USA 1 Ghana 2 The Black Stars kill the USA dream

According to the rules of engagement the Sons of Sam only attack if you attack them first. May be for the next World Cup this needs to be changed. Go ahead and shoot from the beginning.

When General Petraeus is done with Afghanistan he may counsel Team USA on how to change to rules of engagement.

It is no coincidence Ghana is the last team standing from the continent hosting the tournament. The Black Stars have four Africa Cup of Nations trophies. The team was the youngest during the World Cup 2006. Now the youngsters are all grown-ups and shining.

Kevin-Prince who scored the first goal was born in Berlin and used to play for the German youth team. His grandfather Helmut Rahn scored the winning goal in the 1954 World Cup Final (West Germany 3 Hungary 2). He would have been proud of his grandson.

There is a theoretical possibility today that both brothers will play against each other if Ghana and Germany reach the World Cup Final (if Prince’s injury is not too serious).

5-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant and two-term US President Bill Clinton brought star-shine to the VIP box. Both proved to be successful in their career with just occasional distraction of a sex scandal. The Bad Boys cheered for Team USA faithfully.

Landon Donovan was the leader for the Sons of Sam through the tournament. He calmly scored the penalty shot that gave the Team USA hopes through the regular time.

Gyan from Ghana was the person who killed the US Dreams for another chance on quarterfinal at the beginning of the extra time. The State Department should put him on the no-fly list until the next World Cup.

See you back in four years! Say, say, USA!

We won our group for the first time since 1930. We didn't lose a game in our group and lost in overtime in the round of 16. We scored four goals and gave up 3. We made the knockout round.

In 2006, we lost 2 and drew 1. We scored two goals and gave up 6. We didn't make the knockout round.

The US was competitive. Soccer can be a cruel game. We made a couple of costly mistakes against Ghana and had several good opportunities to win the game in regular time. Our team showed great character and resolve. They have nothing to be ashamed about.

My first choice would be Klinsi, but the fools at US Soccer won’t give him enough control.

My second choice would be Piotr Nowak.

He was an assistant for Bradley, and coached the U-23. He grew up in Poland, so he understands what it takes to compete at the highest levels. Currently he’s coaching Philadelphia’s MLS Club.

Nowak is more of the drill-sargeant type, which I think the US needs.

As I said, with a better coach, they could have gone farther.

However, that doesn't make soccer a fun game to watch. They have to do something different to make those skills pay off into scores more often.

LOL. That's your subjective judgment. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, so you are in a distinct minority. The difficulty in scoring is what makes it great to watch. It is like watching a scoreless pitching duel in baseball. Every pitch and every play is meaningful. The US-Ghana game was full of suspense and tension right to the last whistle.

De gustibus non est disputandum

Yeah, this was nothing to be ashamed of, but the one piece that’s been missing for several years now is the proven finisher - the Batistuta/Romario/Lineker type who makes the other team say “oh sh!t” when they get the ball in the box. When we develop someone like that this team will really do some things.

Exactly, pretty much it’s midfielders that score for the US. You can only go so far with that model.

World Cup Soccer always strikes me as a bunch of guys milling around trying not to screw up.

Boring.

Maybe. We'll never know. Players still play the game, not the coach. Mistakes were made by the players and we blew some excellent chances. The other team also had some world class players. Germany could only score one goal against them. Ghana won the under 20 world championship in 2009 beating Brazil.

The US is emerging on the world scene. We have a good youth program and we are competitve internationally at the under 17 and under 20 level.

True. Altidore is only 20, so he may very well develop into that feared finisher.

For the first time almost the entire US team is American born first generation children of immigrants. Unlike past teams who had at least half the team foreign born.

Tough loss, given both goals were kind of flukey.

But there is one silver lining, if it hasn’t been mentioned before. We all had to suffer every time they put the Rapist Clinton on the screen, usually right in someone’s face talking nonstop, once again trying to prove what a brilliant man he is.

Now that we are out, there wouldn’t be another game for the Rapist to crash for camera time, well not a US game anyway.

If I watch England-Germany tomorrow there’s a chance Jager and the Rapist may show up again, all buddy-buddy.

"lights out"

Pretty much my conclusion. It appears for many games that the first team to score a goal wins.

You won’t see soccer make it as a major sport in America until people see kids playing pickup soccer on their own time. I’ve personally never seen that. The only time I’ve seen non-school or professional soccer i.e. pickup soccer is when I saw some Hmong immigrants playing pickup soccer in my old hometown. Nobody at work EVER! talks about soccer. When kids play pickup soccer and adults talk about it at work or in the bar, then soccer will have arrived in the U.S. Don’t hold your breath.

Very true. The drama is much higher in the WC. I think the point was though that league games are usually much higher quality. The disparity of talent within teams, i.e. Howard vs. Findley, make WC games let interesting to watch.
