Even now Mrs. abb is breading the pork chops and steaming the peas. I expect to smell cornbread shortly...

Good old Louisiana New Year’s supper going on here (in honor of husband’s people): ham, black-eyed peas, and smothered cabbage with corn bread and a Bloody Mary or two. Happy New Year!

Yup, about to go smoke a pork roast, bake the cornbread and throw in the black-eyed peas ... with a little Godiva dark chocolate for dessert :-)

We will open a couple of cans of B eye P’s. But you just reminded me that I need to make some cornbread. As a Southerner (Ala), I must have my B eye P’s and Hog Jowl on New Year’s Day. Hubby being a darn Yankee, has to have wieners and sour kraut. Strange meal for us because we won’t compromise on these traditions. LOL

My recipe:

Put three ice cubes in tumbler.
Rinse the ice cubes.
Pitch the peas.
Cover ice cubes with 1.5 ozs of fine Bourbon.
Enjoy slowly.

Adzuki beans nestled in sweet rice coverings ~ an adequate substitute. There are many threads, but you can start at : http://www.ehow.com/how_2075110_make-mochi.html

News Years meal has been the same (pork, peas, cabbage, cornbread) for the 31 years of our marriage. Mrs. abb’s mother and grandmother handed down this tradition and it stuck.

Reminds me of my house. Pork and black eye peas from the my southern roots and pork and sour kraut for my husbands Pennsylvania side. The kids just bury the peas and kraut in the mashed potatoes to get their luck for the year.

Have a pound of dried blackeyes cooking now.

No good southerner would omit this from the New Years Day tradition.

Had a Frenchman (Blackfoot) once tell me, Hummff peas are for cows and refused to eat them. I liked the guy, but his attitude toward good cooking was warped.

I like to cook but I like to eat more.

Happy New Years Day everyone.

Here's what we're having black-eyed peas wise :

Take

1 15 1/2 can black eyed peas, drained and rinsed
1 lg tomato, diced (or 1 28 oz can diced tomatoes)
1 medium ripe avocado, peeled and diced
1 jalapeno pepper, de seeded, chopped
1/3 cup chopped green pepper
2 green onions, chopped
1 TBSP minced fresh cilantro
Place all ingredients in a large bowl, stir, pour over it

1/3 cup prepared Italian salad dressing (any brand/flavor, I used one flavored with red pepper and Parmesan cheese as I am not fond of the taste of vinegar.)

Toss to coat , chill in fridge for ....awhile... serve with slotted spoon.

Very easy recipe for folks who may not be all too fond of black eyed peas, but feel that must keep up the tradition of serving them on New Year's Day( whether they like them or not).

For the rest, we are having roast duckling with orange sauce,cranberry/herb dressing, tossed salad, and rolls with honey butter.

I guess it was only a tradition in my family, going back before my GGGdad since I have never seen it done elsewhere, but we put a silver dollar (1803) in the pot with the black eyed peas for good luck. Family lore says it was the first dollar he made after he arrived and if you have the coin spooned on your plate during serving you get an extra dose of good luck.

I always thought I was so lucky to get the dollar until I grew older and realized my father did it every year on purpose. God I miss that man.

LOL. Yeah, I don’t know what my grown children do at their houses. Their tradition is so mixed. At least I know that my daughter does not eat pork. She’s a veggie.
