Happy Meal at 137 Days (Looks like it was just made!)

New York artist Sally Davies bought a plain hamburger Happy Meal from McDonalds. She didn’t eat it, but took pictures of it every day -for 137 days so far. The project will likely continue at least until the meal starts to look different.

Any bread products I’ve ever seen get mold when they’re dated. How could the bun have not changed in 137 days?

Depends on the environment. Here where I am in Texas, 7 days it is growing black mold filaments. At my shack in NM, it would last for months without mold. If you could keep the mice away.

As a food service professional, I've seen some really weird stuff with food. This isn't outside of what I consider 'not normal, but certainly possible'.

And it does make me wonder what would happen if the 'artist' actually got a life.

The ancient Egyptians should have used this in the Pharaohs crypt.

There are even instructions on how to start your own collection of old, self-preserving burgers.

That sounds like and interesting hobby....:>)

I wonder if there are instructions on how to start a collection of self-preserving chicken nuggets...lol

Some of the hard-tack used by the South during the Civil War was originally manufactured in the 1846-48 period of the Mexican American war. 30 year old bread, served to GIs. Go figure.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I might have to re-think my nutritional choices. Considering how well these preserve over time, these should provide the same effect if you eat a lot of them. Reservatol has nothing on Mickey D’s!

I’m enjoying an Egg McMuffin for breakfast right now. I found it in my 1998 Ford F-150 last night. I put it in the microwave to warm it up. Result: Delicious, just like I bought it at the local Mickey Dee’s. It was wrapped in some newspaper from 1999 so I was able to date it to October 12, 1999. I also found a small amount of vanilla milk shake in the bottom of a cup. It’s cooling off now and I’m having it as desert tonight.

Dryed out bread doesn't mold. Take a loaf of bread out of the bag and let it sit. It will get dry and then it will do nothing for years.

Dried-out anything doesn't mold. This is why the burgers in the picture in the thread didn't have ketchup, mustard, and pickles on them. There would have been too much moisture and they would have spoiled.

mmmmmmm, yummy!/sarc

If I leave fresh bread to its own for over a week, it turns green as do most other items shown in the picture. Your question ought to be why do these not after 137 days.

Maybe for the same reason I don’t consume soft drinks with one of the ingredients being Phosphoric Acid. This stuff will fuse heavy metals to whatever is close to it. If I were to injest any heavy metals, I would not want them fused to any part of my internals.

What does the fact that a food product, left on its own for a long period, would just dry up and sit there prove about its initial quality?

It's the same with butter and 'spread'. Butter deteriorates and some of the spreads, even when left opened and on the counter for a few weeks, will not. It reminds me of plastic food. To me this is an indication of something not quite right. Does the body need to contend with whatever is in those foods that resists natural decay? Then again, maybe we would be well-preserved if we ate more of this stuff, whatever the stuff is.

We used to compare being bored with watching grass grow, or watching paint dry. This is way better that all those.

Maybe it’s stuck in time. Someone should give it a little nudge.

Gives me an idea to photograph a vegan burger for six months.

I have had one in my freezer for about six years. My wife bought them when she thought it would be a good addition to our weight loss menu.

She made one.

And there they sit.

Every season we go through and toss out everything else. We are not people who don’t clean out the freezer. Its just funny to have the reminder of a bad food choice in our face every time we go get more ice cream.

I know someone with a 10 year old McDonald’s hamburger that looks just fine, maybe a little dry.

That’s odd, because when I used to buy one of those it would look like crap in a day....
