Republicans like to point to Ronald Reagan for inspiration. However, we have to resign ourselves to the fact that Ronald Reagan is dead. Worse, his legacy was killed off by his own party, the same Republicans who say he inspired them.
The only lasting legacy to George W. Bush was the nomination of two constructionist judges and a fading response to terrorism. For eight years, we saw GW insist more on getting along than being right. Even the war in Iraq was fought on the cheap, probably out of fear of the cost of waging war, which defies the logic of waging war. In the long run, his own dithering on Iraq cost many lives before finally settling on the Surge.

Rants are helpful. /s
Had Gore been elected, we would have had cap and trade or some variant long ago. While Bush held his thumb in the dike, the earth cooled and the fallacies of the "consensus" began to be exposed.
The OP(formerly the GOP) has moved far enough to the socialist left over the years that Conservatives have become RINOs.
GWB was not a good conservative.
However, the alternatives like McCain, Kerry and Gore would have been worse.
You know the reason why we couldn’t find good candidates? Republicans have been “politically correct” by being against “personality politics”. We usually only learn to know the candidates during the campaign because our “political correctness” prevent us from exploring good candidates prior to primaries/election season.
Example: The attack of some Republicans against the supporters of Sarah Palin are mainly due to this political correctness.
Let the Conservatives field their potential candidates and let the media vet (i.e., field dress) them now than later.
More names of potential conservatives ... the better.
And let them follow the footsteps of Sarah. Fight now!
I predict that if we are led out of this mess it will be women who do it. Sarah, Michele Bachmann, and Liz Cheney have shown more spine than any 3 Republican males around today.
Even the war in Iraq was fought on the cheap,Whoa. Stop right there.
Which Iraq 'war'?
The one where we kicked Saddam's butt in a couple months, and every swinging d__k in his army ran away like girls --- even though Colin Powell 'ticked off' the Turks and made our 4th ID float at sea for month instead of launching their attack from the North , getting the Sunni Triangle in a pincer maneuver with the 3rd ID coming up from the South, thereforecontrolling'pacifying' all of Iraq? But thanks to Powell we couldn't DO THAT AS PLANNED and had to stop at Baghdad.Orrrrr, the Iraq 'war' which came AFTER we kicked Saddam's rear. But where the Sunni Triangle was still a haven of jihadist dead-enders and Baathist loyalists (did I mention Colin Powell screwing up?, yeah, okay), and politicians were now in charge of (cough) 'policy' and wouldn't let some Marine or Army SNIPER put a .308 Lapua round in 'Mookie Al-Sadar's' skull the moment he opened his yap, which would have ended or prevented any 'uprising' in Baghdad pdq.
So which 'war' are we speaking of that was 'fought on the cheap'?
[yes, this is run on sentence Wednesday]
And I bet that AFTER Pedro Primavera goes to the Eye Doctor he brags about his 20/20 Hindsight vision. (fricken mutt, I'm spttin' nails!)
GWB was not a good conservative.
There, fixed it for ya.
in all honesty, we know who the 'party at all cost' types are, and those who are willing to fight and risk it all to save it all...
i just wish the rinos would realize that if they dont grow a pair they aint gonna have a thin dime left and will be even worse off in name...
also hope they got lots of bean stored, or are good field hands...
There are plenty of them around, but they aren't the only problem.
The problem at hand is that the "coalition" that scored victories under Reagan has largely disintegrated. There are two fights going on: one within the Republican Party, which is the primary (but only) and most convenient vehicle upon which to convey a libertarian-conservative platform; the second is going on within the conservative movement itself over exactly what constitutes conservatism.
Just as an example: you'll see plenty of my comments around here, regularly quoting Reagan or Coolidge, the Founders, or other known conservatives. Usually, many of thse get slammed by other Freepers; today I was accused of being a anti-American race-baiter who loves Muslims, while on other days I have been accused of being anything from a troll to a liberal.
It's really sad.
My worst fear is that a significant number of conservatives today are content to settle for charisma and populism rather than solid substance and principle. Now, based on that line alone, I could be accused of attacking Sarah Palin, but frankly, from what I read of her, she seems down to earth and common sense, but we're not just electing a president every four years; we're electing an administration. And, with all honesty, if Palin is surrounded by bad people, then it won't make a lick of difference as to whether she herself is any good. And, if in 2010, we elect more politicians rather than statesmen and citizen-legislators, then, at least to me, I think that we as a nation will be doomed to repeat the same old sh-t again and again, unless, of course, the U.S. loses its AAA credit rating in 2013 (or sooner), the house of cards finally starts to really crumble, and the sh-t hits the fan...for real.
“Bush, Rove and the rest of the Republican Party hierarchy finally drove the last nail in Ronald Reagan’s America. It was all about winning elections and nothing to do with ideals. It seems that all Democrats and most Republicans are there primarily to maintain power. Democrats are just better at it, even if it means destroying this nation. A recent RNC e-mail by John McCain headlines with “They will stop at nothing.” They are just now realizing it? “
I coulda(shoulda) written this part myself ;-)
“LOL, before too long Rabs, you will overtake ME as the most obnoxious Freeper that RINOS love to hate! “
We are only 3 of the “Right Wing Six”
I’m not sure of the other three....hmmmmm sickoflibs/
.
Youze guys pick the other 2.
George Bush didn’t hold his finger to the dike. Where GW’s big government push filed he pretended to be fighting against BG.
GW was and is a big government, big spending RINO.
Oh no...not again...I’m still sore from yesterday’s barnburner...:^)
Eight Wasted Years...Margaret Thatcher used to talk about the ratchet effect. When the Left gets power, she said, they drive everything Left; when the Right gets power, they slow the Leftward drive, perhaps even halt it for a spell; but nothing ever gets moved to the Right. U.S. politics in the 21st century so far bears out this dismal analysis. What does the Right have to show for eight years of a Republican presidency? I supported George W. Bush in 2000 because I thought he had a conservative bone in his body somewhere. I supported him in 2004 because I thought him the lesser of two evils. At this point, I wouldnt let the fool park his car in my driveway. Bruce Bartlett was right, every damn word...Bill Gertz interview on Hannity and Colmes Gertz: Well he casts himself as a compassionate conservative and I argue that he's neither. That his administration is neither. He's done tremendous damage to the conservative movement... |
