Militaryless, democratic, non-conflict-having Costa Rica is the new front in the United States War on Inanimate Objects. The countrys national assembly has given the OK for a veritable US invasion force to enter Costa Rican territory: 7,000 marines on 46 warships, including the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship the USS Makin Island, pictured.
La Nación quotes a document from the US Embassy that states that, The US personnel in Costa Rica will be able to enjoy freedom of movement and the right to carry out the activities that they consider necessary to complete their mission.
Well isnt that just permissively vague.
The legislation says the mission has to do with fighting drug traffickers, as well as a few humanitarian goals, though the humanitarian use of a Harrier jet is still somewhat unclear.
On a casual note, I would point out again that for all the Costa Rican smugness about not having an army, they do a pretty good job of borrowing one when they need it. On a more serious note, because this is bound to be extremely politically unpopular domestically, the government must have a damn good reason for inviting all this firepower in from up north.
My guess is that the government is secretly terrified it is losing control of the security situation. They probably should be.
A proportionally very large amount of cocaine is busted in Costa Rica every year, and the country has become something of a bodega for Mexican and Colombian drug smugglers, what with its good infrastructure, weak judicial system, ill-equipped police force, long coastlines, remote beaches, terrible immigration enforcement, and ample opportunities for laundering money through real estate transactions and layers of shell corporations.
Im not sure how well-armed helicopters will change any of those factors, unless you could make the National Registry more transparent by slipping a few Hellfire missiles through the front door . Probably wouldnt hurt.
Anyway, keep ironing around that wrinkle fellas. Youll win the war on drugs any day now.
Is Costa Rica drilling for oil or something?
It a rehearsal for the Venezuela invasions
This is a joke, right?
Two or three MEUs, plus 46 warships?
We can’t do that anymore. Don’t have the forces.
I doubt this administration has that much foresight when it comes to national security
My deepest fear indeed. Give free reign to incoming UN (Chinese and Russian) forces.
a nuclear bomb is also an inanimate object but I get the feeling the writer is one of those libertards who thinks 9 year old drug addicted prostitutes should be totally okay.
I think this is another one of those people who don’t believe the US has the right to have a border. We’re just open territory ripe for conquest.
Those 7000 Marines could be securing OUR border, rather than invading Costa Rica.
If our forces are not concentrated, the Chinese and Neo-Soviets will have an easier time dealing with them. All they need to do is cut off our airspace in A-Stan and Iraq, and we are helpless. Will we go to nuclear war to save our soldiers? Not under Zero.
“This is a joke, right?

Not knowing anything about what we have or don’t have lying around, though I suspect what you say is true, WTH is this about?
46 warships? What did they do, count the lifeboats?
NO BLOOD FOR BANANAS!..............
Maybe nothing is happening and this person is just printing propaganda for Hugo Chevez?

article is a spoof but the US forces are not.
According to the July 5, 2010 Tico Times, “Costa Rica has granted the U.S. military a six-month window to bring 7,000 Marines, five planes and 46 warships into its territory”.
The 31-8 vote of the Legislative Assembly was presumably “to help stem the flow of drugs northward”.
Laura Chinchilla, Costa Rica’s first female president who won a landslide victory in February, has recently been overheard “off the record” saying that the real purpose for the influx of U.S. Marines is to “provide an economic stimulus for the economic downturn
in sex tourism”.
If this boon to the legal prostitution industry is extended past December 2010, then the thousands of drunken U.S. sailors getting laid at every corner in San Jose’ might even provide a “sustainable” replacement for both the medical and eco-tourism industries in Costa Rica.
“Condoms have been flying off the shelves” according to local pharmacies in anticipation of the “ships coming in”!
The DUmmies are on top of it:
Obama’s wag the dog moment to claim his own “military victory” going into the fall elections?
Uh, what about the right of Americans to move about our country freely, free from the fear of drug cartels and border incursions?
Gosh. You mean that causes problems for a country????
