In a cost-cutting move, the University of Sussex will largely scrap its History programme. European history will start with 1900. The university said the cuts were part of a plan to save £3 million, and were in response to a lack of student demand. It added that courses in film, music, media and global studies would continue to grow. The 2011 University of Sussex Course Catalog

The Sociology of Facebook Who should you friend and who should you ignore? What is the best way to un-friend a person without hurting her or his or its feelings? The dynamics of interpersonal net relationships will be explored on a practical basis. Students will spend their time criticising other students status updates and personal photos. By the end of the term, the student must demonstrate proficiency in remotely uploading pictures from any cell phone. Pass-fail only.
Post-Colonialism and Britains Got Talent Post-colonial theory entails destabilizing Western way of thinking, which had until recently been thought worthy of emulation. We now know that all cultures are equally good, except Western culture, which is uniformly bad, but only because it still contains vestiges of improper modes of thought. We investigate how, since all are necessarily equally talented, Simon Cowells cruel rejections are tolerated on National Television. Students will learn that their assessments of talent are just as valid as the experts.Has never worked yet seeing something being done once won’t make you an expert no matter haw mush you wish it to be true.see Obamma & crew.
“...were in response to a lack of student demand...”
If educational courses were up to students, then sex-ed and underwater basket weaving would top the demand. The rest of their time would be taken up with all important party classes.
Hmm, perhaps I shall enroll for my MA in comic books.
hmmm...and isn’t NC starting their history for high school students at 1877?
I sense a trend...
Garbage. There’s plenty of demand out there for real history, not the watered down trash that they’ve been calling ‘history’ for years and years.
This is just an excuse, blaming it on the students, what the institution values and does not value.
And I would assume that the history that they do teach is unadulterated socialist indoctrination?

Ah yes Marx,Lenin and Stalin try to save the world, but the evil Americans (capitalistic pigs)destroy them..
Class ended..
As we can see with the effort in North Carolina, this seems to be a widespread movement led by committed leftists in academia to basically eliminate any consciousness of history. I believe it to be Orwellian and diabolical. Eurasia has always been at war with Eastasia...
It’s a poor decision. If it hasn’t already, their reputation will suffer and they will attract the dregs of society. Just what kind of student do they want. What kind of institution do they see themselves being?
Maybe the profs are trying to bring about Marx’s predicted end of history, but this isn’t exactly what he had in mind.
Golly, it’s a good thing the study of real science is only 20 years old. There is no need to study the praticioners of black magic like Faraday, Fourier and others.
