Natural disasters--such as a flood, hurricane, or blizzard--often come without warning. Stocking non-perishable food items ahead of time (and choosing wisely what you include) will help you weather the storm with less stress.

Fueling your body during an emergency is very different from your everyday diet. Because youll probably expend more energy than you normally would, you should eat high-energy, high-protein foods. And because you have a limited supply, the higher-quality foods you eat--and the less of them--the better. In a disaster or an emergency you want those calories, says Barry Swanson, a food scientist at Washington State University . You want some nutrients and some fibersomething to keep your diet normal.

I still remember going to “The Browns” house to be babysat (don’t recall their first names!). Mainly getting a Twinkee after lunch. Mr. Brown would have the other one in the “two pack”. That and hearing about Kennedy getting assasinated on their radio when I was there. I was three!

Cash.
That is my emergency stockpile.
If we had to leave home quickly I have all our important papers in one folder. Included in that folder is some cash.
Our plan would be to simply drive out of the affected area. If we did not have a relative we could go stay with we would simply find a motel away from the emergency.
I should note we do not live in a region of the country where we would be subject to being stranded in our homes for days at a time (such as an area that gets a lot of snow, or floods, or hurricanes.)
I think the first part of any plan would be to live somewhere that you do really need an emergency plan.

Check out the peanut flour. I always knew the oriental restaurants were not making those sauces from scratch. Now if only I could find some freeze dried lemon grass.
