A strange and frightening thing happened this week while the nation was consumed with debate over the newly passed healthcare reform law. I ran into more than one person who was asking the question “Where can I go if our way of life here in the US disintegrates?” These were not crackpots or America haters, they are hard working productive members of society who love this country and appreciate what it stands for. The fact is, they have been pushed to point of seriously considering their future here to be in jeopardy and acknowledging the possibility there could be a better place to live than the United States. This is extraordinary because prior to the last few months none of these individuals would have ever considered such a thing.

Have things gotten so bad in America that people who love this country would actually consider leaving? Not yet, but people are beginning to extrapolate out over the next several years and realize that if we do not have a radical change in policy the United States will be bankrupt and our economy could collapse. Worse yet, many people believe the current administration will use such a crisis as a way to further consolidate power in the hands of the federal government thereby fundamentally changing America and the American way of life. You may consider this to be wild speculation but the fact is a growing number of people are becoming more and more worried this could be a real possibility and they are thinking about their future and that of their families in such an environment.

So how far down the socialist path must we go before people would actually give up and consider leaving?

This is not a simple question because really it’s not a zero sum game. The fact is the United States continues to be the beacon of freedom to the world as well as the last line of defense for all free peoples. If in fact we continue down the socialist path and ultimately surrender our personal freedoms to the government then will any part of the world continue to be free? Will another country be able to step into those shoes as the beacon of freedom? If freedom in the US were to erode would it be better to stay here and continue to fight for it or to move on to greener pastures in the hope of making a better life elsewhere? These obviously are all unanswerable questions but the mere fact they are being asked by people who never would have imagined the possibility of leaving the country they love really does send shivers down my spine. For what it’s worth, the country most often suggested as an alternative seems to be Australia.

All hope is not lost however, and the fight is not yet over. Far from it in fact, and actually we laid out the case for optimism on these very pages not long ago. Perhaps the fear some are currently experiencing can be channeled productively to help stem the socialist tide and take back the America we all know and love.

when you consider that the biggest economic power of teh 21st century appears likely to be china, it is a rather bleak prospect. The entire freedom/civil liberty thing may end up having been a 19th/20th century experiment that falls by the wayside.

I don’t buy into the China dominance theory. People were saying the same thing about Japan in the 1980’s and we see where they are now.

No. The only hope is to recall the troops from all over the globe, lift the drawbridge, kick out the domestic enemies, become self-sufficient, and lead by example. As George Washington said-do not become involved in the affairs of others.

That won't happen, so the answer is -No.

There will be war. Then there will be fewer people.

One also may want to watch Dr. Zivago and read Atlas Shrugged to get a feel for things to come. Only it would probably be much worse.

I agree. Anyone who knows a bit of recent Chinese history knows this isn't the first time China has reformed and allowed some degree of free enterprise only to crack back down and kick them all out and arrest all the Chinese who were employed by the foreign enterprises.So, what is happening today in China isn't new or unprecedented.

Also, let's remember, It was 20 short years ago China rolled tanks onto it's own citizens. China will again retreat back to tyranny at some point.
