RabbiLIVE.com did a quick interview with Thomas, who works for Hearst Newspapers, last week. Her comments toward Israel were illuminating.

Perhaps Ms. Thomas has no grasp of history before 1948. Or, perhaps, her anti-Semitism blinds her to it. Has our national position changed so much toward Israel that we are willing to allow such idiocy to spew from our White House press corps?
Someone should give Ms. Thomas, who obviously lived during the period of World War II, a short primer on what happened to the Jews during those years. If she were so inclined, I could give her details of Israel's history, beginning with the Hebrew/Jewish occupation of those lands from Abrahams original entry through the Exodus from Egypt. Then we could discuss the establishment of the Jewish monarchy through the Davidic line and the Philistine occupation of the area of Gaza. Incidentally, the Philistines were Phoenicians, not Islamic Arabs.
She may be interested to hear that the Jews were taken from their home by Assyrians in 722 B.C and the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar in 586 B.C. They later returned to their homeland to find the remnant of Jews surrounded by hostile peoples against whom they were forced to defend themselves, leading to the reconstruction of the wall of Jerusalem. Alexander occupied Palestine as he marched through the region in 332 B.C. The Romans conquered Jerusalem in 63 B.C., eventually destroying the Temple in A.D. 70.
The result of the Jewish War with Rome and subsequent Roman rule was a dispersal of the Jewish people throughout the Empire, although many Jews remained in Palestine. Through the years following the fall of the Western Roman Empire (after A.D. 476), a large percentage of the population of the Holy Land was Jewish. ...

RE: “Is she a Jew?”
****************
I always thought she was................ could be yet another ‘self-hating Jew.’
She is an evil, vile (notice the same letters?!) thing. Go back to the gates of hell that spit you out HELen.
no. she is Lebanese.
What does her sexual orientation have to do with it? ;)
I guess the Arabs should then return to Arabia? Before they invaded, the area was mostly Chritians and Jews.
Her parents were Lebanese Christian Arabs. Most of the Lebanese Arab Christian women are good looking, at least when they are younger. She's never been good looking, not even acceptable looking. Unless a bag was involved.
Auschwitz, AKA , is in Poland. Auschwitz was the German name of the town the Poles called Oświęcim.
The camps in Germany proper were not nearly so bad. Bad enough of course, but until they started sending German Jews to the camps outside Germany proper, they had it easy compared to those from other parts of Europe. But in the end, it didn't matter if a Jew was from Germany, Poland, Austria, Russia or Ukraine. They were all headed to the lampshade factory.
hey Bill O your always putting down conservarives who have said things less offensive than this, now whatcha got to say?
She was born in 1920, she should remember for herself. And would if she wasn't so anti Jew. Perhaps her parents were anti Jew (although they would have left before many non middle eastern Jews had moved to Palistine, which was then populated, as much as it was populated at all, by Jews and Arabs, both Muslim and Christian ones, although more of the former.
Apparently she appologized for these remarks, but only today. From her webpage:
Helen Thomas issued the following statement today: I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.
Yea, right. Must have felt some heat from her employers at Hearst.
Does anyone else get sick of these people, after being called out for outrageous comments, claiming that such candid statements were “regrettable”? Or not “heart-felt”? When else do we hear the true feelings of such pitiful figures except when they are caught in a candid moment where they don’t believe they’ll be called out? Enough with the obvious hypocrisy. I mean, didn’t Richard Blumenthal also regret saying he served in Vietnam?
Well, Marge was close... “Hitler was good in the beginning, but he went too far.” But, ok, not quite as bad. And speaking of the 1930s, people forget that there were plenty of Americans who did, in fact, support Hitler early on and even after the war began. It is frightening to see the anger and lack of sense.
If Rush Limbaugh said...”tell the blacks to go back to Africa”...his house probably would be burned down and he would be drummed out of a job.
I do appreciate the history/geography lesson but I actually knew this. I got stuck on the Germany thing and meant to also include Poland...just a little angry when I typed that.
Been there done that. Not even a Kewpi doll or a T shirt to show for it.
Oh Yeah!
When else do we hear the true feelings of such pitiful figures except when they are caught in a candid moment where they dont believe theyll be called out?
Every once in a while the mask slips off, and we see the uglyness beneath it. Of course in Helen's case the exterior surface has it's issues as well.
lol. :)
ewwww! just implying her as a sexual being . . . eeeeeewwwwwwwww!
