Perhaps you'll be amused with Kustuica's take on Hollywood blockbusters:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLcUn436zd8 The bulk of Hollywood output always was filth, only the majority of us were too young or too naive to decipher it. It's enlightening to watch with 2010 eyes classics such as Johnny Guitar, Some Like It Hot or Gentlemen Prefer Blonds.

Movies do have power to change our perception. Here is one great recent film that tells this allegorically.

Couple more I recently saw:

THE GAMBLER, a 70’s movie starring James Caan as a New York teacher who’s a gambling addict. Very 70’s, gritty, kind of in the Scorsese vein.

THE KILLER ELITE, not one of Sam Peckinpah’s best but I’ve always enjoyed it for the bizarre climactic fight on an abandoned battleship between James Caan, Burt Young and sword-wielding assassins. Like a precursor to John Woo’s A BETTER TOMORROW 2, with its gotta-see finale.

BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, more Peckinpah, this one a corrupt classic with Warren Oates driving a severed head to a reward, killing anyone who gets between him and the bounty. Dark, gritty and vile, but I love this movie.

THE GETAWAY continues my Peckinpah fest. Like KILLER ELITE it’s no classic, but it gets the job done. Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw don’t have much chemistry on-screen consideringwhat they were up to off-screen.

LAST MAN STANDING is one of my favorite Walter Hill movies. I’ve watched this bruce Willis flick, inspired by Yojimbo, several times over the years. I just like the desolation. Hill later worked on DEADWOOD, and it shows.

ZARDOZ—I love this insane movie.

POINT BLANK—Lee Marvin is double crossed and goes in search of revenge and his money. May be a dying man’s final fantasy. Great with-it direction.

RIO BRAVO/RED RIVER/EL DORADO/RIO LOBO—I went on a Hawks/Wayne splurge one recent weekend. Lots of rewatch value in these.

“Dandy” is great, but I actually prefer “Footlight Parade”.

For you people with Netflix, I can’t say enough good things about this movie.

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days

Sophie Scholl was executed by guillotine by the Third Reich after she was arrested and found guilty of distributing anti-Nazi leaflets at her college campus and for this she was beheaded along with several of the other brave young God-fearing people of the “White Rose”, an underground Nazi resistance movement. This is a dramatization of that event, it is a movie that will not leave you and will have you thinking about it for days after viewing. I highly recommend this film. I found myself drawn into this movie like few other movies will do. This is brilliant stuff. The tension becomes almost unbearable. The depiction of Freisler (The judge), which might seem over the top, but is quite consistent with accounts and actual film clips of the trial, maybe even understated. He was diabolical, tyrannical and very hot tempered.

I was in Drvengrad, Kusturica’s village that he built, where that footage was filmed. I like that Kusturica ridicules Hollywood crap, and his films are very interesting, but his “anti-imperialist” schtick is getting old. At the restaurant in Drvengrad (which is ridiculously overpriced), they serve a soda with Che Guevara’s picture on the label. And they have a mural of George W. Bush and Javier Solana in jail (Solana I agree with, but wasn’t it Clinton who bombed the damn country and supported Serbia’s enemies?). Kind of disappointing that an otherwise original thinker would have such tired and inconsistent politics.

“Das Boot”, This film is probably one of the best war films ever made. Especially good if you have a home theater.

I saw “Let Me In” a couple of weeks ago.

It's a vampire kind of flick. I didn't want to see it but hubby insisted.

I was so glad he did. The movie was beautifully shot but very creepy.
Disturbing is also a good word for it. I think it is a remake of a Swedish movie.

Well acted by all the cast and great script.

Hands down best movie of the year. I was there for the Derby (infield, 4th turn)and love that horse more than any other. He was the greatest athlete of the 20th century.
I was not a Ron Turcotte fan though.

Hi Joe. thanks for thread.

This year I have seen MANY movies that I thoroughly enjoyed & 2 of them multiple times... LIKE REALLY multiple times

Because I do not want a bunch of pings & FR mail telling me how un-christian, how un-conservative, how un-patriotic I am, I wont be listing them. I get this attack/hate response invariably every time I post. That is one reason I do limited posting anymore here. Sad but true. I cant be who I really am w/o scrutiny of the most severe level

I was at the movies 3 times this past week. All new releases in past week or two. I now & then will jump into specific movie discussion. I know there are others here who are also movie enthusiasts .
