Can anyone tell me with certainty whether LORAN will be turned-off on January 4? (Obama wants the money for illegal aliens). I have been unable to get an answer anywhere. Thanks.
I thought GPS made loran obsolete???
I would use both, and then when LORAN stops, you’ll know, and you will still know your location.
Status of LORAN-C TerminationThe Homeland Security Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010 allows for termination of the LORAN-C signal on January 4, 2010, after certification from the Commandant of the Coast Guard that it is not needed for navigation and from the Secretary of DHS that it is not needed as a backup for GPS. Full details are contained in Section 559 of this act which can be found at the Government Printing Office website (clicking on the link will open a new window).
Another thing under the radar seems to be vitamins will disappear as on Jan 1st due to a treaty and the WHO. Codex Alimentarius is what to "Google". The world government will now decide that vitamins are a toxin and must be regulated. Also they will allow food from any country as long as it has been irradiated.
We have been so wrapped up in Health Care and global warming, the Czar's are doing the devils work in the background with NO Input from the voters. Obama will have America completely dismantled in another year.
I don't have enough time in the day to be mad about everything!
It seems like were putting all our eggs in one basket by shutting down loran. Bad move-
therefore gatecrashers no longer it, as they all have magellans or whatever.
LORAN is expensive to maintain and operate and it’s outdated.
More info: the GPS constellation can be shut off if the president so orders it.
No. It says it CAN be turned-off is USCG, DHS, etc., approve.
LORAN’s going down.
This is why we had the Northstar M1 LORAN receiver removed from our Beech Bonanza last year and replaced with a second Garmin GPS (this one IFR certified and slaved to the autopilot). I would have kept the Northstar if the LORAN chain was going to remain up because I like having redundancy in as many aircraft systems as possible. GPS is great, but there’s something about having a reliable ground-based system that can’t be beat, in my opinion.
They were going to shutdown VOR and ADF but backed down ... this was under Bush ....
Don’t you still carry a sextant in your flight bag?
(ADF approaches were always my favorite.)
I still cry every time I fly over NAS South Weymouth.

What will happen to the millions of vitamins that are currently on shelves all over the country?
Being that you are a pilot, you'll know about these, I reckon' (no pun intended)

From a national security stand point, you NEVER put all your eggs in one basket. We would be completely dependent on a single technology (GPS) which can be jammed, shot down, attacked with ground based lasers, etc. We have backups built into GPS, being able to encrypt the signal (make it less accurate), shift it and screw up the bad guy if they try to use our own signal, turn it off, back up satellites, we can use sensor fusion GPS+INS etc etc etc. However, we are now going to completely rely ona single technology that is extremely critical when it comes to national security and transportation. This IMHO is stupid. This could become an achilles heal.
We are generally very smart when it comes to things like this. Like the M16 made by Colt (CT) and FN (SC) in the US. The FBCB2 system, made by Paravant and Litton......we even avoid single source suppliers, we avoid single technology guidance systems thereby making counter measures nearly impossible because we use GPS, laser, Electro optical, IR, mmWR, and SACLOS. A quick and true historical example: Years past, for budget reasons the Germans placed all their eggs in one basket using SACLOS systems in the TOW, Milan, HOT missiles and they used them on ground and air based platforms. The Soviets developed Shitora, a SACLOS defeating system, and this would have caused serious problems for them. Of course you can harden these systems (which we did), but still, you get the point that you make yourself vulnerable this way.
Loran allows for a ground based navigational system that serves as a good alternative “just in case.” You keep it alive and on the back burner. You spend some money advancing the technology, patch things together, etc. You know that GPS is the golden child, the standard which everyone uses, but Loran is the “smash glass in case of emergency,” panic button. Preexisting infrastructure, tested and proven technology (Since WWII for the US Navy), we just make incremental improvements and keep the patient barely breathing and alive enough in the right places (where we need it) to where if something were to go sideways we can react.
So, in summary, there isn’t a single government website that says that yes, LORAN will be turned-off on January 4. The perfect example for Obozo’s criminally incompetent and treasonous Reich.
Oh to hell with it. LORAN served its purpose in its day, but with GPS it is hardly necessary.
If that karks your sweaty drawers, you can learn the equations, break out the sextant, chronometer and navigation charts, and plot your own position.
If that’s too much work, stay ashore.
