My theory? Domestic American auudiences have basically become dumbed down and just want to play "big screen computer games", so the market responds to it, and vice versa.
Sorry to be a spoiler, but most of the films I view are foreign, mainly Asian, particularly Korean, Japanese and Indian. Some very clever movies with good acting, clean comments and resourceful story lines.
Hollywood is essentially a bankrupt mental wasteland, if you ask me.
I was Wall Street which was good but not nearly as good as the first one and I saw the Social Network which was 100 percent better than I expected. I saw The Switch which I wish I didn’t...lol.
Damn, and I thought I was gonna be able to go offline...
I love movies, since I don’t get any TV (intentionally) and just watch DVDs.
I recently re-watched BETWEEN THE LINES, which isn’t on DVD. Made in the late 70’s, it has a liberal bent but is so much fun it never bothers me. It’s about a Boston alternative newspaper and features a cast of folks who were just starting out and eventually became either stars on TV or movies (Marilu Henner, Jeff Goldblum) or noted character actors (John Heard, Lindsay Crouse, Stephen Collins). Terrific location shooting around Boston. If you liked WKRP IN CINCINNATTI I bet you’d like this.
Also saw THE PASSENGER by Antonioni, the ultimate America-hating italian director. I find this a fascinating movie, with one of the great long shots at the end. Nicholson is good, but the whole idea is what makes the movie.
FIVE EASY PIECES—again, Nicholson, again, a re-watch.
I picked up a bunch of new ones I haven’t seen yet: THE READER, AVATAR, CRAZY HEART, a few others. I have a feeling Avatar will go unwatched—I want to see it for the visuals, but it was playing in a video store and the dialogue was so wretched I had to leave the area.
Have also watched a bunch of Mystery Science Theater 3000 eps.
THE BAD LT. PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS
Big disappointment. Hollywoodized version of the original—all his “bad” behavior can be traced to his valiant attempt to save a prisoner’s life, so his drug use is a result of prescription drugs. Awwwww, he’s really a nice guy....
Can’t believe Werner Herzog is directing this lame stuff. AGUIRRE, WRATH OF GOD is one of the great movies.
RED
A Bruce Willis vehicle - but funny.
Well worth the matinee price to see.
Also, The Fantastic Mr. Fox is an interesting movie. It's a stop motion adaptation of a Roald Dahl book.
I also highly recommend Shutter Island and Inception if you haven't seen those yet.
Think so. Don’t remember what it was though so it couldn’t have been that great.
Very good with James Cagney.
Couple more I recently saw:
THE GAMBLER, a 70’s movie starring James Caan as a New York teacher who’s a gambling addict. Very 70’s, gritty, kind of in the Scorsese vein.
THE KILLER ELITE, not one of Sam Peckinpah’s best but I’ve always enjoyed it for the bizarre climactic fight on an abandoned battleship between James Caan, Burt Young and sword-wielding assassins. Like a precursor to John Woo’s A BETTER TOMORROW 2, with its gotta-see finale.
BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, more Peckinpah, this one a corrupt classic with Warren Oates driving a severed head to a reward, killing anyone who gets between him and the bounty. Dark, gritty and vile, but I love this movie.
THE GETAWAY continues my Peckinpah fest. Like KILLER ELITE it’s no classic, but it gets the job done. Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw don’t have much chemistry on-screen consideringwhat they were up to off-screen.
LAST MAN STANDING is one of my favorite Walter Hill movies. I’ve watched this bruce Willis flick, inspired by Yojimbo, several times over the years. I just like the desolation. Hill later worked on DEADWOOD, and it shows.
ZARDOZ—I love this insane movie.
POINT BLANK—Lee Marvin is double crossed and goes in search of revenge and his money. May be a dying man’s final fantasy. Great with-it direction.
RIO BRAVO/RED RIVER/EL DORADO/RIO LOBO—I went on a Hawks/Wayne splurge one recent weekend. Lots of rewatch value in these.
For you people with Netflix, I can’t say enough good things about this movie.
Sophie Scholl: The Final Days
Sophie Scholl was executed by guillotine by the Third Reich after she was arrested and found guilty of distributing anti-Nazi leaflets at her college campus and for this she was beheaded along with several of the other brave young God-fearing people of the “White Rose”, an underground Nazi resistance movement. This is a dramatization of that event, it is a movie that will not leave you and will have you thinking about it for days after viewing. I highly recommend this film. I found myself drawn into this movie like few other movies will do. This is brilliant stuff. The tension becomes almost unbearable. The depiction of Freisler (The judge), which might seem over the top, but is quite consistent with accounts and actual film clips of the trial, maybe even understated. He was diabolical, tyrannical and very hot tempered.

“Das Boot”, This film is probably one of the best war films ever made. Especially good if you have a home theater.
I’ve worked so hard, I took time to view this. I think everyone here will enjoy this short clip.

It's a vampire kind of flick. I didn't want to see it but hubby insisted.
I was so glad he did. The movie was beautifully shot but very creepy.
Disturbing is also a good word for it. I think it is a remake of a Swedish movie.
Well acted by all the cast and great script.
Hi Joe. thanks for thread.
This year I have seen MANY movies that I thoroughly enjoyed & 2 of them multiple times... LIKE REALLY multiple times
Because I do not want a bunch of pings & FR mail telling me how un-christian, how un-conservative, how un-patriotic I am, I wont be listing them. I get this attack/hate response invariably every time I post. That is one reason I do limited posting anymore here. Sad but true. I cant be who I really am w/o scrutiny of the most severe level
I was at the movies 3 times this past week. All new releases in past week or two. I now & then will jump into specific movie discussion. I know there are others here who are also movie enthusiasts .

The Social Network was really good as was The Town.
