I thought GPS made loran obsolete???
I would use both, and then when LORAN stops, you’ll know, and you will still know your location.
Status of LORAN-C TerminationThe Homeland Security Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010 allows for termination of the LORAN-C signal on January 4, 2010, after certification from the Commandant of the Coast Guard that it is not needed for navigation and from the Secretary of DHS that it is not needed as a backup for GPS. Full details are contained in Section 559 of this act which can be found at the Government Printing Office website (clicking on the link will open a new window).
Another thing under the radar seems to be vitamins will disappear as on Jan 1st due to a treaty and the WHO. Codex Alimentarius is what to "Google". The world government will now decide that vitamins are a toxin and must be regulated. Also they will allow food from any country as long as it has been irradiated.
We have been so wrapped up in Health Care and global warming, the Czar's are doing the devils work in the background with NO Input from the voters. Obama will have America completely dismantled in another year.
I don't have enough time in the day to be mad about everything!
LORAN is expensive to maintain and operate and it’s outdated.
More info: the GPS constellation can be shut off if the president so orders it.
LORAN’s going down.
This is why we had the Northstar M1 LORAN receiver removed from our Beech Bonanza last year and replaced with a second Garmin GPS (this one IFR certified and slaved to the autopilot). I would have kept the Northstar if the LORAN chain was going to remain up because I like having redundancy in as many aircraft systems as possible. GPS is great, but there’s something about having a reliable ground-based system that can’t be beat, in my opinion.
They were going to shutdown VOR and ADF but backed down ... this was under Bush ....
Don’t you still carry a sextant in your flight bag?
(ADF approaches were always my favorite.)
I still cry every time I fly over NAS South Weymouth.

So, in summary, there isn’t a single government website that says that yes, LORAN will be turned-off on January 4. The perfect example for Obozo’s criminally incompetent and treasonous Reich.
Well, they won’t turn the old fashioned kind of land navigation off. ;-)
