Microsoft has launched Office 2011 for Mac to allow Mac users to avail of the latest versions of the company's productivity software.
Microsoft's Office for Mac General Manager Eric Wilfrid said, "As someone who works at Microsoft and deals with Apple often, I acknowledge that our companies compete."
"Some people choose Windows, and some people choose Mac. That conflict tends to get a lot of attention, but I deal in the reality that there are customers who love their Macs and also love using Office."

Mixed things don’t work well.
Sorta like Obama
I am not very familiar with Software for the MAC.
What products compete with Microsoft’s Office coming from Apple for the Mac ?
Site requires a password.....
iWork consists of NUMBERS, PAGES, and KEYNOTE, costs $69, reads and writes EXCEL, WORD, and POWER POINT files, and is probably faster.
OpenOffice does that too and you can add extensions and plug-ins like you can with Firefox. Best of all, it’s free.
I don’t know how it runs on a Mac, but after using the FREE OpenOffice package, I can’t see any reason to go back to Microsoft Office.
OpenOffice does everything MS-Office does and does it just as well.
And yes, it reads & writes MS-Office formated files.
I’ve used it on both. Prefer the Mac look and feel. Mac won’t run the macros, so if you need them, you’re SOL.
Excel is still what I use for numbers, but Mac iWorks Keynote is far better than PowerPoint.
That statement is no longer true, as of today.
Why do they call this Office 2011, when the latest version of MS Office available for Windows is called Office 2010? Or am I missing something?
Please tell me more about Open Office. How do I get it, and will it work smoothly with old Office files? I need to replace several computers at my office in the next 6 moths, and one of the pricey add ons is MS Office for everyone. We are still using Office 2000 and 2003.
Most of the people actually use Office very little, but it must be on all the machines. I’m talking about 10 users.
I can get new computers for everyone for around $500 ea., but the Office adds considerably to that since $500 machines don’t usually come with Office.
I’m eager for any information you can give me that will help me replace my aging system earlier. You can answer me here, or FReep Mail me. Thanks.
Does OpenOffice include Publisher and Access?
If Office 2003 does everything you need, then move it to the new machines.

“will it work smoothly with old Office files?”
Yes.
OpenOffice was originally created by Sun and marketed as StarOffice. They still sell an OpenOffice version with support as Oracle Open Office.
I just sent a kid off to college with OpenOffice instead of MS-Office. Never thought twice about it.
Mac article heads-up!
Thanks for the info. It looks like a way to save money when I redo our system.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
