Preparing for the End of the World: Making Your Family Tough
Human Events ^ | 11/30/10 | Skip Coryell

Posted on 11/30/2010 5:47:13 AM PST by Kartographer

In the opening article of this series I painted the following picture:

Close your eyes and imagine a world without electricity: no Fox News, no facebook, no email, no Blackberry, no cold drinks, no heat in the winter, no automobiles, no food and no way to cook it even if you had it. It’s the end of the world as we know it (TEOTWAWKI) and you and your family are going to die.

That’s a pretty bleak picture. But I left you with a little hope.

I clarified it by saying: “Unless, of course, you are prepared.”

The point was, I have excellent oversight and accountability.

And my point was making such a claim in that way, in this context, is nothing short of imbecilic. It's the cyberspace equivalent of "my dad can lick your dad."

Ahhhhhhh

more evidence of that perceptual/discernment incapacity again.

Perhaps SAM’S Club or 7/11 could sell you a few cases.

I’ve read a lot of Bataan survivor books because I grew up knowing so many of them and they always say what they missed most was salt, sugar and fats and when you think of it there isn’t anything that can’t be improved with the addition of one of those 3 ingredients.

I canned butter the other day, it was easy.

LOL, my husband would play hell trying to subjugate me also and my kids are grown and my dog is fat and worthless. I have many friends who seem to be waiting with great anticipation for the worst to happen. I just like to be prepared.

In 2008 we had the worst imaginable year as far as cash flow and we still ate well, we only spent an average of $50 a month on food and household goods.

We Americans have been spoiled as life for the average person has gotten better and better. As a child of the ‘50s I had everything that I needed and most of what I thought I wanted and with a few downturns in the journey I have continued in the same vein. It could continue to get better or it could turn around overnight. I don’t want anything bad to happen but bad things do happen and it is better to be prepared than not.

A few months ago someone here on FR recommended the novel One Second After, about an EMP that takes out all of North America. Downright bonechilling read. IIRC, the author has intelligence experience and wrote it to warn about the dangers and how ill prepared we are from the top down to deal with an EMP.

Our family is working very hard to be prepared. We're not "fantasizing" about a "Mad Max world", we just do the simple math that tells us that serious trouble could be ahead. There's nothing we would like more than for us to never have to use our emergency food supply, just like we don't want our home to burn down to collect the insurance money.

And part of this prepping activity has included a stronger emphasis on physical fitness - which pays us dividends every single day.

If I had to bet money I would bet that the US declines to about where India or Turkey is today, and everybody can still go to the beloved grocery store. The change may even be sufficiently gradual that we never even notice as we (and our children) become beggars.

In the meantime, I prepare for something worse than that - accumulating emergency food, protecting it, and feathering nests both inside and outside the US. It has proven to be both fulfilling and, and has rewarded me with many fine new friends of like mind.

You are absolutely correct.

Where do you live?

I read that book on some FReepers recommendation and you are absolutely correct.

I'm not an emotional type person and don't go in for sappy books, but that book had me crying at the end.

DE powder is also very good as part of a home made water filter, and you can even take the food grade internally to kill parasites. Sprinkled under/on a bed it can kill bed bugs as well. Pretty amazing stuff.

Do tell? You believe telling me you live with a genius makes the quality of your "insights" self-evident?

Either that or you're defacto "declaring victory" as a prelude to running away....

No problem. And I must add that about 3 months ago I took it daily with no problems (other than it was a little abrasive on the tongue, causing me to adopt a rather silly-looking method of drinking). I probably should still be taking it.

I don’t live where you would expect.

My manufacturing company is in the city, so I live in a small condo complex. My neighbors include Lebanese, Chinese, Latinos, African Americans, gays, and...oh yeah, a couple of anglos.

I have talked to all of them about the need to prepare and stick together in the event of a disaster. There was excellent sharing and cooperation in the afermath of Hurrican Ike.

If there is a diasaster I will extend the organization to include the block and then the neighborhood. If there is looting and such we will organize to defend the area.

Sounds like the faces I make when I take most any meds.
Can I ask about your source for its many uses? I thought about using it to treat the horse grain, egg pellets and even the dog food I’ve squirreled away in the barn. I’m even wondering if it would be effective against those darn squash bugs in the garden.

There’s great wisdom in your words and perspective though I think the milder scenario has no chance.

Though I could see the Lord protecting a SOMEWHAT milder than general situation where a great majority of authentic Christians are.

CONGRATS on your foresight.

Given the oligarchy’s plans for cities above 200-300,000

for starters,

you might do well to plan to exit your group to a safer more rural area.

I wonder if there are those out there that have a little nagging voice saying “Screw it”. If it is truly TEOTWAWKI, is struggling to survive worth it?

Yes, that might be true... but how true will it be when your first born looks up and says, 'Daddy, I'm so hungry'. Or when you think, 'I'm cold - gotta get a blanket'...

Thinking about giving up is a lot easier when the lights are on and your belly is full...
