Climategate: Green activist attacks half the electorate as lunatic Right-wing conspiracy theorists
Telegraph Blogs (U.K.) ^ | December 6, 2009 | Daniel Hannan

Want to know why most British voters are unconvinced by the Rio-Kyoto-Copenhagen crowd? Read this.

Joss Garman, who co-founded the pressure group Plane Stupid, rails at the “undiluted lunacy” of the conservative movement. We Rightists, he says, have concocted a conspiracy theory that is imperilling the planet. We apparently believe that scientists and governments are deliberately, maliciously and secretly falsifying climate change data.

“I find it extraordinary that the Conservatives Andrew Tyrie and Daniel Hannan, James Delingpole of The Daily Telegraph and Fraser Nelson of The Spectator have gambled their reputations on a conspiracy theory supported by the flimsiest of evidence.”

The others he names will, no doubt, speak for themselves. My own views on climate change are summarised here. As you will see, far from alleging a conspiracy, I wrote the following:

“It isn’t a conspiracy. Reading the leaked emails, it seems pretty clear that their authors genuinely believe that the world is getting hotter as a result of human activity.”

I went on to say that I, too, thought that the world was warming, and that human activity might well be playing a part in the process. I simply wondered whether there were cheaper and more effective strategies than spending hundreds of billions of pounds on a scheme which, even according to its most evangelical supporters, will slow the heating process only slightly. “It ought to be possible,” I concluded, “to accept the case for global warming – and, indeed, for an anthropogenic component therein – while still believing that the Rio-Kyoto-Copenhagen agenda represents a misallocation of resources.”

This, in Garman’s eyes, makes me a “denier”, the moral equivalent of a Holocaust denier. You don’t think that’s his implication? Then read the next bit of his article: “The Daily Express front page last week, headlined ‘The Big Climate

Aye, that we do. And we also wnat to know what the hell “climate change” is, and where “global warming” went.

supported by the flimsiest of (MANIPULATED) evidence.

Even if the Earth was warming, something I used to accept; the climate changed dramatically being both significantly hotter and colder long before human industrial activity.

Moreover the Medieval Warm Period was good times and good wines for all concerned. The warming was not catastrophic, it was nice.

If you want me to be concerned, alert me when average temperatures are as high as the Medieval warm period and still climbing higher; until then they can STFU and get their hands off my wallet, and shove their regulations where the Sun cannot warm them.

Garman makes this point, unremarked by Hannon:

Earlier this year they hitched their wagons to Ian Plimer, an Australian academic whose central thesis involves the assertion that volcanoes emit more CO2 than humans. It was Plimer's work that formed the core of the Daily Express front page last week, headlined "The Big Climate Change Fraud". This will appear in exhibitions in years to come alongside the Daily Mail headline of the Thirties – "Hurrah for the Blackshirts".

His volcano claim is an assertion that can be tested beyond doubt by the application of empirical data. And, of course, Plimer is wrong. Very wrong. In fact, humans emit 130 times more CO2 than volcanoes. Nasa's Gavin Schmidt, a world-leading climate scientist, dissected the Plimer hypothesis in excruciating detail and found it to be based, among other things, on a "basic logical fallacy".

There is no evidence of any widespread anthropogenic factor to global warming and climate change. The environmental extremist movement continues their religious crusade, however. This is more social engineering and an ongoing effort by leftists to control the lives of ALL human beings. Higher taxes, bigger government and more regulation are the three main aspects needed for cradle to grave liberalism to work most effectively. America's slow march towards socialism is well under way.

Because I don't believe them I'm a conspiritorialist? A "climate change" denial-er? BTW, climate change to me, is when when the earth moves in its orbit about the sun and the axis tilt causes the northern half to move away from, or closer to, the sun, causing, respectively, winter and summer. That's climate change.

Besides, why the name change? Global Warming is what they're talking about it. Are they trying to hedge their bets, so no matter if it turns warmer or colder, they can call it "climate change", and blame humans for it?

And yes, it is a swindle- a fraud and a cheat and a scam-- a deliberately designed construct intended to con you out of things you hold dear-- money, and prosperity, and freedom... and a few other things, as well.

Yeah right. We are supposed to believe a computer modeler (Gavin Dipshit Schmidt)over a Geologist (Ian Plimer)?

Plimer’s book is awesome by the way. Filled with peer reviewed citations to back up every single one of his claims.

By the way...you can only see 15% of the worlds volcanoes. Most volcanoes are in the deep oceans. The reason you never see the sea bubbling with in those areas is because of the pressure and temperature. CO2 from volcanoes in the deep ocean is quickly absorbed. Inverse solubility.

Not just Schmidt. The makers of “Swindle” acknowledged and apologized for their mistaken claim that vulcan CO2 exceeds human-caused CO2, I thought.

Has Plimer a new point, refuting the refuters?

Comparison of CO2 emissions from volcanoes vs. human activities.

Scientists have calculated that volcanoes emit between about 130-230 million tonnes (145-255 million tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (Gerlach, 1999, 1991). This estimate includes both subaerial and submarine volcanoes, about in equal amounts. Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006) - The reference gives the amount of released carbon (C), rather than CO2, through 2003.]. Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes—the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)

Gas studies at volcanoes worldwide have helped volcanologists tally up a global volcanic CO2 budget in the same way that nations around the globe have cooperated to determine how much CO2 is released by human activity through the burning of fossil fuels. Our studies show that globally, volcanoes on land and under the sea release a total of about 200 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

This seems like a huge amount of CO2, but a visit to the U.S. Department of Energy's Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) website (http://cdiac.ornl.gov/) helps anyone armed with a handheld calculator and a high school chemistry text put the volcanic CO2 tally into perspective. Because while 200 million tonnes of CO2 is large, the global fossil fuel CO2 emissions for 2003 tipped the scales at 26.8 billion tonnes. Thus, not only does volcanic CO2 not dwarf that of human activity, it actually comprises less than 1 percent of that value.

Ok...I give up..how did the government measure all the CO2 released from volcanoes in the deep oceans?

Answer: They didn’t

You really should read Plimer’s book. Try to look at this from his perspective...in geologic terms. The earth has only trace amounts of carbon dioxide because of volcanoes.

The geologic record supports that the atmosphere was as much as 20 times the current levels. How did that happen?

Volcanoes.

Why do we have 21% oxygen in the atmosphere? It sure isn’t being created in volcanoes. It is because of photosynthesis. Humans may be enriching the planet with CO2 but they are certainly not causing it to warm because of the CO2 they are emitting. Ocean uptake, photsynthesis, and weathering reactions are taking the sequestering the CO2. The UN IPCC’s and Gavin Schmidt’s models show that this CO2 is staying in the atmosphere for 200 years or more.

That has been shown to be incorrect. Essenhigh’s papers have falsified the models once again.

Schmidt and the media are setting up a strawman here.
