For many people (and yes Im jumping to conclusions and making sweeping generalizations here) No one should die because they cant afford health care is the weasel way of saying I want someone else to pay for it without sounding like a panhandler. So, take what follows with a grain of salt, OK?
On that note, someones Facebook status said:
No one should die because they cannot afford health care, and no one should go broke because they get sick. If you agree, please post this as your status for the rest of the day.
No one should die just because they were born in sub-Saharan Africa, either. But they do. Doesnt make it fair, but it happens. For every poor or underprivileged Westerner complaining about their lack of health care (NB: even the poorest Americans have access to better health care than, I would venture to guess, 85% of the earths population has ever had), there are a million people living on $1 and a cup of rice each day so cry me a fucking river.
Every one of us will die at the crossroads of some particular circumstances, time, and place.
Some of us die in our sleep. Some of us are merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some of us will die because the technology to cure what ails us has not yet been invented. Some of us will die because we made poor choices that presently impact our ability to care for ourselves. And some of us will die unfortunately through no direct fault of our own, because we cant afford to pay for the technology that does exist.
To lament the fact that some people die under seemingly inopportune circumstances is folly; it ignores the lions share of the equation. Financial circumstances are a scapegoat, because at nearly any time and place where the individual isnt DOA, a change in financial circumstances might forestall death for a few hours, days, weeks, or months.
Youll get no arguments from me, if you say that health care is too expensive: blame the AMA cartel, the FDA, blame Big Insurance, etc. But National Healthcare is healthcare fascism, the insurers want guaranteed profits, guaranteed customers for life, and Uncle Sam to pay the bills. They want to sell you your own welfare.
Youll get no arguments from me, if you say that the system needs to be reformed: specifically it needs to not be a system at all. People arent permitted under the law to care for themselves or to arrange for the care of others. Or because the consumer is not the customer, and the customer enjoys certain tax privileges that the consumer does not, etc. Or because people have been conditioned to believe that insurance should pay for an annual check-up and dental exams and all sorts of other routine maintenance instead of just providing for accidents and serious illnesses.
The problem is that health care, medicine, long term care, etc., is damned expensive. Government is the problem in health care, which keeps it unaffordable.
Asking or forcing others to pay the costs which you cant afford will do nothing to actually solve that problem, it just shifts the burden, [expletive deleted] up someone elses life circumstances, exacerbating the problem for the future.
I was thinking I would make my status a variation of that last paragraph:
"Simply making others pay costs that someone else can't afford will do nothing to solve that problem -- it just shifts the burden, creates new problems, and exacerbates the problem for future generations."
But of course, then we sound like heartless b@$t@rd$.
Anybody else have another idea?
They don’t die. It’s USA law that any emergency room must fully treat, regardless the ability to pay.
My FB reply:
The status update people are posting originated from DU, and it is foolish. No one will die because they cannot afford health insurance, because lifesaving care without evidence of insurability is guaranteed by state law, nationwide. Moreover, no one... should go broke because they are being forced to pay for the someone else’s health insurance. Period.
No one should HAVE to pay for someone else’s health care.
I’m using snowrip’s reply.
Just like the DU snip, it’s short, to the point, and effective.
On the other hand, why should individuals be responsible for another person’s healthcare?
Many people choose not to purchase healthcare. So, why is that my fault?
I have healthcare insurance. But do I get the same healthcare as Ted Kennedy got, or Barak Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and the other Liberal Elites get? Of course not.
The sham of all of this is that the Liberal Elite takes away healthcare from the wealthier non-rich and gives to the less wealthy non-rich. They will NEVER take it away from themselves.
So, if the rich won’t share, but should we be forced AT GUNPOINT to share?
Gunpoint? Yes, if you don’t do what they say and pay all the taxes, they will eventually show up to your house will lethal force.
No nation should go broke because you won’t pay for a freakin’ check-up.
No one dies because they are legally denied health care...
If you walk into an ER in any hospital in this country, ANY, they are legally required to give you care, period.
This argument is typical liberal claptrap, its just not true.
Some of us will die because there are only nine Proton Therapy Machines in the world. One being at Mass General. These are for deep brain tumors. However, there are only twenty four hours in the day. So people run out of time. Make everyone’s time equal. Go ahead, try.
I responded to two of these posts yesterday. I don’t know their source. In sum, I said that (1) nobody dies because they can’t afford healthcare (2) some people do go broker because they can’t afford it, but usually that’s because they CHOOSE to not buy health insurance (3) if you are in poverty, you are ALREADY covered by Medicaid (4) the real issue is NON-CATASTROPHIC care — why should others be expected to pay for the routine care of your OWN BODY ???
ANSWER: Try... just try to do to lawyers what they are trying to do to doctors.
A Doctors Plan for Legal Industry Reform [An awesome criticism/parody of Obamacare!]

No?
Then under Obama Care, people will die because we cannot afford their Health Care.
That stuff doesn't change. What changes is that the government will steal additional money from your pocket and you will end up waiting longer to receive increasingly scarce services. And THEY promote their plan as better and more moral. It is neither.
The proper reply: Why would you want to deny your children and grandchildren the lifestyle you live now?
They don't die in America, NOW, but once socialized medicine takes over they will!!
Unless they are adults free to chose.
No one should die because doctors make mistakes.
Unless we recognize that all humans are fallible and imperfect.
No one should die because they did something risky.
Unless we allow people to direct their own lives.
This can go one forever if one wants to do so but the statements are meaningless. Freedom vs. control is the issue; the fascists want to control your lives.
Agreed.
I almost wrote this, but declined to post...too many professional contacts I would rather not confront.
“No one should die because government health care won’t treat them, and no one should go broke paying for other peoples’ insurance. If you agree, please post this as your status for the rest of the day.”
Wasn’t fully sold on it. I would like to post something but want it to be bullet proof.
