you’d never meet.
I miss Pat Sumerall would still do NFL games. He still does a lot of voice-over commercials here in DFW, the voice is a little shaky, but still he would be better than anything else out there.
I was never the greatest Dick Clark fan in the world but his longevity and apparent durabilty impresses me. More power to him.

However, that does not mean that he is "entitled" to keep a job which his illness renders him less than 100% able to perform.
Thought the ping list would appreciate this short article. Its well written and quite touching.
If as they say a society can be judge by the way it treats it’s old and it’s young, then what does it say about us a society wherein more and more children have become a burden to be aborted, or in the very least postponed until more personally fulfilling goals are accomplished? And where our elderly are warehoused until judgement of the Death Pannels deem them a burden on the Government?

Ernie worked till just about a year before his death this past summer. He was the only broadcaster ever traded with a player to the Brooklyn Dodgers. (From the Crackers?)

Don Imus referenced “talking like Dick Clark” this morning when slurring a word.
No sense of decorum, I guess.
New Year’s Rockin’ Eve is a Dick Clark Production. As the owner, he’ll host for as long as he wants. That said, you have to know when to say when. He started it in 1972 to compete with Guy Lombardo to provide a show for a younger demographic. Sadly, he’s become Guy Lombardo at this point.
I don’t know, post stroke Dick Clark is a lot like fat Elvis, it’s just not the way people want to remember him. It’s great that he’s managed to recuperate and rehab enough to do stuff again, but if you grew up with a youthful spry Dick Clark (like most of us did given how long he’s been on TV and how much of that time he never looked a day over 30) it’s kind of disturbing.

You should have your “old friend” knee-capped then make jokes about people on crutches.
Do the Giants need a new place kicker?
I miss Andy Robustelli!
