Interestingly, Trump's advice is to raise tariffs on Chinese goods, using the money to pay off our debts and raising the costs of Chinese goods in America. The result would be that Americans would begin to manufacture more goods domestically, according to the star of The Apprentice. Of course, the Chinese would then raise taxes on U.S. goods in response, hurting American companies that export to China including... wait for it... General/Government Motors, whose cars sell very well in the People's Republic. So don't hold your breath waiting for Tim Geithner to place a call to Trump Tower, looking for fiscal advice.
Incidentally, Tim Geithner doesn't mind the Chinese laughing at him. He's used to it by now.

Trump seems to get it ... raise taxes on the Chinese, a good first step.
Trump is an idiot.
I generally impose this sort of thing, but in this case I think he’s right. The Chinese are dumping products below cost, in order to run American companies out of business. Screw them.
Meant to say “generally oppose this sort of thing”...
Trump is the latter day Dick Morris....
Trust nor believe either of them. They’re just in it for a paycheck.
Yes, you are right, but at various times, each ram into the truth. Why not use it when it happens.
However both are self promoting hustlers.
Your right. They all tried this during the great depression and its results were devastating.
“each ram into the truth”
Yeah, when the ‘truth’ pads their bottom line.
No, thanks.
They’re not our friends.
And what we’ve been doing for the last decade has been so helpful as well? There is a balance to all things.... neither extreme one sided “free” trade nor a massive tariffs system is the way to go.
I used to be against tariffs, but with China and the deficit we’ve been running, I don’t know if it would be a bad idea. What say those who know economics really well?
You’re dead right ... they all work this way, don’t they. Self interest. Way too much of that in Congress as well.
But — I didn’t say adopt them, I said use them when they ram the truth ... Same with Congress.
I think Japan is our #1 creditor, and China is #2. When it comes to defaulting on debt, who is hurt more, the debtor or the creditor? Seems to me the Chinese are on the hook in a big way.
Impose trade tariffs and see what happens.
Get rid of this tax system we have, go to a flat or a fair tax. Then abolish the Federal reserve and get back to a stable currency. Then abolish every single federal agency that has been sucking the coffers dry. Like the EPA, HHS, etc.
Ok, I fully agree with all those measures. But I don’t see any possibility of them occurring in the current and medium term. Hell, we had the President, and both houses of congress and NOTHING along those lines was done. I expect at least some IRS reform under Pres. Bush and we didn’t even get that.
The reason we have been gutted by slave labor is because of the cost and regulations of doing business here.
Remove those costs and the Chinese haven’t a chance no matter how low they drive their labor costs.
Oh and BTW. Ring in the big labor unions here. They’ve got out of hand and no longer represent the working people. Make business offer profit sharing or bonus plans to supplement wages.
Sadly..I agree with you on that.
But, I believe we will have to see a complete collapse of the present system here first before anything would be done. Then comes the question, what about civil unrest?
It would take a great president and strong congress to even attempt it.
Oh and one other thing. And dont feel I looking for an out and out fight with you on this because I am not and am sorry if I am coming across that way..But.
The way I would do it..instead of tariffs I would simply implement the safety standards on China’s goods the way we require for goods manufactured in this country. Now think on it. They would not be able to sell much at all here.
I would say.. “So Sorry. Chinese goods are full of lead and mercury and this and that. so clean up your act and you may be able to sell here again.”
That friend, is how you fight fire with fire.
