Six teenagers are under observation in a Benjaminville, Virginia, hospital following the nation's first drive-by bulbing on Friday night. The incident raised concerns of mercury poisoning from the exploded CFL light bulbs used by the perpetrators. The local chapter of the Natural Resources Committee issued a statement condemning "this obvious right-wing Republican ecoterrorist hate crime."

One of the nice things about FR is the ability to learn from experts.
Since growing up in Cleveland in the 1950s, breathing the air and drinking the water, didn’t do me in, I’m not too worried about light bulbs.
It looks like these Environmental idiots didn’t think about how dangerous these bulbs were before they forcedthem upon us.What dopes.
(Degree in Chemistry, lots of people spelled the element "Fluorine" as "Flouring" so I'm hyper-sensitive on that one word.)
I have often wondered about the electrical fields emitting from fluorescent bulbs/fixture....I suspect there are high electrostatic fields, from my observations of radio interference, related to the use of these bulbs/tubes.....for sure the E field is high, and the H field is probably high due the ballast, required to operate the device......
An additional concern is the X-rays emitted....
It would be interesting to research the rise in Brain cancer and the use of fluorescent bulbs.....
Being the expert can you tell me if Ballast installation causes any health concerns.
I'm from the South, so "fluorine" sounds like it should be the name of a second cousin -- Florene.

old ballast (more than 6 years old) do not eat or burn in your Weber or campfire
new electronic ballast you can eat or smoke it )just not while plugged in).

Re “Heavy handed boondoggle” You got it! This should be a campaign issue but nobody seems to be touching it which lets the MSM drive the campaign train. I rail on it in my website http://www.theusmat.com/ but nobody reads that. A few more incidents where one of these things is found to cause serious illness or worse and gets reported may make it a public issue

All I know is what I read from EPA bulletins
Your assertion is ;Because you claim to work on, design, and build, these type bulbs There is no difference between the mercury,contained in long tube and (even less) in compact fluorescent bulbs. That both use the same method of coating the fluorine/mercury onto the tubes.
You furthur suggest There is no danger (with I assume resonable handling) but if CFL bulb breaks it can be handled like any long tube fluorescent bulb and wouldn’t require the excessive precautions cited by the EPA...And furthur that the EPA doesn’t restrict permission to use a specific type of mercury which it claims is extremely dangerous soley to the manufactuers of compact fluorescent bulbs .
Now if that is true ....Thats a WOW ....I think you should reach Joe Schultz and get on his show
It is extremely funny that conservatives rail against big government saying it is ineffectual and counter-productive; then proceed to quote them as if they are some sort of super-science gurus who know it all.
Take it from me, some of the dumbest doorknobs I have ever met work for the EPA.
